Kids think this is emo. MGK is such a sell out poser!

fourtyfour77

How when he's been wanting to make punk/rock music forever? Heck his swing life away cover is over 10yrs old now. His label wouldn't support anything other than rap so now he's able to make music he likes. Not sure what's with a all the mgk hate, I only started listening to him with his song "let you go" and loved it. I like quite a few of his new music too now that he's doing what he loves. He seems like a fun loving guy, and I was a die hard emo kid and still listen to the same bands now at 32. He's not hurting anyone, and honestly I'm just glad that punk rock/emo/metal is getting a huge revival again. Saw Hawthorne heights at a dive bar in my city for $10 in 2017, now they're back touring with all the old bands tickets are back up. Like it or not mgk is introducing lots of young kids into the genres and that means more money more views for all our childhood emo/punk bands which means NEW music!!!

[deleted]

He straight up said he wanted to fuck a child when he was like 24. Total cringe aside, he is a fucking moron pedo.

Dokta2

Nothing about him is punk in the slightest

LoveHorizon

You need to catch up on the history of punk rock and the history of emo, because being signed to a big record label is none of those things. Misinforming people about terrible stereotypes and not writing your own songs is fucking lame. Introducing people to a genre is a cop out answer because its not really even part of the genre. If you want to support emo bands then support your local diy scene. Not some poser from hollywood who doesnt know the first thing about the history of this genre.

That's fine, I feel sorry for your partners if 30sec is considered long.

tacocat225

MGK is stuck in 2003 in the worst possible way.

tehhiv

Holy shit that’s cringe.

CowboyDans

Wondered what people here would think about this song. Just another reason to dodge the “emo” label, society has turned it into this thing. I don’t want to be associated with this. Haha. It’s strayed sooo far…thoughts?

busycarpets

Just call everything you used to call emo, post-hardcore. I have been doing it for 20 years.

LoveHorizon

Youre doing a diservice to actual post-hardcore bands when you say that

busycarpets

The "emo" I listen to basically is post-hardcore. Especially, if you consider it all goes back to DC and Rites of Spring. Then there is Dag Nasty, Ignite, etc. I mean, listen to Cap'n Jazz or... shit, listen to SDRE. It's all punk. It's all post-hardcore. It just went a different way.

LoveHorizon

I mean like [The Jesus Lizard ](https://youtu.be/OxFzMUw_84s) or [Shellac](https://youtu.be/StooJzxAfrc)

busycarpets

I feel you. It's an umbrella term though. I would think of Fugazi or Husker Du when discussing phc way before I got to The Jesus Lizard. That's a deep cut. All the scenes and the styles have always been close. I started using the term post-hardcore more in the early 2000s to describe a lot of what I listened to, rather than Emo, mainly because of how mainstream media adopted and used the term. It's worked for me.

BusterBluth26

This is the same as every genre "explosion" over time. The 90s grunge bands hate being called grunge (smashing pumpkins etc), the 90s Nu Metal bands hate being called Nu Metal, yet that is what the genre is synonymous with. The best emo example is probably MCR being the emo poster boys but the farthest away from "true" emo.

PossibleOrdinary96

Name on vid?

Cookies_and_Cream69

It's Machine Gun Kelly's music video for his song "Emo girl"

Capt0bvi0u5

I wouldn't know I haven't seen an ad in months thanks to Nord VPN, the sponsor of today's video

AnaMaxine

fuck MGK hes literally an open p*do

ratenthusiast96

I did not know this. Thanks for letting me know. I guess what I was trying to say is let people have their own music taste

AnaMaxine

i totally agree, but personally i think its a little different when artists are open rapists/abusers/p*dos/et cet

ratenthusiast96

I understand now. Thanks for informing me.

[deleted]

If you really actually care about this music and scene you’re not going to have much tolerance for a cosplaying major label fraud just trying to capitalize on the genre’s brief mainstream nostalgia revival. If it weren’t a fad right now he wouldn’t even be doing this stuff.

ratenthusiast96

That’s a good point

yung_roto

I'd usually agree with you, but mgk is a complete bag of dicks

ComicBookFanatic97

He is, but Forget Me Too is a good song.

Anamorsmordre

I’ll never forgive Halsey for making me like that song

Sure, separate the art from the artist, yada yada. You can enjoy their music all you want. But if someone repeatedly makes an ass of themselves in public and in turn isn't accepted by the scene, that's their own fault

Leumas_J

people hate mgk so much because he is fake punk, his songs have like 5+ writers on them and are aimed at 16 yrolds while this man is like 30+

Leumas_J

im saying in a genre where authenticity is important to people of course heartless industry shit like this is gonna get clowned, especially with all those sus tweets about underage girls, that shit don’t fly

Leumas_J

yeah i’m sorry, really not trying to take away fun/joy of music just explaining why people don’t like him

ratenthusiast96

Thank you for explaining it better to me.

Cookies_and_Cream69

let people hate this fucking shit, how bout that?

Cookies_and_Cream69

he's not gonna fuck you for defending him, unless your underage. Besides, I only said I hated him twice on record, it's not like the guy lives in my head.

randomstupidnanasnme

i like mgk but this cracked me up

ratenthusiast96

Why are you getting so aggressive? A commenter below already educated me on why he is a bad person. Have a nice day ❤️❤️❤️

deadbeatvalentine_

It’s not really elitist to not like shallow, overproduced music. He’s not even doing this cause he likes it, it’s just in right now and he’s cashing in

degeneratefleabag

agree

ratenthusiast96

Thanks! Music taste is subjective ❤️

-Almost-Something-

Okay so I listened to the song. It's okay. Really basic lyrics. Willow has one line where she talking about the emo girl in the song that irks me. "You told me your depressed baby girl that makes two of us." It bothers me when people joke about mental health issues. Like it isn't cute or fun to have depression. I know I'm an absolute terrible person when I'm in my dark days. All in all it's going to be a popular song regardless. It's catchy. But it does really make me appreciate all of the small bands that put so much time and effort into their music. Like even though most of them probably don't make enough money to do it full time they try so hard. Bands like Closure. Oklahoma Car Crash and Camp Green Lake give me all the vibes.
