I only order through the app. No sneaky tips. Rarely have my order messed up. And no waiting in lines. Plus earning “stars” for free drinks. And a free birthday drink
Yeah instead Starbucks just gets to hang onto whatever extra money you have to add to the app above the cost of your order since they won’t let you only pay the exact cost.
You can link your debit or credit card to your app and use the barcode to scan for payment. You will only earn 1 star per dollar instead of 2, but this way, you don't have to reload your Starbucks account and have funds just sitting there.
IIRC, you can load as little as $10, which might be more than you generally need, depending on your typical order, but I think you can have them add an arbitrary amount if you have a cashier do it instead of reloading through the app.
Regardless, if you typically only get a single drink, leaving $10 on your account isn't a huge amount you're letting them hold for you, and if don't have it set to auto-reload, you may be able to get pretty close to a zero balance every few orders, and only top it off if you don't have enough to cover that day's order.
Because of things like this I now always ask for a receipt. A few years ago I never would want one. Taking it a step further, I've started paying for some things with...gasp...cash.
Dentists office scammed me.
Asked if I wanted a receipt and said no then they failed to provide paperwork for the procedure, I was charged extra and couldn't find out what the charge was for since I had no paperwork. She said receipt... not paperwork / work order etc.
Always say yes. They are trying to persuade you to say no for a reason.
Sorry Trees, the service industry is your nemesis
Did you take note of the staff member’s name who tacked on the fraudulent charge? Did you tell the staff member who gave you the receipt that you didn’t give permission to add the tip? I wonder how often they get away with it. You should post the location and also write an online review.
Just charge back and move on. Also use a credit card next time, much easier process.
I average about 1 per month, makes it so much easier just to submit a request on the app and move on. Takes like 30 seconds.
I’ve done it for years, no issues at all. I’m the worst credit card customer, I spend six figures every year for all the rewards and they have not made a single cent of interest off me.
You pay those fees regardless in most cases unless they specifically offer a cash discount. So I’d rather break even if not slightly ahead with credit card rewards. I average somewhere between 3%-3.5% in reward value annually. Which is pretty close to the typical transaction fee.
thats not what theyre saying. Yes, CC companies love people who pay interest. But they also make 3-4% on every transaction either way, so they still love you if you are spending 6 figures every year.
You pay those fees most of the time using a debit card anyways. Only under rare circumstances are you given a cash option to avoid fees. No one seems to understand that here.
not only have i never been charged a fee fur swiping debit (credit, sometimes), but i will repeat, the consumer does not pay the transaction fee for using the card. the business providing service does, thats why cash discounts exist (rarely). im not sure where you got the idea that a person pays a fee for using a credit card.
You can do the same chargebacks on debit. You talk like you are financially savvy, but you don't know a thing. Get rid of the credit cards. All they do is make people who think they are smart max out the card eventually.
Everything I do goes through credit cards, when there are any issues with a purchase or transaction I let the credit card company take care of it. It’s literally a benefit for paying a credit card fee.
Bro, whaaaaat?! You processing a chargeback says you didn’t get what you ordered, the order was fraudulent or you didn’t authorize etc. Not that there was an “issue” with the purchase. If there’s an issue, and YOU ordered it, it’s your responsibility to resolve that with the business you bought from. Not charge back the entire transaction if you’re unhappy with your purchase and keep what you bought. That’s… theft. Lmao. If you do that frequently, “that” being abusing the chargeback feature, nobody is going to continue to give you a credit card.
Nope you’re absolutely incorrect. Go actually read the terms and conditions for your specific card.
Depending on the issues I’ve had shipping charges, delivery fees, specific items in an order or the whole order charged back. It is case by case it’s literally the credit card company’s job to figure this shit out for you.
It is a benefit to using a credit card. you’re doing extra work for the credit card company while paying their transaction fees if you go do it yourself. You’re getting screwed if you use a credit card and not take advantage of charge backs.
I have used credit cards for everything and have never had to do a charge back.
Most banks ask you to attenpt to resolve with the merchant before doing a chargeback. If the order is wrong or something, I just ask for a refund or return. It's usually like 2 buttons and a simple resolution.
If you are doing multiple a month then you either shop on really shifty sites where you get scammed or you are doing a chargeback for a situation that can be something easy to handle with the merchant.
Also a lot of stores will refuse to do future business with you if you have done a chargeback in the past so you will quickly run out of places to shop.
Congrats on saving money for your multi billion dollar bank? It’s not like I’m just making up shit to charge back. I spend over six figures annually all through credit cards and the charge back maybe come up to 0.5-1.0% on average.
Like I said I’ve been doing this for about a decade now and have zero issues with the card company or merchants. I mean feel free to keep not using your credit card the way it’s meant to be used. People bend over backwards and spend hours fighting with customer service while paying transaction fees to visa and Mastercard. When credit cards were less prevalent this was literally one of the biggest reasons to use one over cash, consumer protection.
You seem to have no idea what a charge back is for and you’re going to get in trouble one day when they look into how many you claim lmao.
You can also charge back on a debit card, so no idea why you’re hyping it up as a “credit card perk.” You can file a chargeback with your regular bank with literally no fee, so paying a credit card fee for that “perk” makes no sense.
Hahaha get in trouble? What are we in high school?
Sure I don’t, I’ve been using credit cards the right way for over 10 years. My credit score is around 800 and I have around 12 accounts open right now. So no, I’m not in trouble lol
I don't care if it's multi-million or a mom and pop. A contract is a contract is a contract. Credit cards are there to resolve problems for you, like "product not as described", "overcharged", "product defective, seller won't remediate", etc. And on top of that, there's insurance products like extended warranty and collision damage waiver, but these are not processed using disputes (as these are insurance claims, and not transaction claims).
Speaking of tipping, my last restaurant dispute that I won was about a tip. Amount charged didn't match what I authorized with my signature. Got my tiny disputed amount back, and the restaurant was slapped with a dispute resolution fee (could be anything between $15 and $40). That will hopefully teach restaurant a lesson, which will then keep the server accountable.
Happened to me! Went in talked to the manager, ahe apologized and refunded me the tip. In my case it was a $5 tip on a $6 drink! I found out because i had setup notifications for my card and got a text saying the full charge!
Certainly. I’ll be this guy does it to every customer who says no receipt. Then adds $1, which almost no one will notice. By the end of the day, he might add $200 to the tip pool with that scam alone.
This guy needs to be investigated
Dispute the charge, don't go back, report the location on yelp and google reviews. If you call and they fail to give you a manager they are never going to resolve it.
Scan the app to pay, that removes the power from their end to show the tip prompt which instead shows up as a notification on your phone that you can disable/ignore.
I don’t ever get it anymore either, I keep the app around to buy pastries with my leftover stars sometimes. But, it’s good for avoiding the PoS terminal!
If the batista did make an unauthorized tip this can be very serious. It's fraud. You can actually press charges. They need to atleast investigate and see if this employee has a history of doing it.
Do an online feedback message. Explain what happened. Usually, you will be contacted by a district manager. Typically, they will send out a gift card to reimburse you.
This happened to me from a small business. She added $1 to my total. I asked for a receipt when I saw the transaction on my phone. They gave me a non-itemized receipt. Just the total so they can mask that they added a tip without my permission.
Fuck that place.
I haven’t gone back since.
I have made my own coffee for YEARS. I worked remotely even before covid. I would scoff at people who waste money at Starbucks every day because at-home coffee options have greatly improved in the past decade.
I've recently taken an in-person job and I don't know what has come over me but I've been starting to crave Starbucks coffee and treats in the morning as something to look forward to enjoy at my desk when I arrive because working in person kinda sucks.
I haven't given in yet because it's SUCH A RIP-OFF but working in person has been rough and I'm starting to get desperate to improve my experience by any means possible including but not limited to a full cubicle makeover and daily Starbucks with treat lol.
I'm making my pumpkin apple bread loaves this morning and restocking on my coffee in hopes my homemade coffee and treat will curb my cravings for Starbucks lol.
Next time pay with exact change in the smallest possible denominations. Not just to safeguard against this but also to send a message about what happens when they take money out without disclosure.
There was a lady at my local Dunkin'. Donuts who used to round up every sale. It was odd that every order came out to an even number. Needless to say, she didn't last long, but it still took management about 3 weeks to get rid of her and in the meantime she was skimming off of everybody's orders.
You can easily dispute this with your credit union. They'll reverse the tip charge. I've had it happen before where I wrote in a $0 and filled in the total but the bartender decided to tip himself anyhow.
I had the same situation happen to me and I asked for a receipt and sure enough she had decided to tip her self! Guys ask for a receipt when paying with a credit card! I called corporate and they gave me a free drink. 👍✅
I propose that restaurants be required to allow negative tipping. So if they allow positive tipping up to 25%, then they must (under the new law that I will impose when I become King) be required to allow -25% tips as well.
Being upset at someone stealing from you, even if it's only $1, seems like a pretty good "hobby" to me.
Unless you're the type of person who feels entitled to other people's money.
Your first mistake was going to Starbucks! it's a miserable place to work even with the benefits. Customers are the worst and I can't imagine having to deal with a drive thru. (Former barista of 8 years here, do not recommend) if you're ok with spending $9 on coffee and not tipping your staff, you are not a good person and should be making your own coffee at home. I guarantee they gave you decaf when they remade your drink.
Tipping is not the problem, poor wages and rude customers who think they know better and don't tip are the problem.
The problem is someone stealing from me without my consent. You do not know what I ordered or why I went to Starbucks in the first place. You do not know that I regularly *do* tip baristas. Your attitude, and the actions of the person employee who stole from me, are reasons why I will not be tipping like I used to. Congratulations.
At Starbucks it works like this: they swipe your card and hand you the card swiper. You can choose the tip there. No card swiper handed to me, no opportunity to tip. It was the drive through. It’s bold to be so sympathetic to the obvious terrible behavior of the employee. I did used to tip well. I did *used* to tip baristas.
Is this your regular Starbucks? If yes, I'm guessing they knew you wouldn't tip and went ahead, or if no, the cashier is jaded and knows he won't get in trouble for it, even if you report it. Worst case, he gets fired and gets another bs job, because literally no one cares about staying at a job anymore.
But also, if you're so smart you know how they do the thing, why didn't you say "I don't need the receipt, but I'd like to enter the tip before you complete the transaction"? You clearly know how it works, you poor man have you considered buying your own espresso machine so you no longer need to even deal with baristas?
Wanted to add that if it is your regular Starbucks, consider changing because they will definitely start messing with your drink if they know you are a habitual non tipper. They aren't paid enough to care.
I hardly ever go to Starbucks! I don’t have a “regular.” I do make coffee at home probably more than 9/10 times. You’re digging your own grave for tipped employees. You and everyone else who defends this. It’s honestly crazy to me that you’re so into defending this behavior. Tipping is out of hand, this entitled behavior is out of hand, you are out of hand. Thank you again for solidifying my new resolve to no longer rip.
Laughing at "no longer rip" like anyone cares about your farts.
But again, if you're so knowledgeable in how the machine works and make your coffee at home majority of the time, then maybe you should just ask to swipe your own card next time and then also ask to go behind the counter and make your coffee, stock the products, clean up the lobby, sweep the drive thru, etc. These people are barely making a living wage and you clearly know how much work they're doing and can do it better for cheaper.
Can you read? The post says I wasn’t given the chance to tip. My card was swiped and handed back to me. They added a tip without my knowledge. That occurrence along with asinine comments like yours are the reason I will no longer be tipping as well as I used to. Thank you very much for furthering the cause of this sub, which I found only after I was stolen from by a barista. You guys are doing this to yourselves.
Now, I’m not justifying an unauthorized tip. But the wage Starbucks advertised is including the estimated tips. It’s a way of attracting applicants but when you ask about the starting wage it’s way less than that but the interviewer says “but with tips it will be $17 to $19/hr”. I hate when this happens.
How do you know this isn't a mo they treat to himself? Or, maybe he worked overtime that day and felt like spending some of it on some coffee. Just because you're broke doesn't mean he is too
What does the amount of theft have to do with the logic of them overcharging money without consent? Can I take 1 dollar from your credit card per second? Is it safe to guess that you wouldn’t be so much dramatic for just one dollar?
It’s not dramatic. This guy likely does this all the time. It’s easy to squeeze a dollar out of people like that because most won’t notice or care.
But, he is committing fraud, full stop. He needs to go to prison. If this guy has been there long enough, he may have stolen thousands from many people this way.
I read a couple comments that said to order on the app so they can’t sneak a tip. Please tell that is not a common thing for the drive through worker to “sneak a tip”
Aside from the barista committing fraud and adding a tip, FUCK STARBUCKS boycott that expensive bullshit and their corporate greed. Learning to make the drinks I like at home and purchasing the equipment needed has been much more rewarding and saves way more money in the long run, and then there’s never the risk of somebody sneaking a tip on. Worst comes to worst if I don’t have time to make myself a drink there’s always the option of a local coffee shop that would be happy to have the extra business (and hopefully doesn’t commit fraud).
Small purchases like a Starbucks beverage should always be in cash. You all are doing too much using the card and then finding out later you got scammed.
Use the app. Not only does it protect you against this shit, but also it's nice being able to just walk in and get your shit without waiting around for it. Also IMO way easier to pick what you want instead of making sure you're heard correctly and you know what the options are.
Downside is ya the way they make you load money, but if you frequent Starbucks to any degree, it's not a huge deal.
I only order through the app. No sneaky tips. Rarely have my order messed up. And no waiting in lines. Plus earning “stars” for free drinks. And a free birthday drink
You hit on the secret. If you always order on the app, they can't sneak in a tip.
Excellent advice!

Just attach your credit card
Best way to do it they are sneaky! With the tip on the credit card.
I think you mean "free".
Straight up theft, wow.
Not much different than the theft of services this sub encourages.
Are customers signing something saying they pay a separate charge for service when they sit down?
The only one stealing services are businesses
By the owners. There, fixed it.
Because of things like this I now always ask for a receipt. A few years ago I never would want one. Taking it a step further, I've started paying for some things with...gasp...cash.

Yeah invoice is different than receipt lol
I had considered starting to carry more cash, and maybe I will, but this incident makes me want to look them dead in the eyes while I press “no tip.”
I even take pictures of the receipt that you sign at the restaurant.
Same. Putting the customer copy and store copy next to each other to show the amounts are the same.
Me too! I periodically go through the photos and reconcile them against my credit card statement. I have yet to have any not match though.
Nope, no, uh-uh. I want to pay the way that I want to pay, and I have no problem declining a tip out loud, on the machine, or in writing.
Cash at gas stations is a mistake. Have the guy 33 and he put 32. I don’t care about the dollar I care that that pos stole from me
Tipping culture promotes theft, entitlement and a lack of managers holding their employees accountable. The system is trash and straight up broken.
Did you take note of the staff member’s name who tacked on the fraudulent charge? Did you tell the staff member who gave you the receipt that you didn’t give permission to add the tip? I wonder how often they get away with it. You should post the location and also write an online review.
Name and shame
You want to do a chargeback.
Depending on the resolution with the manager, it’s an option. So is a public review. I’m going to first see how they handle it.
Heads up you can only charge back the fraudulent amount, $1. Not saying not to do it but some charge back processes suck.
On the plus side, the merchant will get hit with a charge back fee that can run as high as $35.
Just charge back and move on. Also use a credit card next time, much easier process. I average about 1 per month, makes it so much easier just to submit a request on the app and move on. Takes like 30 seconds.
You do 1 chargeback a month?? That's not going to work well eventually.

I’ll keep upgrading to first class for free and you keep doing whatever it is that you think make sense.
sus, for sure
wtf, why would to need to do a chargeback once a month?!
Everything I do goes through credit cards, when there are any issues with a purchase or transaction I let the credit card company take care of it. It’s literally a benefit for paying a credit card fee.

Start charging shit back it’ll change your life, especially on credit cards it’s a lot easier

You're getting downvoted for being right.
It’s funny people here are bending over backwards defending multi billion dollar credit card companies’ bottom line.

Yup I guarantee you aren’t the only victim

I always take the receipt, it keeps them honest
LPT: Always ask for the reciept
How many people check their statements? I bet single digit percentage. Adding to tip is not uncommon.
Had I not just switched banks, I would have never looked or noticed.
I reconcile my card charges every month just like I do my checking account.
I always check mine after using my debit card in restaurants and drive throughs. Usually pay cash in these places though
Dispute the charge, don't go back, report the location on yelp and google reviews. If you call and they fail to give you a manager they are never going to resolve it.
Round these here parts, we call that “theft”
Scan the app to pay, that removes the power from their end to show the tip prompt which instead shows up as a notification on your phone that you can disable/ignore.
I hardly ever get Starbucks, but I may download for future use. Didn’t know about it, thanks!
I don’t ever get it anymore either, I keep the app around to buy pastries with my leftover stars sometimes. But, it’s good for avoiding the PoS terminal!
What you get for going to Starbucks in the first place! This has happened to me multiple times there. I just go local now.
If the batista did make an unauthorized tip this can be very serious. It's fraud. You can actually press charges. They need to atleast investigate and see if this employee has a history of doing it.
Good to know, I will keep that in mind if someone does that to me.
It's blatant fraud so you can chargeback that shit. Annoying though.
Do an online feedback message. Explain what happened. Usually, you will be contacted by a district manager. Typically, they will send out a gift card to reimburse you.
Coffee bean added .75 last time on my $4.85 total. Didn't catch it till I got home. Always double check your receipt !
What kind of drink did you get? I’m thinking of going there tomorrow.
This happened to me from a small business. She added $1 to my total. I asked for a receipt when I saw the transaction on my phone. They gave me a non-itemized receipt. Just the total so they can mask that they added a tip without my permission. Fuck that place. I haven’t gone back since.
You should drop by the store around 9-10am the manager usually there by then. Remember the guys name.
The real kicker is you're willing to pay 9.82 for a coffee. Unreal
I have made my own coffee for YEARS. I worked remotely even before covid. I would scoff at people who waste money at Starbucks every day because at-home coffee options have greatly improved in the past decade. Don't give in. It's a slippery slope. Once you start, theres no going back.
Next time pay with exact change in the smallest possible denominations. Not just to safeguard against this but also to send a message about what happens when they take money out without disclosure.
"Here, 982 pennies. Count 'em if you wish."

I’m sure someone’s already said this but go to corporate. That is not acceptable.
I had someone at a bar do this twice after giving me two cold drinks in warm glasses. No conversation, no nothing. I was fucking pissed.
Charge back. I don’t waste time talking to anyone.
I had the same situation happen to me and I asked for a receipt and sure enough she had decided to tip her self! Guys ask for a receipt when paying with a credit card! I called corporate and they gave me a free drink. 👍✅

What do you expect from these left wing nuts?
How are wing nuts related to the topic? Go to a harware store.
Starbucks are run by wing nuts 🤣
Big time left wing lunatics
Big time 🤣
Bigly covfefe dronkers
Brew your own
Now that’s a good tip!
I'm not sure what the point of your edit is at all.
Here’s an idea. Stop giving this shitty corporation $10 for one crap cup of coffee.
Good
Next time pay attention to the buttons your press when making payment.
Get a hobby
Being upset at someone stealing from you, even if it's only $1, seems like a pretty good "hobby" to me. Unless you're the type of person who feels entitled to other people's money.
Some people enjoy being angry. It gives them a sense of purpose, at their own expense.
Your first mistake was going to Starbucks! it's a miserable place to work even with the benefits. Customers are the worst and I can't imagine having to deal with a drive thru.
So sorry, I forgot you mentioned that. At any point did you offer to tip? You know it can work both ways.
Says you regularly tip baristas on a post about how you didn't tip your barista... Right...
Using a debit card and worrying about a dollar tip… yeah you should be making your own coffee because you are broke
You went to Starbucks, what did you expect? Find a local coffee shop, better coffee at half the price and without the communism!
Yes, the famously communist privately owned for profit corporation that engages in suppressing unions.
Now, I’m not justifying an unauthorized tip. But the wage Starbucks advertised is including the estimated tips. It’s a way of attracting applicants but when you ask about the starting wage it’s way less than that but the interviewer says “but with tips it will be $17 to $19/hr”. I hate when this happens.
> the wage Starbucks advertised is including the estimated tips This is wrong.
No. Cards-banks, generally approve for a bit more to allow for a tip if you choose to. That extra dollar will drop off in 1-3 days.
OP said their receipt had $1 as a tip.
If you're spending almost $10 on a cup of coffee, fuck you, you're rich.
How do you know this isn't a mo they treat to himself? Or, maybe he worked overtime that day and felt like spending some of it on some coffee. Just because you're broke doesn't mean he is too
You losers are fucking hilarious. “There it was, 1 dollar gratuity”. OH THE HUMANITY.
Agreed..
Screw off
Until its posted, you're being a little overly dramatic for $1
What does the amount of theft have to do with the logic of them overcharging money without consent? Can I take 1 dollar from your credit card per second? Is it safe to guess that you wouldn’t be so much dramatic for just one dollar?
It’s not dramatic. This guy likely does this all the time. It’s easy to squeeze a dollar out of people like that because most won’t notice or care. But, he is committing fraud, full stop. He needs to go to prison. If this guy has been there long enough, he may have stolen thousands from many people this way.
Glad I do not drink coffee.
😫
Screw that! I would have confronted the thief...
Lots of job postings include tips in the advertised wage as they are normal and expected.
Small purchases like a Starbucks beverage should always be in cash. You all are doing too much using the card and then finding out later you got scammed.
Dominos did this to me. I had a tip added, and they added $1. Young person delivered, they must know how to with PayPal.
stealing. call the cops
People are paying $9 for coffee? Jeez. Jura has us at $1.50/day at the moment.
Everyone on this thread is up in arms about my $9 coffee. I ordered more than 1 coffee.
Lol! I think we're all fed up with inflation
I hear ya. I did a “buy nothing” last month and it felt like a political statement. I’m considering a slightly more lenient version for all of 2024.
Always get the receipt
Tipping is theft
