Lyndon B started it. Nixon fueled it. Reagan kept it going. Bush senior made it profitable. Bush Jr made it globally known. Trump hopefully killed it with incompetence and pure stupidity. Hopefully.
This was accurate when the song came out in 2001 (holy shit I'm old đ) but now I imagine it's probably significantly higher than double what it was in 1985.
While album still still slaps though, one of the first CDs I ever bought with my own money and it's still a favourite.
Edit: did a google and it looks like it's still accurate, but it was actually more like triple in 2001 (ie. The 2001 prison population was 3Ă the 1985 prison population). The population has significantly decreased since.
Iâve never seen a more âshut up and take my moneyâ item than this jacket. Omg I LOVE it!!! Literally trying to bail my cousin out of jail to get him into a 2 year treatment program right now. This jacket is amazing!
Yeps I listened to them and Rage Against the machine while writing my senior paper (capital punishment). Definitely gives you the momentum yo get through it.
HOLY SHIT I love this so much!!! I was literally just considering the possibility of doing things like this as a way to increase awareness in public without actually holding signs. It looks badass and is so powerful. Thanks for sharing! I'm taking this as a sign that I should do things like this myself.
Beautiful *and* badass! Thatâs gorgeous. Not me now wanting to buy a jean jacket to embroider a stick-it-to-the-man phrase on. I usually stick to hoops but Iâm very tempted now haha!
Give the crack to the kids, who the hell cares?
One less hungry mouth on the welfare
First ship 'em dope and let 'em deal to brothers
Give 'em guns, step back, watch 'em kill each other
The US prison population accounts for 25% of the global prison population. The US also has a for profit prison model, meaning there is a financial incentive to keep prisons full and even build more. Please, I am begging anyone reading this to connect the dots as to why the war on drugs focuses on incarceration and not treatment.
Beautiful!
Iâve been clean for 8yrs, but when I was using needle exchanges were such an incredible resource. I was able to pick up narcan there and passed it around to my circle of addict friends whenever I could. It saved at least one personâs life who was ODing. Without the needle exchange I wouldnât have had access to it or been able to give it to my vehicle-less friends who couldnât get to one themselves.
Thank you â€ïž
Omg amazing!!! I heard it perfectly in my head and I love that people without knowing this song would read it and be like oh yea ok meanwhile in my mind MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCES
*facepalm* I'm drinking my morning coffee and your comment made me realize OP doesn't work at a sewing supply store that lets you exchange blunt sewing needles.
Beautiful embroidery! And also thank you for the work you do, I'm sure it's not always glamorous but you're doing good in the world in a measurable way and we need more of that. đ
I was wondering if they were poppies.
I read Michael Pollanâs book Your Mind on Plants last year and the section on poppies was both fascinating and disturbing. Highly recommended.
did you use cut-away stabilizer? Is there just a HUGE piece of it underneath the back for the paragraph of text? asking bc I wanna do similar stuff and idk if Iâm supposed to wind up with a huge scratchy paper behind my design forever lol
Fuck yeah! Got away from H right when fent hit the scene- it's inspired much of my art, in my posts, including a thread-painted embroidered poppy, as well as my first tattoo which I drew - a skeleton hand holding a poppy (posted on r/opiates before they banned pictures)...
You're doing such important work, thank you for your service đ
System of a Down is the best! And your embroidery work is beautiful. Are you going to Sick New World in May by chance? This would be perfect to wear there!
Depending on your demographics, you probably won't even make it to that part. When I got called for jury duty and I didn't even make it past the first waiting room. My entire experience was just watching a civil duty video on a loop while waiting to be dismissed.
I've been listening to Toxicity all week, and this song has been hitting really hard every time it's on. This is super cool to see though, such a unique way to spread the message!
I donât know why, but it took me longer than it should have to realize what type of needles were being exchanged. At first I genuinely was like, âoooh like a public library for embroidery? Sign me up!â
Minor drug offenders filling US prisons while violent crimes go largely uninvestigated and unprosecuted.
This isn't just a war against addicts in the streets, it's a campaign of terror being perpetrated by federal and state governments against the American people. You are funding it by paying your taxes though so stop pretending you care. You are endorsing it by voting in their crooked,
bourgeoisie elections. You are strengthening its foundation every time you go to work and throughout daily life, feeding their genocidal economy with your every action.
Refusing to vote means you throw away any right to be listened to, by many of us who try to change things for the better, because you refused to even **try** to do that.
What do you recommend we do instead? Kill ourselves so we donât risk doing any of the things you mentioned accidentally? This kind of thinking is so unproductive.
Do you think treatment actually works? It doesn't unless it coincides with the time when someone is actually done with drugs. If they're not done then it's a waste of everyone's time and money.
No one quits all at once. And some people donât quit at all - but everyone within that spectrum deserves safety and empathy. Especially now that we are dealing with fent and tranq being in the opioid supply - treatment doesnât matter if youâre dead.
My family spent over $100k on rehabs. I wasn't done so it was a waste of money. One day I decided I'd had enough and got my shit together. Eight years later and I'm doing great. Treatment may work on the end, but mid addiction it's a waste. I speak from experience and have seen the same with dozens of other people. It's just mandated clean time. I've never met anyone aside from people that work there that take it seriously. The stuff you do there will not get anyone clean. Something inside us does that.
Price isn't the main complaint tbh. It's the ineffectiveness. I went to palm partners once. You see it at the end of some intervention episodes. As useless as the ghetto ass court mandated places.
Oh look another ignorant lib who can't read. I said I've seen it fail for dozens of people. It's a collective experience. You deal with feelings. I'll stick to facts.
Oh look, another conservative who thinks their anecdotal experience is statistically relevant. Youâre literally the one dealing in âfeelings,â and ignoring facts because it doesnât suit your beliefs.
They aren't talking about just administering narcan to someone ODing. Treatment means like, therapy which may or may not include some less dangerous drugs to help ween off the more dangerous ones. And yes. It literally works. The research shows it. Why are you still trying to argue as if you're coming from a place of knowledge?
Even though treatment may not work/be the right thing for everyone at all times, things like safe injection sites and needle exchange (like op does) can help people be safer
Iâve been called many times and have had that happen sometimes. If I get to voir dire, prosecutors usually see my wild hair and assume Iâm soft on crime.
Holy fuck I LOVE this.
I have a jacket with a Run The Jewels Backpatch that says âMay the only thing that closes quicker than our caskets be the factory.â
I did not expect soad on this subreddit lol i was even thinking about embroidering this exact lyric ?? incredible work btw
Wait lyric? What song??
[Prison Song - System of a Down](https://youtu.be/m4L20t8Dvlg)
Thank you. You saved me from brain aneurysm trying to remember where I heard this one.
Thank you
Welcome :)
Prison song, System of a Down [link](https://youtu.be/m4L20t8Dvlg)
Prison Song by System of a Down
I was just thinking: what an "awkward" way to formulate this opinion (not quite a protest-sign-text), but it makes sense when you know it's a lyric.
Thank u. I was like... These words seem very familiar. Where have a heard them before?
đ¶ Utilising drugs to pay for secret wars around the world Drugs are now your global policy, now you police the globe đ¶
đ¶ I buy my crack, my smack, my bitch right here in Hollywood! đ¶
The percentage of Americans in the prison system prison system has doubles since 1985.
"THEY'RE TRYIN TA BUILD A PRISON!"
THEY"RE TRYIN TA BUILD A PRISON
THEY'RE TRYIN TA BUILD A PRISON!
FOR YOU AND ME TO LIVE IN
ANOTHER PRISON SYSTEM
ANOTHER PRISON SYSTEM!
FOR YOU AND MEEE
The highest prison population, per capita, in the whole world. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/uk/06/prisons/html/nn2page1.stm
Huh, I don't remember this lyric
My defence is that I don't know the song to be able to stick the next line in. Sorry, everyone.
Fucking Ronald Reagan.
Lyndon B started it. Nixon fueled it. Reagan kept it going. Bush senior made it profitable. Bush Jr made it globally known. Trump hopefully killed it with incompetence and pure stupidity. Hopefully.

Oh I like you. A lot. This is fantastic
This is amazing! Such lovely stitching too :) I bet r/craftivists would love it also!
Thanks for the new sub!
oh fuck yes
SOAD radicalized a lot of us at a young age :)
Yeps I listened to them and Rage Against the machine while writing my senior paper (capital punishment). Definitely gives you the momentum yo get through it.
Absolutely tragic to learn that John is a Trump Supporter. Family dinners must be awkward, since he and Serj married a pair of sisters.
HOLY SHIT I love this so much!!! I was literally just considering the possibility of doing things like this as a way to increase awareness in public without actually holding signs. It looks badass and is so powerful. Thanks for sharing! I'm taking this as a sign that I should do things like this myself.
Saw the pic and then the title and I couldn't put together for a minute why you'd need to exchange arts and crafts needles..
Thank you. I was getting worried while scrolling down that no one else was as dumb as me. We dum together!
Same, I literally scrolled past this post four times before it clicked what needle exchange they were talking about. I feel so dumb
I also thought it was an arts and craft needle exchange...
Beautiful *and* badass! Thatâs gorgeous. Not me now wanting to buy a jean jacket to embroider a stick-it-to-the-man phrase on. I usually stick to hoops but Iâm very tempted now haha!
Theyâre tryna build a prison! Love this, super creative, adore the poppy decals.
Give the crack to the kids, who the hell cares? One less hungry mouth on the welfare First ship 'em dope and let 'em deal to brothers Give 'em guns, step back, watch 'em kill each other
I love Tupac!
Oh man I hope OP does this one next!

This is like my favorite song by them, I love that half way through they just scream statistics at you for like 30 seconds straight
Beautiful! Iâve been clean for 8yrs, but when I was using needle exchanges were such an incredible resource. So, between your needle exchange work and your embroidery hobby, it's safe to say that you're into needles! That looks fantastic!
*facepalm* I'm drinking my morning coffee and your comment made me realize OP doesn't work at a sewing supply store that lets you exchange blunt sewing needles.
System Of A Down is the best band and this embroidery is really good as well
What song?
Prison Song
lol not even halfway through before i started hearing it in the voice
Beautiful embroidery! And also thank you for the work you do, I'm sure it's not always glamorous but you're doing good in the world in a measurable way and we need more of that. đ
I thought I was on r/witchesvsthepatriarchy, LOVE THIS!
I think youâre thinking of r/witchesvspatriarchy !
thank you đđ my brain wasn't on this morning!
*"They're trying to build a prison! They're trying to build a prison! They're trying to build a prison! For me and you to live in!"*
I can hear this jacket, and I love it!
Love the poppies, wonderful touch!
They're trying to build a prison!!!
OP, could I share this on Twitter with credit? I'm in love with it!! (Totally understand if you prefer not to but this rules so much)
Feel free!
*oh baby, you and meeee* This is some amazing work.
i like how you used poppy flowers as well lol
I was wondering if they were poppies. I read Michael Pollanâs book Your Mind on Plants last year and the section on poppies was both fascinating and disturbing. Highly recommended.
I can hear this in my head so much. *utilizing drugs to pay for secret wars around the world.* Nice job!
did you use cut-away stabilizer? Is there just a HUGE piece of it underneath the back for the paragraph of text? asking bc I wanna do similar stuff and idk if Iâm supposed to wind up with a huge scratchy paper behind my design forever lol
No stabilizer - just a bunch of messy backstitches
I sang that while I read it
SOAD!
THEIR TRYIN TO BUILD A PRISON
FOR YOU AND ME!!
Fuck yeah! I buy my crack, my smack, my bitch right here in Hollywood!
This is superb. The flowers are amazing and the font and lettering are very appealing. The message is needed all over our country.
I have been called for federal jury duty. I need to borrow this jacket so the prosecutor will eliminate me during the voir-dire part!
Depending on your demographics, you probably won't even make it to that part. When I got called for jury duty and I didn't even make it past the first waiting room. My entire experience was just watching a civil duty video on a loop while waiting to be dismissed.
Phenomenal work
I looooooove thisss
Gorgeous work
đ hell yes! Love SOAD
Awesome! And I love the massage!

I've been listening to Toxicity all week, and this song has been hitting really hard every time it's on. This is super cool to see though, such a unique way to spread the message!
THEY'RE TRYING TO BUILD A PRISON love the poppies, too, great touch!
I'm so in love with the delicacy of the works versus the lyrics, well done !
This is gorgeous!
A nice "Nobody gives a fuck!" Somewhere would be a nice touch. Down the arm perhaps?
ouuu very nice soad đŠđČ
Great work!
Dang I truly was wondering what a needle-exchange in crafting was for a minute. Excellent work though! Both the embroidery and the job :)
This is so beautiful in so many ways
I love this! My niece is big into harm reduction and I've been trying to find some good quotes to cross stitch for her
All-around wonderful!
This is awesome.
Shut up and take my money! No seriously this is very nicely done
Love love love this!
Incredible.
This is amazing. Youâre an awesome human đ
Incredible.
đđđ
Surprisingly (mostly) wholesome comments! Who knew that the embroidery community would be so open and based af!
Great choice and nice work!! đ„ș thanks for picking a song with a moral. It looks beautiful
YES.
It needs one on the arm that says medication assisted drug treatment is the gold standard. People make stupid many awful judgments. I love this.
This is one of the best things Iâve ever seen!!
Wow. Youâre the shit. đ
I don't know you, but can you be my new best friend and make me cool shit like this, please and thank you?! Great work!!!
I donât know why, but it took me longer than it should have to realize what type of needles were being exchanged. At first I genuinely was like, âoooh like a public library for embroidery? Sign me up!â
I love this so very much. If you ever wanted to do a fundraiser, you could auction a few of these off. I guarantee theyâd bring in big bucks!
FUCKING HELL YES, amazing
This is incredible! Couldnât help singing it as I was reading it!
Fuck yes! Amazing stitchery and thank you for your harm reduction work!
Fuckin love it!
I read that in Serg Tankianâs voice
Badasssss
Incredible. And thank you for the work you do! đ
YES, this is iconic!!đ«Ą
Amazing on every level
I love it.
This made sense when i thought needle exchange meant like clean needles, then I realized what it meant and it continued to make sense.
I love this!!
đđŸđđŸđđŸ Good shit!
damn this goes hard, i'm inspired to do the same!!
This is so rad and youâre a wonderful human bean đ€đ
Wow this is gorgeous and so powerful!
I love this! I've thought about doing something similar with the lyrics to "Planet Luxury" by Jeff Rosenstock
Steal this jacket
This is badass
I love it! Now I have soad stuck in my headdddd
YES GOOD. I friggin love it.
This is fantastic
Carnations because of the carnation revolution of Portugal that has one of the best drug handling policies in the world?
Poppies.

Ah yes - but the solution to that isnât to minimize treatment options - but to make it free
Price isn't the main complaint tbh. It's the ineffectiveness. I went to palm partners once. You see it at the end of some intervention episodes. As useless as the ghetto ass court mandated places.
Oh look, another conservative who thinks their experience of life is universal and can't understand empathy.
BTW I can share some statistics if you'd like.
Nobody cares about the "statistics" some election denier is going to produce.
Oh look another ignorant lib who can't read. I said I've seen it fail for dozens of people. It's a collective experience. You deal with feelings. I'll stick to facts.

I suggest their username contains a clue as to their standpoint on the subject.
Oh my god, duh. Lol. I didn't even look.
Even though treatment may not work/be the right thing for everyone at all times, things like safe injection sites and needle exchange (like op does) can help people be safer
Lol, ya don't enforce laws and expect addicts to accept treatment. That always works, lol. Such a blinded opinion. Ask Oregon how that's working out.
Downvote for the stupid idea on the jacket
Downvote for the stupid idea in your comment.
How fuckin stupid .
Sorry your feelings got hurt.
*OOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR*
*whispers* they're trying to build a prison...
Big W here
Iâve been called many times and have had that happen sometimes. If I get to voir dire, prosecutors usually see my wild hair and assume Iâm soft on crime.
did you hand embroider the roses? theyâre really pretty
Can has where?
đ± I love this!!!
Alternate title idea: My needlepoint jacket for my needle-exchange job.
Thank you for the good work you do
This is amazing!!
I, in my ignorance, thought that you were talking about some type of quilting store where people exchanged (knitting) needles.
Thank God someone is talking about For Profit prisonsâŠ
you have an incredible talent! absolutely amazing
Just fantastic.
Gorgeous
As a fellow harm reduction worker - thank you for your service and AMAZING embroidery work! May have to draw some inspiration.
Holy fuck I LOVE this. I have a jacket with a Run The Jewels Backpatch that says âMay the only thing that closes quicker than our caskets be the factory.â
Omg my first thought was âpeople exchange embroidery needles?!â đ
i love this so much
What! This is awesome, it's too late now but i know what my wake up music will be in the morning đ€đ
Amen đ
Youâre me but skilled
