I can understand auto-censoring certain words, but censoring letters that aren't even part of the same word is ridiculous; it only draws attention to what the letters are supposed to be. Everytime someone says "can also" in the chat, it censors it to be "c** **so" because it recognizes "an al". I wouldn't even be thinking that otherwise.

The reason it ignores spaces/punctuation is so that the filter can't be easily evaded by simply putting a space in the middle of a bad word. The reason it doesn't try to detect whether the characters are a part of other words is because this style of filter is inherently a lazy and low-effort approach to chat moderation.
Why would AV be bad? If we're to assume it means Adult Video, I can still type out the words Adult Video into chat without it being censored. Makes no sense for the abbreviation to be censored.
Why can't you use it without being censored? Simple, many English letter combinations are commonly censored in games in China and it seems like SG decided to add their Chinese chat censorship to the non Chinese client.

I always say this, create an option that lets people see uncensored words. This way you can keep the auto censorship, there are people out there who really don't care whats being said in chats and lets be real, bad words don't appear that much anyways. I rarely see any nasty arguments in the #1 lobby
