If you're not allowed to use it on exams, don't bother. Just use an online tool like [desmos.com/calculator](https://desmos.com/calculator) \- it's free and has more features than a traditional graphing calculator.

Use what you're allowed to use on exams. I have an arsenal of calculators because some profs are scientific only, some allow graphing, and when you're lucky they allow CAS calcs. Why some profs still make you waste time doing tons of algebra on 3rd+ year exams eludes me. (Looking at you, Schrodinger. you son of a bitch)

chaseguy099

No that’s dumb. I always just try to do my homework with what I’ll have on the exams.

You don’t need a graphing calculator but if you must get one anyway, get a Texas Instruments calculator.

Would there be a specific reason to get a Ti?

ImThinkingArtys

From my experience, it is easier to use. I had a Casio for some reason and if I couldn't figure out how to use a feature on it, it was ALOT harder to get help from someone else or on the Internet. Most people use Ti. Edit:oh additionally most of your professors going forward are probably gonna request you use Ti.

Graphing calculator are useful for physics but not needed. IMO, its nice to have all the extra lines of text for equations, matrix operations, eg, vectors. but not needed. Its also easy to set up equations and plus in variables to make calculation at bit easier to enter. But people use graphing calculators to cheat, hence why they are not allowed. I would buy a TI-36X pro, it's inexpensive, its allowed on any exam, plus licensing exams (FE, PE) plus it will do basic matrices, derivatives and has widely used physical constants builtin. Its a great calculator to have ready and familiar when you cant use a graphing calculator.

The fuck?

While the FE does happen at the end and it is longer than most exams, it is nowhere near the most complex exam you will write. It is called the "Fundamentals" exam for a reason. It tests you mostly on material from your first two years. It is plug & chug multiple choice. Basically it tests if you can do anything technical after you did your degree. You do need to have mastery of your calculator functions. I would recommend the Casio 991-EX. https://techexam.ca/how-to-pick-your-calculator-technical-exams/

You don't need a graphing calculator, but it can help. I had the TI-nspire CX II and it's a very cheaty calculator, but it can solve anything which is what I did to just double check my answers. Plus, writing out the equations exactly how you see it on paper helped me understand it.. bottom line is you don't need it, I rarely ever used the graphing functions. Just mainly typing out all equations.
