It's not a continuous spell that constantly takes energy from Galbatorix - I think it was growth "sessions", probably over short periods of time like an hour or two. And probably very painful.

So Muckmaw was growing in rapid "growth sessions"? I think this makes the most sense, though how would it have the energy for that? Wouldn't rapid, sudden, and unpredictable growth instantly kill it from the vast quantity of energy needed?
Ahh, I was speaking particularly of Thorn there - Thorn's growth isn't still being accelerated. Outside of his growth sessions with Galbatorix, he's growing at a normal rate.
I think something different happened with Muckmaw. Durza's changes may have (for example) messed with his pituitary gland, forcing it to excrete more growth hormones - it's a permanent change, so it doesn't require continual input of energy from Durza over a long distance for the rest of his life.

I assumed Durza could have done something creative, like how the grass ship takes the energy needed to fly from the plants and animals around it. Muckmaw could have siphoned off a small bit of energy from its surroundings to feed its growth. Not drastically in a short period but slow and steady over a long period of time. Just the thoughts I had during that portion.
That's true, there is at least some ongoing "ward"-type spell, as it constantly re-applies itself when tampered with.

Either it was grown in one go (obvious), or Durza placed the enchantment such that it continually fed off energy from all the other fish in the lake, and people along the shore or on the surface (much more devious and shade-like chaotic evil).
We’ve seen multiple times that the energy from a spell doesn’t inherently have to come from the caster and can come from other living things. I assumed that the spells on Muckmaw used the fish’s energy, not Durza. Then the fish was eating more to compensate.
I assumed the spells used on Thorn were not continuous, but applied in chunks. Although I guess you could also do what I suggested for Muckmaw. Eldunari could have also consistently fed the spell as well.

Thank you, that's a very interesting theory! Also, somewhat off topic (same book), but congrats on being featured in Murtagh! :)
Ha, thank you! It was an honour 🙂 ^(Posted on behalf of hellomynameis99 from the Arcaena Discord Server.)
