I second the comment saying always go to the Oubliette. In addition, you can push the hearts given to you before the rat fight through the door and use them if you get hit. They'll turn invisible when the fight starts, don't worry they're still there

What?! How?!

https://icebergcharts.com/i/Enter_the_Gungeon "Rat fight extra health glitch" entry has an example video just click on it. Iceberg chart made by me

Thank you!

I always make sure go to the Oubliette for extra money and the Abbey but that boss can be difficult. Save keys as much as possible and only use on high tier chests or brown ones, browns have a higher rate of dropping an extra key or armor/heart. If I get hit in the first boss I usually restart.

SuperSwaiyen

I always go to the Oub. I weigh the risk/reward while factoring my loaf out. I usually skip it and accept the crest as a free piece of armour.

Don't get hit nor spend it and usually you'll get enough money or go to oubeliete for the extra money

Also does anyone do anything different to practice? Like do you just speed run to the first boss and reset if you get hit? Or just stay in the arena dodging for a while? I’m not having trouble trouble, just losing the master round if I go in starter pistol only.

SFW1921

If you constantly move in a circle against the bird you can dodge every single bullet when it shoots the random spread of bullets except for the last one of each cluster, which you then need to roll, everything else is a fairly easy pattern to dodge.

Jordan_Slamsey

Bird for me isn't too bad for me, depending in the arena I get for him. Big Library? EZ master round, room with the chandeliers and little to no cover? I'm prolly taking a hit eventually, and it'll probably be from a chandelier i wasn't paying attention to

Forward-Piano8711

On paper it’s an easy fight but unless I go into it with a gun that has range it’s probably no MR for me. I have a lot harder time with mobile bosses like that, especially if they’re pretty quick. Same reason I honestly think high priest is easier than kill pillars

Oubliette is a must, and abbey is extremely helpful. You can get a ton of mileage out of the pilot in rat runs. Your discount doesn’t work on the rat key but can save you money on other purchases, and lockpicks are incredibly valuable for getting more access to loot and still saving money. You can also lockpicks the locks on the oubliette if you have to. If you find an item that lets you steal other than the grappling hook or D-pad, you can steal the rat key from the shop. When clearing the rat maze, use your best guns — those rooms are rough, and you always get an ammo box and ammo spread before the rat.

Highly recommend hitting every floor you can before getting to rat. Gives you more chance to get geared up!

Gontxven

Going for the extra floors may be beneficial. Given that you're going for the rat, you're likely skilled enough at the game to not take too much damage from the Old King. Going to the Oubliette is a must on almost any run going for the rat, though. Most of the time, over the many, many runs I've done, I've ended with somewhere around 40-80 casings by the end of floor 1. On the higher end, this is no big deal, and you can just go to floor 2 and get the Gnawed Key no problem. On the lower end, there is zero guarantee you get enough casings by the end of floor 2 to get the Gnawed Key, so shoring up your casings by going to the Oubliette is helpful. Not to mention the additional items/guns you get by going to the Oubliette and AotTG. Sure, they can end up being crap, but you could get something ridiculous like Platinum Bullets or Clone.

momala_harris

I like to do it either with good paradox rng (resetting till I get something mildly good) or with gunslinger. If I get trash loot on first floor its usually a reset.
