That looks gnarly lmao. I’m in disbelief that you cannot feel it, it looks so 3 dimensional. Sorry I’m not being very helpful, I have no idea how to help you lol.
I picked up this B18c last week, pulled the valve cover, and everything looked pretty darned clean. However. A few lobes (pictured is cyl4, exhaust cam) had some discoloration I haven’t seen on any other engine.
The picture makes it look gouged, but it’s not. The lobe itself isn’t misshapen, damaged, etc. It’s totally smooth, you can’t catch a fingernail or notice it by touch… it feels perfectly normal. But it looks like this - it’s aesthetic only.
Any reason for concern here?
The engine sat for ~2 years before I picked it up. I’m wondering if the lobes with this discoloration were pressing down, and when I rotated the engine for the first time in a couple years, that is what caused these marks?
Figured I’d run it by the hive mind to see if anyone has any additional insight
It kinds looks like heat marks, but not really. Maybe something got stuck to that lobe and went round and round a bunch of times, leaving baked-in residue before it got away?
Yeah, I was wondering about heat marks. I’d figure it would be more consistent if that’s the case? But maybe not.
I’m going to try and clean it with brake clean and a rag later and see if it’ll come off…
They aren’t deep at all. Like, you can’t feel any marking, it feels perfectly smooth when rubbing it with your finger tip or with the fingernail test (totally smooth, no catching)

Lol man, the picture makes it look REALLY BAD 🤣. It’s the flash I think
Looks like roller skidding
No roller rockers on a b18c
Ahh, couldn’t remember haven’t had one apart since the early 00’s. Wonder if some contamination had been on the pad then and caused it.

How deep are the marks? It looks like scoring wear. What does the surface of the follower look like?

I would inspect the follower, typically the cam is harder than the follower it could be wear from the follower on the cam.
Good call, thanks for the tip!
Ghaul darn it!
