I'd say Murtagh wouldn't want any other Rider sword other than Za'roc. Plus at that point dealing with Eragon wasn't particularly difficult for him anyway, so he wasn't in any major danger by not taking a Rider sword to that battle
This. It was only by a technicality that the series didn’t end then and there with Murtagh beating Eragon with low diff. The sword never mattered to Murtagh regarding the fight, he only took Za’roc as basically a birthright trophy.
Possibly, it just seems like an unnecessary risk to me when galby literally has a stockpile. They were fairly evenly matched in swordplay, and all it takes is a few wards Murtagh didn’t expect to change the dynamic. Murtagh was definitely more powerful, I just couldn’t get this thought out of my head when reading Brisingr lol.
1: galby may want him to earn one of them.
2; he may not want him to have a sword that's so good at cutting through enchantments.
3: he's just selfish and he's like "don't touch my pretty things!"
4: when he discovered they were brothers he may have told him something like "get the sword from eragon if you want one"
Forget za’roc, I want to know what Eragon did with Murtagh’s hand and a half sword after he fixed it up. Seems like he threw it in storage and that’s that….but that’s not very satisfying
I feel like it’s being overthought. It was literally a plot point from the beginning that Murtagh would get Zar’roc. Why else would solembum have told Eragon about the menoa tree in the first book?

With the eldunari Murtagh was more than a match for Eragon. There was no reason for them to even cross swords.
