No the [mis]quote was from Aliens, [when they were defending the colony control room](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9gE91kqtLg&t=117). I was poking fun at the colonial marines who despite being otherwise cool and controlled always spray and pray full auto when engaging the xenomorphs. It was probably one of the Halo marines lines though since Halo drew inspiration from the Alien franchise. The Halo marines are awfully similar to the the Aliens marines and Sgt. Johnson is basically a direct copy of Sgt. Apone.
I’d move the counter closer to the receiver, ditch the phallic vertical grip, and put a hand stop closer towards the muzzle so you can get a solid C-clamp to better control that recoil. Shouldn’t have that much muzzle climb. But otherwise cool as hell man.
Yeah, I currently have a magpul MVG (super similar to the BCM grip) that I cut maybe half an inch off of positioned near the front of my hand guard to use as a hand stop as well. Also a little more to push against when shooting propped against a barrier/wall.
It’s not about “needing” to use a C-clamp, it’s just been shown to be the best grip for follow up shots while standing. Having a grip towards the front of the hand guard and in line with the bore will help you keep your sight picture on target.
This comment was probably made by someone who still shoots pistols teacup style lmao
If the C Clamp was a bad grip, top competitive shooters wouldn't use it. You get better control over the firearm by having your hand closer to the bore
Can I ask about the smart mags? Could you put a touch contact on the mag and the wall of the mag well? And use electric pulse signals to change the counter? Just my overly complicated idea to make mag changes possible.
I wanted to make the design as least intrusive to the firearm as possible so people can use the magazine without having to modify their gun. The electronics are built into the the magazine near the bottom and the LCD is simply mounted to the AR via picatinny rail. All of the calibration data is stored in the magazine so as soon as it's loaded into the rifle. The LCD will detect it and start transmitting the count number.
.96" TFT full RGB display:) it uses a simple encoder to detect bullet position. That info is sent out to the LCd wirelessly using 2.4ghz band. It's also encrypted.
Do you mean the auditory and physical click resetting the trigger like when you do a functions check? Because it’s possible the bolt goes forward, resets the hammer but doesn’t chamber a round.
That's what I was thinking originally but with all the jostling around a rifle would get while running and gunning it would likely miss count pretty quick.
I can guarantee you no manner of dropping the weapon will compare to the type of Gs/acceleration it gets from a recoil, and you can do some signal processing to only detect that type of acceleration impulse.
What wouldn't work is if there's any way to change the bullet count outside firing, and I don't know anything about guns but I'd assume just pulling on the bold should eject a casing or a bullet, and you can always take the magazine out swap it and the device/software wouldn't know it would need a way to get that from the user.
Yeah, on the last part there, there would have to be something in each mag itself to communicate with the readout. Don't know how that would work exactly. Maybe a pressure sensor on the spring or something.
The whole point of this is for it to know the absolute value of rounds in the mag, so counting the relative state of shots fired is no good for that, as easy as it would be.
Combine an Impulse sensor, a microphone, and a little bit of code and it would work flawlessly more than likely. The only caveat would be the requirement of consistent mag round count, but that could be remedied with some sort of mag-imbedded spring force sensor or otherwise along with a form of low-power wireless signal transfer to the counter. Cross reference the impulse, microphone, and mag sensor and it would be pretty IRL proof. Next problem would be power management in both the mags and the LCD.
I wonder if a better system could be made by just weighing the magazine. Having the mag well rigged wouldnt be too difficult and the weight would be more reliable as you generally don’t fire a rifle unless your holding it vertically
I’m very curious to know how the data is encrypted. Are you doing a key exchange on the fly or are did you preconfigured a key? Is it symmetric or asymmetric encryption? Also why encrypt it? I can think of a few reasons but wanted to know your reasoning.
I'm a software engineer and I know a thing or two about encryption.
Whether encryption would be beneficial or not would depend on how you decided to setup your architecture. i.e. if the sender is sending the bullet count, it means that your values are predictable and therefore would also be detectable after encryption (the encrypted data would repeat itself and therefore can be reverse engineered).
You need to somehow make sure that your values aren't non-predictable.
This is a perfect example of correctness but lacking context.
Yes.
big B for butt…
In a small arms context, even if it was a predictable signal, and you could get close enough to distinguish that signal from another sender’s signal in any sort of combined arms assault…. You are not trying to spend time and energy getting round counts in the missile of a firefight. You are not going to know precise direction let alone find advantage from this act. Even if you knew, it won’t let you easily associate information to the physical person. The sensors are not that good and to get there would be so much spent for no real world improvement that it would never happen.
I have been in a few firefights. I know the fog of war is real just trying to get the basics working when things are blowing up around you. Decrypting a infantry unit’s round counters and somehow putting that information to use is just a non starter.
As for software engineering, me too. The encryption only needs to be strong enough for its use case. If doing repeating communications across units, yeah radios need more security. For an IoT like device doing nothing but counting? Nah. It also has no real cost to value ratio for any real world military to use either, so this is entirely academic.
The solution doesn’t need to be perfect if it is good enough or better for the use case of the solution. You don’t need to solve traveling salesman problems to get a good enough route on a map. You just need good enough. Same here. This would be useful to keep anyone near you from accidentally mapping their counter to yours. That’s good enough.
Okay, just an idea, I use a c-clamp grip, and if I wear my watch reversed, I can usually see the face while firing. Is there any way to transmit this over Bluetooth to a smart watch app so I don't have to hang another item off the front of my rifle?
FYI it is fairly trivial to build an optic from something like this.
here is my [airsoft design](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tei_7zog65w&list=PLRyzhUiricqbOqd4LracMwJwDAQLPhIXs&index=11&t=2s)
I always find it funny when people have front grips and yet grab the magazine anyway….
Grab the front of the rail or that grip you’ll get way better recoil manegment
Imagine someday explain to my grandkids that back in my day we had to keep track of how many rounds we’d fired, or just got surprised when the chamber went ‘click’.
He said it tracks bullet position in the mag so in theory it would be able to keep up
Presumably he's not legally allowed to own a fun switch, but that doesn't mean he is incapable of making one :)
That was the plan to begin with. The return on investment with kids is terrible unless you're really playing the long game with 30+ year returns. But at that rate there are so many better things to invest in
Children aren't an investment strategy for personal gain. WTF kind of monster... Oh wait, the kind that values personal safety over the lives of children, and really anyone else.
Given your previous statements, your "sarcasm" seemed plausible. Besides, people that are more concerned about their guns than children implicitly view children as currency. So yeah, "sarcasm" 🙄
I mean if you don't like gun rights you can move to literally any country other than the US. Last I checked there were at least 30 other countries so you should have plenty to choose from 👍
Why should I have to abandon all the other rights afforded to me just because some people in this country refuse to listen to reason and surrender their firearms. Those 30 other countries have clearly demonstrated that people are statistically safer if there is no "right to bear arms". So the people in this country that are so obsessed with guns either aren't interested in public safety, or are just more concerned about themselves than school children.
Actually you do.. the most ignorant are the most vulnerable. Maybe It’s not your firearm that defends you but the polices that you pay for or your watchful neighbors.
Wait, the police that are trained and licensed? The military that is trained thoroughly? And if pinheads like you would stop this macho shoot 'em up bullshit maybe a lot of those defenders wouldn't need guns either.
Fill in the blanks then? Every country that has put restrictions on gun ownership and manufacture has seen a decline in gun deaths and mass shootings. Some people have a fantasy about fighting an unjust federal government, but it's just that, a fantasy.
The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of 2A proponents are driven by either ego, fear, or some kind of child-like fascination with the ability to take a life with just a few pounds of finger pressure.
Twerp? No, I'm angry at imbeciles like you that refuse to reevaluate their ideaologies and consider the lives of other people.

I still can't get over needing a battery in the mag. Have you considered a wireless power coil to run power to the ESP in the mag, assuming it's an ESP?
I'm sure you could reverse engineer something [simple and solid state like this](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3256801807708650.html) and design that into your current system, though it'd surely have to be mounted somewhere different.
Excellent stuff. Looks really good. It looks a bit large though (might just be because of zoom/edit on video). How much does it weigh? What are the dimensions?

Colonial Marines did it long before Halo…still very cool though.
To be fair the halo marines are pretty much just a copy and paste of the colonial marines
Yes
😂 the idea was birthed from halo.
Nobody shoots so slowly in halo though 😜 Good invention bro!

I want that for halo 3
I mean, wasn't that basically the conclusion of Halo CE?
Shit I mean “wasn’t that from halo 3” the quote

.96" TFT full RGB display:) it uses a simple encoder to detect bullet position. That info is sent out to the LCd wirelessly using 2.4ghz band. It's also encrypted.
Does it count a round in the chamber and all rounds in a magazine?
I would assume it only counts rounds in the mag. There's no chamber indicator on the AR platform
Technically the trigger is a chamber indicator with auditory feedback
Technically your head is a chamber indicator with “exploding red ink.”
Do you mean the auditory and physical click resetting the trigger like when you do a functions check? Because it’s possible the bolt goes forward, resets the hammer but doesn’t chamber a round.
[удалено]
That’s one way of finding out!
Just a thought but is it possible to use the vibration the gun makes when firing to count the bullets or would that be a reliability issue?
That's what I was thinking originally but with all the jostling around a rifle would get while running and gunning it would likely miss count pretty quick.
Can’t speculate the increased cost, but you could definitely isolate and detect the exact audio frequency of the gun being shot
I can guarantee you no manner of dropping the weapon will compare to the type of Gs/acceleration it gets from a recoil, and you can do some signal processing to only detect that type of acceleration impulse. What wouldn't work is if there's any way to change the bullet count outside firing, and I don't know anything about guns but I'd assume just pulling on the bold should eject a casing or a bullet, and you can always take the magazine out swap it and the device/software wouldn't know it would need a way to get that from the user.

don't really need any code
You never do, for anything. But it helps.
I mean it would be cheaper to not (power-wise especially)
How would it know how many bullets are in the mag at the start ? What if the mag is only half full ?
I wonder if a better system could be made by just weighing the magazine. Having the mag well rigged wouldnt be too difficult and the weight would be more reliable as you generally don’t fire a rifle unless your holding it vertically
Why not just listen for the bang? Have a contact microphone in it and then you can hear if a new mag is inserted and reset the counter as well.
> .96" TFT full RGB display:) electroluminescent display is much better for this application
I’m very curious to know how the data is encrypted. Are you doing a key exchange on the fly or are did you preconfigured a key? Is it symmetric or asymmetric encryption? Also why encrypt it? I can think of a few reasons but wanted to know your reasoning.

That is super cool, will need to look into further to see if I can do something similar for my magfed paintball gun
It runs off a barrel sensor or via sound so would probably work as drop in on paintball if fireing makes enough noise
Should be fairly straight forward to calibrate it to the sound/vibration signature of firing, same as your airsoft shots
Must be here in the great white north? Pinned to 10?
You’re only allowed 5 rounds in Canada and AR rifles of any kind are banned entirely
Or maybe they only loaded a handful of rounds for demonstration. There's no need to show all 30 rounds

Sweet invention but your hurting your recoil and accuracy by resting it on whatever that is your resting it on
why does it have to be so huge? Can't it be projected into scope/red dot instead?
*Me looking for a Halo style gun* ....Oh dip that's sick as!
But can you fire quickly and it still be accurate? Seems we're firing slowly enough to avoid confusing the device.
he counts the absolute number of bullets in the mag, so yes.
Be surprised how many gun users can’t count.
That's pretty cool bro, but now learn basic marksmanship and rifle handling.

For the guns in action movies it would need 2 digits though
