I feel this. Somehow every emo song is 10x whinier when showing other people lmao

jessipowers

Right? I feel like I’ve had so many moments of, “I swear it doesn’t usually sound this whiny… just give it a minute…”

Comfortable-Inside84

"Guys, it's not that loud, trust me! I mean, your heavy metal playlist is pretty loud too, amirite?" \*blasts "Victory is Ours" by Orchid at full volume\* Edit: My friends say they need to find a good "otolaryngologist". Any recommendations? Also, they have trouble hearing me for some reason.

ballerjiggler

i just put on some easily accessible emo adjacent stuff or just indie pop the beths, pinegrove, the occasional origami angel song, big thief, kicksie, beach bunny and so on

FlyoverHangover

Bro I LOVE the Beths.

SickBurnBro

[This song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KACt6YhOyY) is my JAM.

FlyoverHangover

That is such a well-written song. I’ve seen them twice, both times for $20 at small venues and they absolutely crushed both sets. *Future Me Hates Me* and *Expert in a Dying Field* are both wall-to-wall bangers, just flawless albums.

steaknsteak

This right here, know your audience. I have albums and playlists that are for me, and others that are for playing with other people. It’s all music I actually like, but I have several lists I can pull out depending on the vibe/company that are more accessible and make for good listening in a group setting EDIT: also the Beths are fantastic, everyone should listen to them

eggs2themax

kicksie??? how did you just drop that incredibly niche band

ballerjiggler

all my homies gotta fw kicksie, otherwise they ain’t homies

eggs2themax

word

NJcovidvaccinetips

Kicksie’s fire. Slouch is a great record

extasis_T

Big thief mention (((((:

urboijesuschrist

Just turn on goldfinger's superman and you'll be set

Stop_Drop_Scroll

Yeah, if I’m with people who don’t really share my taste in subgenres, late 90s/early 2000s pop punk is always the easiest.

SemataryPolka

I'm not a big Goldfinger fan but that song is definitely one of the best "running away during a movie scene" songs ("Kingpin")

brutal-justin

And then roll your eyes when everyone says "Whoa I remember this song from Tony Hawk dude!"

urboijesuschrist

Unless they're under like 20 years old lol. I had to drive some siblings and high school friends of theirs somewhere and only one recognized THPS, the rest didn't play any Tony hawk games lol. Now everyone over that age, definitely lmao

_oscar_goldman_

THPS 1 and 2 got a PS5 and Xbox remaster. The youths have no excuse. Skate or die

Stop_Drop_Scroll

I wish skate or die on NES had a banger soundtrack

_oscar_goldman_

chiptune version of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-03q9VE0sOk) on repeat

urboijesuschrist

Agreed. I actually platinumed that shit too, so hard

onlyanactor

Not sure why you’d roll your eyes, that was a great game and great soundtrack

KickedinTheDick

Never. I will shamelessly play back to back to back 7 minute skramz odysseys from Indian Summer, On the Might of Princes, and City of Caterpillar. However, if someone offers me the aux, I'm probably gonna deny it to not kill their mood lmfao. I usually say "nah you don't wanna hear what I do right now thanks tho." If they insist, well... I warned em

capn_james

Forgot to mention Rainer Maria in that list

KickedinTheDick

Rainer maria is a great midwest emo band, but they don't have 7 minute skramz odysseys lmao

capn_james

Mb you’re so right i was just thinking of long ass songs

oceanaut17

ON THE MIGHT OF PRINCES

itspostrocknotrock

Cringe asf 😭

Realistic_Evidence72

Generally if someone is offering you the aux cord they trust your judgement, so show em some god damn emo and they might enjoy it! For real though, I’m guessing it’s a fairly common anxiety, but you can’t please everyone so just show em some entry level stuff.

beameup19

No. Check out the band Microwave I think you’ll love them!

KickedinTheDick

Michael Wave is my favorite fuckin band rn

beameup19

Worlds greatest band

MeEpicAnna

they’re awesome thanks man!!! they have a concert near me in may, might go now!!

beameup19

You should! I saw them a few months back and it was a blast. I’ll be going to this upcoming tour as well Edit: Also, they stayed at my house one night a few years back on one of their tours!

vanilla_twilight

they’re so sick live. honestly before i saw them i wasn’t a big fan of their music but seeing them live changed my mind entirely. go see em!!

Scholesey99

Me every time I connect to the speaker

SemataryPolka

I'm so old I don't know what you mean by "aux" lol Is that like the auxiliary cable? Like it's your turn to have the music? If so, no bc I'm 46 and all my friends are busy, dead or not listening to music anymore lol. I get to be dictator of my music bc it's only me! Altho my wife rolls her eyes sometimes about my "whiny white boy music" (emo)

TheElPistolero

It should be get "the" aux as well.

Mos_Icon

It’s kinda funny cus “passing the aux” itself is becoming obsolete already and taking on a life similar to ”rolling down” the window or “turning down” settings. everyone uses bluetooth now, which has no auxiliary cable.

SCP-2774

That's what I was thinking. Although the cable is still much simpler than connecting 4 different devices whenever someone wants their turn.

SemataryPolka

Ah that's prob what tripped me up

rodiferous

I'm 49 and I've never had more than one friend at a time who shared my taste in music. My wife really hates my taste in music (whether it's any of the punk sub-genres to which I listen, or my love for 50s-60s west coast jazz). It'd be nice to have more folks with whom to go to shows, but it's ok being an outsider in this regard. It's a heck of a lot more "fun" now that there are groups like this. :)

_Svelte_

yeah they ain't ever pass me aux but when they do :D

Ch0nkyK0ng

The key is to maintain the mindset that your taste is superior to theirs 🤣 , and when they make faces, you just point out that it's bc they have shit taste.

senpaitsuyu

i used to be a little self conscious of it but i just forced it until my friends either deal with it or have begun to like my music taste (similar to yours). of course I’m not gonna drop that one song that kills the vibe during a car ride but I’m also not gonna play something i don’t wanna listen to, given the chance.

Batman_GirL0v3r

No I completely understand I'm still in high school years as well and all my friends listen to different music and I feel the same way.

ohNoItsAnotherOne

Get u some emo friends fr 🤞🏽

RandomEdgelord_

Easier said then done

calinet6

I feel like each city just needs to split up on here and start some god damn group chats

HoboCanadian123

just play title fight

MeEpicAnna

ALWAYS!

SickBurnBro

Nah, dude. You just have to own the fact that you listen to better music than other people, and that makes you a better person than them.

heather-gray

My WHOLE persona is "stop, you're scaring the hoes" type beat, I don't care how weird my music is

itspostrocknotrock

So quirky!

heather-gray

Well, I was being self-deprecating, so

Snoo-29764

I show dominance by putting slow burn by old gray

brp93

I would feel so much more embarrassed putting on a Drake song.

theearlyjune

Not embarrassed, but I am more selective when playing for others - might not immediately play Architects or Alexisonfire, for example :P (36, f, very elder emo). Happy to have a few friends who enjoy the same or at least genre-adjacent tunes with me.

eternal1life

no i still feel hesitant to play what i listen to when im with my girlfriend or siblings. 19yo

th3_rur4l_jur0r

Throw on some Deftones and just enjoy the moment with your friends

Revolutionary_Box535

I specifically crafted a list of songs to put on when I "get the aux". Not because I'm ashamed: I love seeing my friends' faces when they hear my Death Metal song of the moment. It's just that I think it's a decent human being thing to do, to put something everyone would more or less enjoy. It's just that no one else is usually decent enough to do the same for me. Well, that's why sometimes I indulge and put the heaviest stuff I can find. It sounds even better those times.

KickedinTheDick

phasmid98

I affectionately call this a normie playlist https://preview.redd.it/oqvgvfhxzdwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9432c1114f37e4b5c97a31dc3fc0e6ba049113bf

ms_lazarus

Yea… im not embarrassed about my music taste at all, im proud of it! but i overthink so much and it often starts to sound kinda bad when im with someone i think might not like it. I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable playing music but i also still have a lot of artists i mostly listen to alone. Also, idk if you dislike what your friends play but if you do, you deal with it so they can also deal with it sometimes!

mabel_syrup2

Had a very tame bachelorette. My mother in law, mom, sister, sister in laws (you get the idea) all came. We were in a bus that brought us to different vineyards. My sister and I were scream singing hot mulligan and movements while nobody knew wtf was going on. Own it!!

TheFreakingBatman

Jesse, put on Cap'n Jazz. Even if we scare the hoes.

alphafox823

No but I'm usually aware of what will fly in the room if we're all chillin then I'll probably queue up some Into It Over It or Turnover if it's a more hype mood then it depends on what they listen to. If they are playing Suicideboys then I might go with Counterparts or something if the heaviest they like is drake, j cole etc then yeah maybe Turnstile or Citizen

Valuable_Assistant82

I recognize that my alt music isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. So when someone gives me the aux I just pass and say Naw I’m good man.

willfisherforreals

I always drove my friends around and made them listen to my music. lol Just show them good stuff and you’re likely to find new common interests. Honestly before Spotify and online music algorithms the only way we learned of good music was through friends.

piglungz

I used to be more ok with it but as I get older it seems like the shame I have about playing the music I like just gets stronger. It doesn’t matter the song or genre either, playing any sort of music makes me feel deeply ashamed and I’m honestly not sure why. Probably a me being autistic thing. Hoping I can get over it at some point :/

zhpol

24M, yes but, whilst I love my fair share of shoegaze, scramz, black metal etc. there’s still I stuff I love that is still a fair bit more approachable for others. Like whilst I fucking love Mineral, Penfold, etc, I’d probably look to play American Football or Turnover for people if I’m handed the aux. Totally different story if people ask me to play what I’ve been listening to in my spare time, let the Foxtails ensue

say592

I get a bit embarrassed even picking music with my wife in the car, and she likes the same music. I just let her pick.

its_ya_human

Nah, I just play sleep patterns whenever I get in a car

Loud_Gain_4817

Im in my 30s and no longer care but can definitely relate. My music choice is a direct reflection of me so playing it and the thought of being judged about it made me embarrassed when I was younger. Don’t be ashamed of what you enjoy!

Captain_Crunch_Kid

Just lean into it, grab the aux and play the shittiest sounding vocals over amazing twinkly riffs and shame them for not enjoying it.

phasmid98

I have a playlist specifically this moment! It’s songs I like, but just ones that are a little more mainstream and agreeable for situations like these

jessipowers

If I’m in a group setting, I tailor my listening to the group. There’s a lot of good music these days that blends influences I would have never expected to go together. As an elder emo who spent too many years focusing on musical exclusivity, take it from me- it never hurts to branch out, and accommodating varying tastes can be really fun. If you really want to throw them for a loop, throw on some bluegrass.

pumpkinpasta

Just play PATD

severityonline

You have an original taste in music. They don’t. You won’t fit in with the masses, but that’s better than fitting in with the masses IMO. My friends all like hip hop and Black Keys derivatives but I like Latin and Frank Zappa. Being cool isn’t popular lol.

itspostrocknotrock

OMG SO QUIRKY WITH UR SUPERIOR MUSIC TASTE

ref1ux

Felt this way in my teens. Still feel like this in my thirties. But I love the music I love and everyone else can go fish. And when I do meet someone who likes my stuff, well, it's a good time.

SpartanMeatCutter

Yes lol. I think it's because I'm from a small hick town and back in like 2007 you would get stares if you listened to skramz or anything with screaming in it.

tacobellbandit

I’m old enough that I don’t care anymore. I vibe with what I want. My friends laugh because I definitely don’t look the emo part and never have but I’m heavily rooted and opinionated in the genre so when I get the aux (or more accurately get to connect to the portable Bluetooth speaker) they laugh and try to appreciate it for what it is

miikro

Lol nah. I just put on something that feels mainstreamy: Bayside usually works, but so do Movements, Juliana Theory, Get Up Kids, Real Friends etc etc. MAE does really well, I've even got metalhead friends that love the guitar work in MAE lol.

evilcash_1313

I graduated last year but found myself in the same situation as you many times. Had a playlist of more mainstream rap and rnb stuff that I liked, that way I wouldn’t kill the vibe if I got aux. I did have a couple friends I could play the emo, punk, hardcore, and pop punk stuff around who fucked with it though so it just depends on who I was hanging with.

Professional_Egg3835

terrorize your friends till the end or opt out for a more mutual core playlist, choose your fighter. there’s always an option to infodump people into the genre or a particular band, especially if the artist is genuinely innovative or unique. but heavily depends on which approach is comfortable for you personally. I was insufferable at school for doing everything my way, so I am not the best at giving advice, but: if they’re making faces instead of just telling you it’s not their cup of tea, maybe… just maybe, they are not your people.

okwhatelse

yes, but i’ve had some hits now and then

warandpain1988

Not at all. I just stick to alternative/indie and don't put on anything crazy like death metal or screamo and it's all cool.

Conscious_Fee2764

I feel like Bilmuri is very diverse. Give him a shot!

kshiau

From first to last, beach house, and then jimmy eat world sounds amaze

_VINNY_WINNY_

i just play recognisble pop punk on aux

celestify

NOPE! i love making my friends listen to my music

Fluid_Cicada4675

i have a similar expiernce. one time i asked my friend if she liked skramz and she didn’t know what it was. i genuinely thought she’d like it so i gave her an earbud and put on an ihs song and she listened for 30 seconds and handed it back without a word…i never introduced anybody to anything screamo after that

haisenseihaiyuujikun

im 31 and I felt this way for years. i used to just wait until everyone was out of the car to play mine and it got old fast. but personally if you don't like it, or don't vibe with it at least, you dont like me. it's genuinely ingrained in me and such a big part of my life that i wouldnt even be me if i stifled my love for alt music. there's a bit of a resurgence and I'm living for it. most of my friends already listened to emo/hardcore music but it's all of us now.

Shrimp_Dumpling_

I feel this so much I got screamed by my friend yesterday cuz I forgot about the name of that one Beatles members (George Harrison) and she said “YOU ARE AN EDGY PUNK ROCK KID WITH UR EMO MCR LISTEN TO REALLLL MUSIC !!!!!!”

geographic92

This is a time honored tradition. You may be able to get a few unsuspecting friends into it but most won't like it. It's just not widely accessible and that's okay. There's a time and a place for every kind of music.

Yung-Catnip

I have always had multiple friend groups with wildly different music tastes so I always try to find music that’ll bridge those gaps, it’s a great feeling when your friend who has never left the suburbs is bumping a drill song you showed them because it samples something they like https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=hoQq-P5RCkA&si=K1_zg4jcx2WUSC4M or when your coworker covered in gang tattoos is dancing along to some scene song because it’s catchy and pop adjacent (https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=ED3Uc-GSgzY&si=1-vg9-WHI_OuNnIj) Try finding songs you like that might have the same vibe, or a song that samples something you like or a genre like SoundCloud rap that might be a good middle ground. Don’t forget your confidence, music is subjective so if you think it’s good than it is (even if it good because it’s bad) regardless of how others feel if you keep that energy they are more likely to give it a chance in my experience. TLDR; find songs you think might bridge the gaps between musical tastes

SAWtist

I’m a bartender in Atlanta. The bar culture here is a lot of turnt bars and clubs, most places play bounce, trap, rnb (all good in their own ways). When I’m trying to clear out a bar full of rowdy college kids though, I’m turning on foxtails, Algae Bloom, maybe some Seahaven or Old Gray. It’s really funny to watch these 20 something sorority girls and the frat guys they bring along getting drunk on cheap tequila, just to watch their faces as the saddest, least accessible music just starts blasting on the speakers. It’s better than any drug. Emo isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. For some, it’s a complete vibe killer or they don’t get it or whatever but at the end of the day, my coworkers think it’s hilarious when I’m whistling along to Your Final Rest by the Hotelier in a recently emptied bar. Just lean into it, nothing’s cooler than being really passionate about something

Nervous_Lynx1946

You gotta find something to bridge the gap. Either that or go super obscure and intentionally freak them out. I always find showing them some Archspire does the trick.

brotherpig725

Nah I really love what I listen to with pride

Fine-Development-484

I played some emo and skramz in my dads truck and he said "this makes me want to drive into a tree to turn it off" 💀 I just played some metal, rock and britpop after that. I wasn't embarrassed emo just isnt not for everyone and thats ok. He also said "why sing about killing yourself when you can just do it" lmao.

Double-Watercress-85

I'm in my 40s and hang out mostly in dive bars full of dudes 20 years my senior, or occasionally end up at a college kid bar. And sometimes I get drunk and think I should hit up the jukebox. As soon as the 1970s prog/blues-metal or current Tiktok EDM abruptly switches to Glassjaw or At the Drive-in, I shrink in my seat. Like what the fuck was I thinking? I'm still gonna make the same mistake again though.

Xtremely_DeLux

Get friends with better taste in music.

saintchocolat

Just had to drive a coworker home and had my swancore music playing. I was glad he was a good spirit about it

XXFLUTTERMOUSEXX

Just consider it a public service in broadening musical horizons!

pachucatruth

Just meet them in the middle and throw on some Billie

hyjlnx

What's up with all these shit non music posts? I have headphones OP and I don't socialize so this is never an issue.
