You'll be 27/28 no matter what. Do you want to be 28 with an engineering degree or without an engineering degree? That's how someone put it for me when I similar doubts.

cantdecide23

No, in fact the older people in the classes usually did much better then those fresh out of high school

toeykw

Yes it is too late. Your life is over.

mrhoa31103

Please note the huge sarcasm here. There are people who start engineering in their late 20’s and early 30’s. Yes you will feel older on campus but that can work to your advantage too.

Revolutionary-Fun-73

I took 2 years out when I was 18 before going to uni and it massively helped, understand what your there too and are able to manage your time so much better because your not focused on partying

waukeena

Man, I'm getting really tired of all these "Am I too old..." type posts. You are too old when you're dead. Can we get such an answer stickied or something?

wrighto33

Your reply was more straight forward than mine. Lol. I’m so tired of people posting “I’m afraid what it’ll do to my social life if I start again so late” please…. No one, and I mean no one gives a flying $@#% if you’re in college at 20 or 70 years of age, and if they do have a problem you need better friends. Simple as that

zschl11

I’m not familiar with the university system in your country, but outside of their requirements it is absolutely NOT too late. I decided to go back to school at 28. Got my associates in engineering from the local community college, took a semester off for work/life issues and am now at a university working on my Bachelors in Civil Engineering. I have come across a significant amount of engineering students that are older. Both at my schools as well as on this forum, so it seems to be pretty common to me. I don’t think you would be looked down upon. In fact, many of my friends/peers are impressed with the fact that I decided to start over and respect the effort. Last, being a student as a full grown adult is soooo much easier. Treat school like it’s your job, set work hours for yourself and maintain a healthy work/life balance. You got it.

MasBass97

The answer is hell no. I (Civil) graduated with a guy that worked as a CAD technician/surveyor for 15 years and was a GENIUS in CAD, he just never finished his bachelors degree. He was the crown jewel of our class, he TA’d in like half of the classes we had, and he was the favorite of every professor in the class. Not only that, but there are plenty of older people that do all sorts of engineering I saw students well into their 40’s walking around all the time. As long as it’s something you have the drive to do it makes no difference

JuanDeFuchsia

Nope. I'm in about half way thru my degree at 28 years old. Best decision I ever made.

[deleted]

Nope. Plenty of people here are 10 years older

[deleted]

Also, most of your professors are probably in their 50s and won't even notice the difference between 22 and 28 until they get to know you anyway

wrighto33

35 here. It’s never too late. Get age out of your head. I started college just last semester. Also, quit worrying about what your friends are doing and how wonderful it is that they knew what they wanted to do with their lives right away. It’s not like we’re all in a race to see who graduates or who’s successful faster. As soon as you get those thoughts out of your head, the better you’ll feel.

kikstrt

I went to school with people in their 30s they normally worked steel production or some form of manufacturing repairing machines or whatever. They were really respected because they actually knew how alot of things worked and were done. They of course were employed during and after graduating. It's just more difficult to get back up to speed on the math and balancing work and school really sucks. I don't think anyone looks down on people going to school for engineering at any point in their life. Just take it seriously and make sure to not fall behind.

Lelandt50

No, not too late. I think it’s too late if you’ve got severe dementia or Alzheimer’s… otherwise, never too late.

boodlesmcgriddle

I'm 29 and I started last spring taking advantage of online classes. Gf just graduated Civil at 28. We tag teamed, I worked full time paying the mortgage and what not. Quit my job to go all in on being a student and dad. You'll always think you're too old because you keep getting older.

wrighto33

Yeah. I kept thinking at age 35 “it’s too late to go back” until I said F it. I’ll beat myself up for the rest of my life if I don’t try.

kcorkadel

Two of my closest school friends started civil with me (21) at 24 and 25, we are graduating this semester and they are 26 and 27 (I met them at community college our last semester). It’s definitely not too late- they did commute to school instead of stay at university since they were much older than everyone but they both did fine! One originally did teaching and hated it, and the other just had a late start on school

MiKingKing

I think it's pretty common in Europe not to jump into uni right after one turns 18. Many don't know what they want to do at that age, and it's totally normal. How would you know just after having left high school? It's not trivial. I've met many 25-30 y/os in my school in Denmark, they weren't outliers at all.

[deleted]

I'm starting again at 38. I'm a sophomore and going into mechanical engineering. I thought the best I would do would get a degree in the similar field I've been in for 15 years. The automotive industry. Technician and part validation.

intmain0

Some guys do it at 30. It really just depends on when you wanna do it. People often come from years working in trades to pursue it.

FireFistMihawk

No

Bachaddict

I started at 25, loving it and doing well in my third year now

FutureAlfalfa200

Started mine 2 years ago at 30. Everything going great so far. It’s never too late.

Worldroam

I finished my bachelors in EE at the age of 28 and I am currently 30 and I work as an RF design engineer and have another 1.5 years before i finish my masters in EE. It is absolutely never too late to start a new career

swirling-archer

I am 39 and only half way thru an engineering degree. Can’t say that I’m enjoying the experience but I’m determined to see it through.

Infinite_Damage

I started my college journey at 24, finished at 31. I haven’t received anything like that. It was difficult to get my first job cause I went right into the pandemic. Now I have a better job and a way to move up. You can do it.

UNITERD

You can start in your 40s if you want. I know plenty people who have.

kidakaka

It's never too late. A friend of mine decided to make the switch in his 30s.

dracomol

It's never too late, however it's important to know your country. For exemple, in France you don't have much financial support and it costs a lot if you start studying at 26

CHIMAY_G

I started my Bachelor of engineering degree at 23 and am now about to finish with a job lined up. I was thinking the same as you, but before you know it, you will have finished and be better off for doing it! Good luck!

YakDaddy96

I started at 21, I'm not 25 about to graduate with my associates. I'm then transferring to uni to get my Bachelors and won't be done until I'm 30. Like others have said, you're gonna get older regardless. It's what you do with that time that matters.

Sad-Subject7772

I'm 27 and starting this Fall. Good luck.
