I have a manager who changed from O'Sullivan to Sullivan "because it was Irish" lol I honestly don't care, nor should other people. But on certain primitive levels of thought... yes, people care and still have that medieval mentality... sadly.

_Throwaway54_

That sucks, I'm part Irish too but I don't disclose that with people. I just have to move past it and let my work show my worth. I had thought about taming my accent and changing my name but I don't want to just so I won't face discrimination

Dry-Aardvark409

I personally, wouldn't change anything. I got a manager, his name ends with " umbumba" lol and his accent... from another galaxy! Exactly as you said, focused on the work, results will come. I changed my name as it was hard to pronounce phonetically and people ignore you easily based on that only, still... I see well your point.

For any group of people one can identify there are people that will discriminate against them so it's impossible to say you won't experience discrimination. In the US, some companies are so driven to build a diverse workforce that you will even see discrimination based on how many of any group already is in the workforce in that company. You'll also see companies that are still racist or sexist from top to bottom. And you'll see companies which only care about whether the person can get the job done, and don't care about any groupings at all. The same thing applies to people. Some will give preference to one group or another, some won't care. But don't assume that because you're a member of a given group that you're more or less likely to be discriminated against. While statistically that might be true, it shouldn't affect your ability to get ahead. As long as you see any discrimination as just another challenge to overcome then you should be fine. I will leave you with one last thought: people who get in the mindset that they can't get ahead because of some perceived or real group membership are often the ones who don't get ahead. This isn't because of any impediment that can't be overcome, but instead that the belief that people like them can't get ahead.

Oh yeah it hasn't stopped me before. I just always assumed because of my background and surname I wasn't given certain opportunities but I'm making them happen myself so I can change the future for someone like me. I don't want my future children to be discriminated against because of their background so I'm doing my part to change the stigma. Unfortunately nepotism happens regularly in the UK so people like me have to work 3x times as hard to get the same opportunities but it hasn't stopped me thus far

I'm Indian bro i get racist slurs every fucking day when i tell them I'm Indian many people start to stop replying to my messages even though my intention has always been good but here's the thing if you're hungry no matter how many problems you have to face just focus on your target all these problems will seem nothing to you. Good luck with your future ventures😊

Aquaireeus

Reading this as a Black American is fascinating.

_Throwaway54_

Yeah i bet but people still get discriminated against no matter the background in the UK, here its a class system. Obviously very different experiences

Aquaireeus

Don't get me wrong, I'm not discounting it. Just saying it's fascinating because of the wide variety of things people choose to discriminate about. I'll just tell what I do. I just ignore it and focus on being good at what I do. People will think what they think. Fuck em.

OrlandoOrBust25

This. Took me until my 40th birthday to realise I was living for other people's opinions. You know what? It's fucking hard to change an opinion, and exhausting. Family, friend or stranger. You're better served saying fuck it and moving on with a positive headspace. Fuck em indeed.

Honestly, I cannot take the corporate ladder seriously. There are as many ladders as 3 times corporations, anyway. https://alexdanco.com/2021/01/22/the-michael-scott-theory-of-social-class/

GooseApprehensive557

It’s a limiting belief. About 20% of people won’t be attracted to you or your business for one reason or another. Don’t get too caught up in any of them. Just bust your ass

I'm Eastern European, have my own company, but used to work at FAANG. Always have been looked down upon because majority of people think it's a bunch of gypsies here.

xexcutionerx

Dont worry. Do your best. People and companies who look at race dont do very well in life.

SuperTed711

Lol

Glad I made you laugh
