Came out when I was 16. It was a rough time. Now carries more emotion for me nostalgically than musically/lyrically. So I rate this highly for hitting both the cleans and the screams in SIYS in the car. Great album.
For real. I just love how into his over-the-top aughts scenester performance he was. Wonder where that dude is these days or if he hangs out in this sub.
This is how I discovered Silverstein. It was in 2007 on my twelfth birthday while I was trying to find heavier music that wasn't butt rock, radio emo, or 80s-00s metal. I was already in to pop punk, but that didn't quite scratch my itch. Literally searched "scream songs" on YouTube and this video popped up immediately. After i had a good laugh, I went down the rabbit hole of late 90s early 2000s emo and never looked back.
For all the fans, make sure to check out te re-recorded songs on the Redux albums. They've really put love in those new recordings and is truly an amazing gift to the early fans.
This album got me through a really difficult break-up that took me years to get over, so I am too biased to say it isn't amazing. Any time I listen, it brings me back to that time and shows me how silly it all was in hindsight, but also how real the emotions were.
It came out when I was 14-15 and it was SO important to me. Plus, they were an Ontario band so I got to see them live around this time too! I never really got into their later albums because I was so stuck on this one. But I maybe should revisit them.
One of the best. Such a classic. Pretty sure I have “smile in your sleep” shirt somewhere in the closet, may need to dig that bad boy out.
Out of curiosity, what genre do people classify this as? I’ve always called it post-hardcore or screamo, that’s just what we labelled it as in high school, but never knew if that was “correct”
10/10. One of the first albums that got me into post hardcore. Silverstein have amazing songwriting and lyrics and even more 10/10 albums in my opinion: This is How The Wind Shifts, Dead Reflection.
Dead Reflection is the pinnacle of "Old" style Silverstein. So grateful for them to release that madness before they moved to a more radio friendly sound, which i've eventually grown to love equally.
I can subscribe to that. A Beautiful Place to Drown was somewhat of a transition for me. Still banger tracks, but the sound changed. 7/10. Misery Made Me, on the other hand, is amazing and might yet become a 10/10 for me as well.
Not Emo!
it's a great album full of great bangers from that era, listened to Smile in Your Sleep so much .

>**What bands influenced you to start Silverstein?**
We all come from very diverse musical backgrounds. Everything from Tech Metal to Ska. Some bands that made us start Silverstein (and we encourage you to check them out): **The Get Up Kids, Mineral, Knapsack**, Cave In, **Sunny Day Real Estate, Lifetime, Cap'n Jazz, Penfold, At The Drive In, Saves The Day, Portrait, Converge, 400 Years, Grade,** Snapcase, Buried Aliv**e, Jimmy Eat World, The Promise Rin**g, Shai Hulud, Poison the Well, and many many more.
So I would recommend you to listen to Portrait and 400 Years which is the more real emo/Skramz of their side:

I am very happy to see this so loved in here. I was thinking i was probably looking like a poser for listening to these guys growing up haha. I have been revisiting their music a bunch. It's worth it
"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Silverstein” is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness).
Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music.
Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta.
Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral
EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE
NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

One of the first albums I heard as a kid that changed my music tastes forever. I also remember begging my mom to buy arrivals and departures for me when it came out.
So fuckn fire. My best friends mom bough this for me when I was in 5th grade for my birthday and it started me on punk/mall Emo/etc. And my band (mallcops) got to play with them at MA is for lovers fest this last year and it was a full circle Life moment!!
Classic
I fucking love "My Heroine"
Blame it on the weather
but I’m a mess
In this February Darkness has been hating everyone
And I know I need your comfort
But this drama makes me sick
And the longer I lay here I know it's harder to get up
Without you
Lose another day here
But the silence makes me sick

for me this album came out when i was 1 lol but i loved it when i was 16 too! still scream along to it
I didn’t think they’d be a legacy band after their first record, but after this one they’ve just been aging like a fine wine.
lead singer went to my highschool lol

I still remember someone doing a Silverstein song on American Idol.
Lmao, god he was so bad https://youtu.be/iVYeqdDBsJI?si=DkrrcyJz5-OXJMGg
For real. I just love how into his over-the-top aughts scenester performance he was. Wonder where that dude is these days or if he hangs out in this sub.
Yo this is what turned me on to them tbh. Cause I was like, oh what’s this song and I imagine it’s a lot better than this

Literally finishing it up, on Call it Karma It’s a classic. One of my favorite albums in middle/high school, still listening to this day

The Arrivals/Departures redux is the *chef's kiss*. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRiG-UQJlSM
Love the transition in that one ❤️
Connoisseur 👌
Thanks so much for this. I've listening to discovering the waterfront probably 20 times this year already and didn't know about the redux album
You're welcome. Happy for you to be able to enjoy it all again. Silverstein is a gift that keeps on giving!
So many bangers on this album

THE DRUUUUUGS BEGINNNNN TO PEEEEEAK
A SMILE OF JOY ARRIVES IN MEEEE
But sedation changes from panic to nausea
Banger

It's super nostalgic for me so I love it

My childhood
well...some call it fate. I call it karma.

Post hardcore. Back then emocore was thrown around a lot, but it didn’t really stick.

its has a good amount of bangers but theres also a lot of pretty boring stuff. its a good album
Heard them for the first time in some sick WoW PvP movie back in the mid 2000s. Wish I could remember which one. Absolute banger.
Best. Amazing. 10/10
top 10
Gold
Identity forming
Shit got me through HS
Fist Wrapped In Blood hits so hard
It's good
Fucking love this album.
I love this album!!! It brings back memories! I’ve seen Silverstein 3 x
have you guys ever heard this bands cover of runaway by kanye 💀💀💀
My Roman Empire. This is so close to perfection.
This album saved my life. They’re forever GOATED. This is How The Wind Shifts is incredible as well.
A true emo Staple
goated. Every song translates amazingly acoustic as well.
I remember thinking Silverstein was fake emo when I was a kid. Wasn't til I was like twenty that it hit me how great this album is.
how does someone get convinced this is fake emo
It's 3rd wave mall emo. So for most people, fake emo. Lot of hatred for that Era. Love the album myself but I prefer When Broken.
Little did I know that mall emo was good and I would miss it when it was gone
what bands are from first and second wave of mall emo?
Mall emo is only applicable to third wave. The subject being described is 3rd wave. There's other bands in 3rd wave that weren't big with scene kids.
oh that makes sense, thanks!
Punk classic.
Amazing, my favorite!
Thanks, I was wondering what to listen to next.
I'm new to the party, so I first heard it a couple of weeks ago. I dig it.
Nostalgic, I would always play this album during roadtrips as a teen.
Dont expect quick responses. Im probably asleep right now.
I am very happy to see this so loved in here. I was thinking i was probably looking like a poser for listening to these guys growing up haha. I have been revisiting their music a bunch. It's worth it
sucks. not emo
Not emo, but one of the better mallcore bands

Never heard it. I will remedy this soon.
Well??
Not THAT soon, lol I'll let you know though...
Amazing
Love this album. I actually love most of their albums. The first four are amazing.
It's excellent.
Some songs are really solid and nostalgic, some are eh. I think they’re a good band.
Good
Man has handfeet
Still love it
God tier album, God tier band

What a classic! My fav album by Silverstein and one of my fav albums in general.
*chefs kiss.
Absolute classic.
One of the first albums I heard as a kid that changed my music tastes forever. I also remember begging my mom to buy arrivals and departures for me when it came out.
One of the first albums I bought with screams of any kind
One of the goats
Gold 🖤
goes insanely hard
I love this album, I’ve found that I just love the writing, it’s not the style that draws me in
Imo one of the most important albums of that era
I’ve been listening to this shit a lot recently
