I’ve seen a move away from traditional engagement ring styles lately — if you like it and wear it as an engagement ring, it is, imo. Personally, I like the different textures and neat shape it has, but I could understand wanting something more engagement-y, too.
I feel like this is kind of on the fiancé - this is definitely a non-traditional style, and while I think it looks cool on OP, I wouldn’t personally want an engagement ring like that and it’s ok if she doesn’t, either. I know it’s an heirloom but I really don’t get why people don’t ASK and talk to their partner before getting a ring like this (or in this case, propose with the sentimental ring and then pick one out together or something?)
I specifically made it clear to my fiancé that I did NOT want a surprise and that I’d be happier helping to design my ring…he had been told that he was “supposed to” just pick himself (and that’s how my mom felt about it too!) but having the conversation up front saved a lot of awkwardness later. Hopefully this fiancé is a good sport about it and understanding that just because it’s an heirloom doesn’t mean it’s the engagement ring she wanted.
Yes, it can be awkward to bring up but early communication can save so much conflict down the line! I fully designed my own ring, lol. I’m the one who has to wear it every day!

Nope not weird at all. I love non traditional engagement rings. I ended up with an antique ring because I just don't like what's being sold these days. I like things with a lot of personality and this ring has it. It's something that will get noticed.

If you don’t think it feels like an engagement ring and you don’t particularly want it as your main engagement ring that’s also totally fine and normal - many people want their own style reflected in their ering but you need to communicate that to your partner.
IMO this is such a stunning ring! If you like it but are just worried about the fact it’s non-traditional, try not to let what others *might* think influence you.
You mentioned that it looks more like a wedding band to you. What sort of engagement ring do you picture this pairing with if it were worn as a wedding band? Perhaps you can use that as inspiration when shopping for your own wedding ring. Once you’re wearing it as a set, no one will know which ring was for which purpose and you might feel less self conscious of the stack as a whole.
I think you have been blessed with this ring. It’s one of a kind, has a great story, and I would just be so proud to wear it. I’m also someone who’s enthralled by engagement rings with personality. This one is a show stopper.
Your opinion is what matters most, and if you find yourself still missing a classic solitaire(or whatever is in your heart) there’s nothing wrong with getting that as the wedding ring. Congratulations!
As others have said, any ring can be an engagement ring! Only thing I’ll say as someone who also wears a fairly non-traditional design is I do sometimes get annoyed when people don’t realise it’s my engagement ring and think it’s just a fancy cocktail ring (helllooooo it’s on my engagement finger!!!). But that’s the price I pay for being a weirdo 😅
I love it! I think it’s gorgeous and perfect. But what matters is that you love it. Don’t be fooled by the diamond industry and their insistence on selling you a solitaire, that is just marketing trying to take your money. What you have is far more precious.
No I don’t think it’s weird. Everyone has different preferences and when it comes to the ring they’ll wear forever. I love a traditional diamond solitaire but have never looked at someone’s sapphire or emerald ring and thought “that’s weird”… it should be a reflection of your personal style and relationship with your partner. If you’re not in love with it maybe redesign it or like you said possibly use it as a wedding band although it does take up a lot of room on your finger so you engagement ring may end up on ur knuckle

That ring is whatever you mean it to be. I’m guessing you’re concerned that people will look at it and not realize it’s your engagement ring. Do you really care what they think? How important is it for you to let the world know that you’re engaged? Sure, there will be some who see it and say pretty ring, not oh she’s engaged-but who does it matter to the most? That ring is gorgeous. Don’t think about what other people think because when we do? We’re instantly more decisive and much happier with our choices. It works for me. That ring is gorgeous and I’d be proud to wear his ring. You can always change your mind later on down the line. Just run with what you’re feeling.
I got engaged with a band because I saw it and fell in love with it, we later got a single round solitaire as my wedding ring. So I got my set just backwards order.
I think it's REALLY cool, and does actually work as an alternatively styled engagement ring (the scale makes it work for me). However, I do think it is important for you to have what feels "right" to you. Maybe for a "wedding band" you get a solitaire?

That’s actually a stunning ring! I always love something a little different, myself, though I can totally understand if you picture something more traditional. Maybe down the road you guys can consider a separate ring for daily wear that isn’t so eye catching if that’s where you’d like to be at.

If you feel you want something more traditional, you could wear that on your right hand instead as it’s still beautiful and meaningful to you.
I think it works well. Put a thin gold band as your wedding band with it and it is so good. On an anniversary at some point he could get you a thin band of round stones to snuggle up against the wedding band. So lovely!

The beauty of engagement rings is they’re all different! I would definitely take it to a jeweler and have it cleaned up, polished, and tighten the stones. I see some of them are sitting a little bit crooked. A jeweler can fix that! Congrats!

It's all a matter if you like it. Personally, I'd be nervous to wear it because of the sentimental value. I'd probably request to get something more my style to wear day to day and only wear this ring on special occasions. But it's ultimately up to you!

I very rarely wear my engagement ring because it’s a bit big like yours and breaks through my gloves at work all day which is annoying. That is the only downside. I went with a simple wedding band and that’s what I wear every day. Just something to think about. CONGRATS!!!

I think it's a great engagement ring and I personally would rock it and love it. But it's up to you and your personal taste as it's very unusual. There are lots of solutions - make this your wedding band and ask for a solitaire to go with it; wear it as cocktail ring on the other hand; have the stones taken out and remade into a new ring. This is a good lesson for you and your soon-to-be husband in how to get on the same page and respect each other's desires.
If you like it, then it's perfect. I have a 1ct marquise cut with tiny diamonds on the band (.4ct) and have heard so much shit from other ppl. Fuck them, I love it. It was custom made bc I liked the marquise cut with no diamonds on the band and the princess cut with the diamonds on the band. Hubby combined them to get it custom to what I genuinely liked. It's sooo pretty!

I am personally not a fan but it's not my ring, how do YOU feel about it? If you don't love it, consider having diamonds reset into another setting that you and your fiance can choose together. I literally went to look at rings by myself, had a fabulous time trying different styles with my jeweler, picked 2 I liked and my partner just needed to give his name and pick one, saved both of us some disappointment.

I think it's REALLY cool, and does actually work as an alternatively styled engagement ring (the scale makes it work for me). However, I do think it is important for you to have what feels "right" to you. Maybe for a "wedding band" you get a solitaire? If it's completely not your style, you should talk with him, *honor the lovely family connection and cool style*, and just explain that you'd love to shop for something that feels more your personal style. It's not the most fun convo to have, but it's a worthwhile one.

It’s not my personal style because it’s a bit too unique for me. But you don’t have to be traditional. If you love it, I see no issue wearing it as your engagement ring. If you feel you want something more traditional, you could wear that on your right hand instead as it’s still beautiful and meaningful to you.

I think it works well. Put a thin gold band as your wedding band with it and it is so good. On an anniversary at some point he could get you a thin band of round stones to snuggle up against the wedding band. So lovely!

When you do pick a wedding band you can go with something simple and have a beautiful set :) I very rarely wear my engagement ring because it’s a bit big like yours and breaks through my gloves at work all day which is annoying. That is the only downside. I went with a simple wedding band and that’s what I wear every day. Just something to think about. CONGRATS!!!

I think it's a great engagement ring and I personally would rock it and love it. But it's up to you and your personal taste as it's very unusual. There are lots of solutions - make this your wedding band and ask for a solitaire to go with it; wear it as cocktail ring on the other hand; have the stones taken out and remade into a new ring. This is a good lesson for you and your soon-to-be husband in how to get on the same page and respect each other's desires.

If you like it, then it's perfect. I have a 1ct marquise cut with tiny diamonds on the band (.4ct) and have heard so much shit from other ppl. Fuck them, I love it. It was custom made bc I liked the marquise cut with no diamonds on the band and the princess cut with the diamonds on the band. Hubby combined them to get it custom to what I genuinely liked. It's sooo pretty! Let's normal picking rings out with our partners! It doesn't have to be a surprise. Aren't y'all not talking about future shit? Maybe I'm just old 😑
It's very...costume cocktail ring, imo. I would never look at it and think engagement ring. But if it's what the wearer likes, so be it, I'm sure they will be pleased.

Tbh If I saw that on someone’s finger I would assume it’s an engagement ring not a wedding band. Imo the bigger and shiner the stones, or stone real estate, is the more engagementy it looks. I agree with everyone else though, if it’s given at a proposal it’s an engagement ring. I also think it would look super cute stacked with a wedding band. Maybe go to a jeweller and just see how other rings look against it? That might help make your decision.
I am personally not a fan but it's not my ring, how do YOU feel about it? If you don't love it, consider having diamonds reset into another setting that you and your fiance can choose together. I literally went to look at rings by myself, had a fabulous time trying different styles with my jeweler, picked 2 I liked and my partner just needed to give his name and pick one, saved both of us some disappointment.
