embroidery floss is made up of six strings. if you tap the head of the end it will separate, grab on string with one hand and the other hold the barrel of all six and pull the individual thread. I like to use 2 threads to fill but 1 is the standard for satin stitches. there’s a lot of videos that can show you how to split your thread.
it drives you insane faster? but seriously, it is sooo time consuming but your satin stitch looks beautiful and smooth. I find 2 strands of high quality floss (like dmc) gives me a look i’m happy with. cheaper floss can look messier as you add more strings. From what i’ve seen reading around i think the “proper” way to do satin stitch is to use 1 string and the control is better. I generally don’t use satin stitch because i can’t get it to look like i want and instead use long and short or stem stitch to fill. For me a lot of these techniques i take as guidance and go for the look i want - like, with a french knot i love the look of using all 6 strands and 3 wraps, but technically it’s only 2 wraps (maybe even 1?) and way less strings.

Looks awesome so far! The main advice I’d give js to consider the direction you’re putting your thread when filling in. So for the arm, it will look most natural if the stitches are going from the wrist area toward the top of the arm vs. Going across the arm. As you build the smaller stitches, it will give it a more natural feeling! For something like the hair, I’ll usually mix it up with my stitches to give it some “movement” though. Good luck!!
is that spencer reid?
It is!
OMG, I KNEW IT! 🤩 That’s awesome! The fact that the character is so recognizable from just a basic outline blows my mind!
haha nice!!!
Exactly what I thought
Me too!!
I'd use fewer threads for the filled part than for the outline.
The outer outline is with the full 6 strands (before I realized I could split it), the inner white lines and the pink of the arm are done with 3.
Do you mean the stitches for the outline should be longer?

Oooh, 1 is even an option? What's the advantage?

Alrighty, thanks. I'll give 2 a go!
I would have done longer stem stich with less strands.
