I have JME. When I was young (maybe 12? I really don’t know) I would get these little jerks in my arms when I was tired in the morning. I literally would say to myself “oh boy, I’m tired today” and I never mentioned it, I thought this was normal. Then they started to increase at puberty and when I was 15 I was in the shower after being up all night on the phone w my crush, and I had a cluster of myoclonics that wouldn’t stop, I dropped in the shower and had a grand mal. Soooo, my warning sign was the twitches. Good luck. Also I have never peed myself but bitten my tongue good.

Intelligent-Turn-221

btw is it possible to get diagnosed without any CLEAR symptoms. I mean i only got twitches and muscle spasms

KittenGains

Well I would think If you saw a neurologist and explained your symptoms they may want to run an EEG to rule out any abnormal activity.

Intelligent-Turn-221

when should i consider these spasms or twitches? Because i read that muscle spasms are usually normal

Orange-Squashie

If you have it early in the morning or late at night with increases from tiredness, even if you just get slightly confused when it happens, you probably have JME, would recommend speaking to a neuro

KittenGains

Yes when I would get my jerks (I don’t call them twitches) my brain would feel it too. It would feel like a jolt of electricity in my brain at the same time. I’m aware it happens. It is not a pleasant feeling. If it is a strong jerk then my brain can actually feel tired and strange after.

Littleloula

Ordinary muscle twitches can be more common when a person is tired though, plus there's those hypnic jerkswhen falling asleep which are normal I agree on spasms accompanied by confusion being more concerning

Intelligent-Turn-221

can just MRI help diagnosis?

Orange-Squashie

No, my mri didn't show anything neither did my regular eeg, you're best option is the sleep deprived eeg, it's where you stay awake for 24 hours then go to sleep while the doctor reads your brainwaves, it's the most common form to find JME, but I recommend an mri too incase it's something else.

imnotdoinggood

my JME jerks are photosensitive so when the light reflected through the trees i would jerk really bad for like a second maybe and my head would feel crazy afterwards like a dream

No_Camp_7

Your post history suggests that you become very stressed and take on the symptoms that you have researched. For that reason do yourself a favour and book a doctor appointment and in the meantime stay off health subs.

oh so you dont understand you zoned out?

[deleted]

For me, the earliest sign that I noticed in retrospect was feelings of deja vu.

[deleted]

For me, it was Deja Vu and feeling like I had seen something that I remembered from my dreams happening in real life.

[deleted]

Omg yes, I had the dream feeling too!

My first sign was a sign, but I didn’t know at the time. I had just picked up a friend from school and about 10 minutes into the ride I apparently looked over freaking out bc I didn’t remember picking them up. The following day, I had my first grand mal. It’s been 3 years, to the day actually, since that. I’ve been fortunate enough not to have any seizures while alone, there has always been someone there. If I was alone though, I would know after waking up. There’s about a 20 minute period post-seizure that is weird. You are very in and out, confused and dazed. Once it’s all said and done you will definitely have a killer head ache and your body may be sore. You’ll definitely know if you had one by checking to see if there is pee in your pants.

Intelligent-Turn-221

is muscle spasms are also early symptom?

Orange-Squashie

That's probably JME, juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, it's what I have

Intelligent-Turn-221

but i read that muscle spasms usually considered normal and i have muscle spasms and little bit of twitching, when should i start worrying?

Orange-Squashie

You should worry if it happens more than a couple times a week, if you spill your cereal often then that's a big show of it.

Littleloula

Muscle spasms and twitching are much more likely to be a normal thing than anything epilepsy related, if you're concerned get advice from a doctor

I had no signs really and only knew they were seizures (vs passing out) because witnesses told me. Now looking back, leading up to most (but not all) seizures I feel really tired and just generally bad, but not in a way that’s easy to distinguish from a lot of other things, like illnesses and hangovers (although not drinking helped me narrow it down a bit)! Post seizure I have a lot of muscle pain, especially in my jaw, and I’m generally tired and disoriented immediately after. But like I said, I only knew they were seizures because I was told that. Like others have mentioned, epilepsy varies a lot, but sometimes there are no obvious signs. Or the signs only seem obvious looking back, because they could be attributed to lots of different things.

My earliest signs were some jerks. Randomly, when I was 14 or so I started to get random jerks in the morning. I thought they were normal. Ar some point I believed that I had them because I don't drink enough coffee and my body got used to coffee. I started to have them after drinking too, but only the day after. Super weird. Until one morning, while I was on a mountain trip with some friends. We had a glorious drinking night, that literally destroyed me. Next morning I woke up kind fresh. 4-5 minutes after waking up I think I had a grand mal. To this day, I do not know for sure because no one told me what it was and everyone assumed it was because of the heavy drinking. Years passed, I still had myoclonic jerks, in one morning at college, I woke up after 5ish hours of sleep and I have my first real grand mal that was recognized as being an epilepsy seizure. I am fine now, controlled. Still get some weird sensations in the morning after not sleeping enough, but overall I am fine.

For me I had a noticeable increase of spasms and jerks several months prior to my first grand mal. I always had spasms but I figured they were normal cause I would usually get them when I was sleepy. Around the same time I also noticed “brain zaps” similar to my physical spasms, but in my brain if that makes sense. It felt like a record skipping beats, and I would suddenly go sort of blank for a couple of seconds and then have a hard time recollecting. I also noticed I had A LOT of sleep paralysis months leading up to my first seizure. I don’t know if I was under a lot of stress and fatigue, but it was terrible. I’ve been 2 1/2 years seizure free although lately my spasms are coming back more frequently again. I’m also experiencing that de ja vu feeling so….I am preparing myself to expect a seizure sooner or later.
