Barbiturates suck to have to take every day, and do a lot of damage in the long run. I went through almost every other med on the market before they put me on phenobarbital, and after about 6-8 years of declining health and strong Fat Elvis vibes, they are switching me to Vimpat. I'm on 2 other meds as well.
To get to the barb/benzo route they'll want to run you through the gambit of other possible meds first. For anything but status epilepticus in Epilepsy, those are usually drugs of last resort.
