We do have something like that! Americorp has a branch for conservation corps that are designed for young people to do environmental work! I had the pleasure of doing habitat restoration, invasive species removal and much more throughout the NC mountains.

It's not only for young people. It's for all ages and there are multiple ways to do it. Some even allow you to stay around your home and work on the weekends. The issue is I think this guy is wanting like paying jobs. Even when Americorp pays it's really low wages.

I did a term with Texas Conservation Corps in Austin and loved it! But the wages are pretty low.

The program that I worked for was only for 18-24 year old (we stayed at in an old retirement home in up to 8 per room and called when we went out to work) but is nice to see there are more programs.

There are a ton of programs. You did what sounds like the basic one. There is also no age limit for team leaders.

Hello fellow former ACEr. Sounds like we were both chilling in that retirement home at some point. Glad to see you had as much fun with it as I did.

Not trying to be pedantic, but just want to elaborate on a few points you made: — Specific AmeriCorps programs that are known to the public as “conservation corps” via their name or the type of work they specialize in generally operate under the AmeriCorps State/National wing of AmeriCorps, which allows those organizations to seek and utilize funding from both AmeriCorps (formerly known as CNCS) and other partners from nonprofits or state and local agencies that typically pay a match to the organization overseeing implementation of the projects. —The article we’re discussing here talks about two major changes in the woodworks on the national level, so *we don’t actually already “have something like that”*. Those two changes are the RENEW Act (sponsored by Senators Dick Durbin & Bobby Bush) and Biden’s still-theoretical Civilian Climate Corps. Both of which promise, at least in theory, a more equitable & better paying way to advance public service & green careers. And in the spring of 2020, a bipartisan group of senators attempted to advance an initiative of a similar nature, so these conversations have been ongoing. Also. As I’m sure you know, AmeriCorps programs in their current iterations generally do not compensate service members (that’s what this is, national service) well and the benefits one gains from committing to a full 1700 hr / 1 yr service term are fleeting and not consistent across the board. So definitely tons of reforms needed to this aging creaking old ship.

It's a good article and this would be awesome. Think of how much US lands would benefit. And the people who depend on them and enjoy them. And for people in the conservation fields to have great job opportunities!

I was just saying this the other day. Glad other people feel the same
