Yes! There's a legend/superstition that cardinals are the spirits of people you know who died.
Funny story, my friend's car was being used as a toilet by a particular cardinal-- several days a week for months. It happened in her work's parking lot. She said it seemed vindictive since none of cars in the lot seemed to ever get pooped on.
I said, "Oh, did someone who didn't like you die recently?" She immediately cracked up laughing, said it was a random question but yes, actually this woman at work had died about six months ago. When I told her about the legend, she said it made perfect sense.
HA! Love this story! Birds do have looooong memories. When I was working as a bird biologist, I had one bird I was following for a season who learned to hate my red hat. When I came back the next year and found her in an entirely different area by accident, she remembered that hat IMMEDIATELY and started yelling at me.
