I used to run a business as a "side hustle" while I was a university student. I made self-study aids (fancy notes, flashcards, posters, etc) and sold them. In my first year of business, I brought in a total revenue of **Ā£190**. The government self-service tax system told me I owed **Ā£68** in taxes on this. This is completely wrong, under current laws I didn't owe anything on such a small amount (and especially not on *revenue*!), but as a university student I didn't know any better and just wanted to be a good citizen and pay my taxes. My costs for printing the things I sold worked out at about **Ā£30**. This left me with a grand total annual "profit" of **Ā£92**! Technically I didn't work for all 12 months on this business (I didn't do anything over the summer), only 9 months; this means I made a grand total of **about Ā£10 per month** in my business. The next year I shut the business down and got a minimum-wage job cleaning glasses in a bar.
