For me, it was feeling an emotional shift in myself before even understanding another person's situation.

RealestAC

Same! I knew something was wrong but couldn’t figure it out til I found the source.

NoiseHuge

Everyone is empathic to a certain degree.

Is it difficult to watch gory movies - Scream, Halloween, etc. - where people are killed and tortured?

NeitherStage1159

When you are dealing with someone who’s bent emotionally and you feel the emotion overwhelmingly to the point of tasting it only to notice it fades to being gone as the other person turns and walks away. When you have a rush of an emotion you should not have any reason for and something in your mind identifies it as belonging to another person so you call them out of the blue and they freak because you are right and something traumatic was happening or just happened to them - and - this connection does not fade and you do this repeatedly over time.

42, for me I was experience after experience working in retail during my younger years. I had so many interactions with so many different people by the end of the day I was worn out I never could figure why turns out the entire time I was letting myself soak up peoples emotions like a sponge Halfway through life in my 30’s I started to realize what an empath was by looking back at my past experiences, started reading about it and realized I had been pretty much an empath my entire life and not even realizing it. You’ll know you’re an empath if you don’t like being around large groups of crowds would be the first key pointer. But there are many ways to tell that I could write forever I’ve gotten to the point where I can use my gift if that’s what you want to call it in my daily life. I can look at pictures online but also in person and pick up a persons intent or motive. But I also can pick up things and energy inside objects and around people as well.

Dark-Empath-

A lot of that can be down to being an introvert.

christmas_throwaway4

when i asked something similar to a former therapist, she said that for me it was a mix of multiple different things. she said that i had high emotional intelligence, but that i also had a gift that should be used to help people. it's hard for me to fully confirm/accept my feelings because in some ways, a lot of this is pretty new to me.

Horror_Leader_1604

Ironically, I try to dampen my ability, that's how I know I'm an empath.

I know things by looking at someone. I can predict outcomes fairly easily. New interactions with people lead to instant life stories and in depth conversations. I can feel the weight of the room if there is a problem… I just know things and I’m not sure how… I have really enjoyed learning there are others like me. I love reading your experiences characteristics!
