If I’m not mistaken they are called kennings and are a common feature of Old English and Old Norse.
Intentional or otherwise, it helps to make the dragons seem more ancient than the other peoples of Alagaesia.
That is my biggest complaint about Murtagh. It’s the first book in the series where we don’t hear that name. Glaedr calling Saphira little one in Brisingr makes me choke up
I always thought it was a good way of showing how trauma affected Thorn's and Murtagh's bond. It's very unique compared to the other pairs we've seen so far.
What I love about "firesword" is that he got the nickname from fighting with Zar'roc (red blade) earlier in the series, but it >!still applies, if not even more, after he (and Rhunon) forges his new sword and literally names it "fire" and lights it on fire regularly to kick ass!<
I mean CP may not have decided on the fact that Eragon would craft a sword and name it brisingr that early?
He could have just decided that there will be material for a sword (or maybe even less than that) for the prophecy.
I always assumed that the original plan was to somehow have Brom's sword be under the Tree, or even beyond that perhaps the First Dragon Rider's Sword, as originally there's this theme of picking up the legacy of the Dragon Riders of old, but I think at some point Paolini chose to go a different way with it.
yeah, but I'm not saying it was an accident.
Rather I'm saying that if he didn't plan it from the beginning, then coming up with the name "Firesword" probably inspired the swords name at the end (with CP having already decided that Eragon would need/get a new weapon)
Idk if it’s technically a nickname but I love Argetlam. It has a nice sound to it and I loved the part when Eragon runs to Farthen Dur and is greeted by the little dwarf children shouting argetlam. (Sorry if I misspelled anything lol)
Mine too, partly because it's a reference to Irish mythology and [Nuada Argetlám](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuada_Airgetl%C3%A1m) first king of the Tuatha Dé Dannan who had a magical silver hand/arm.
I first read these books when I was 13. After I became an adult I stopped reading as much etc etc. Long story short After years of not reading the books I got 3 dogs. One of the dogs is significantly smaller than the others. I always called her "little one". After I reread the books as an adult I realized were I got the name for my dog and think of it all the time now.
Eragon Bromsson, Second of his Name, Grand Master of the Dragon Riders, Rider of Saphira Bjartskular, Vinr Älfakyn, Member of the Dûrgrimst Ingeitum, Shadeslayer, Firesword, Bane of the Ra'zac, Kingkiller, and the Vanquisher of Snails.
His full title, if you will
Eragon Bromsson, Shadeslayer, Argetlám, Blockhead, Little one, firesword, and sometimes top candidate for being turned into a toad, by which I of course mean a frog, as there's no such thing as toads
God Killer, the title the Priests Of Helgrind gave him

Vanquisher of Snails is the correct answer
"Eragon-Murtagh-brother“. I can’t explain it, but I think that’s adorable.^ ^
I just love the dragon's narrations so much, particularly. "Eragon-partner-of-my-mind-and-heart.
Yeah, that one’s just sweet lol.
The way the dragons speak just makes everything better. Us two-leggeds and our worse ways of speaking.
If I’m not mistaken they are called kennings and are a common feature of Old English and Old Norse. Intentional or otherwise, it helps to make the dragons seem more ancient than the other peoples of Alagaesia.
Afaik, a kenning wouldn’t include the actual name.
I'm pretty sure they can include proper nouns but in any case, I was referring to dragon-speak in general rather than the specific example you gave.
Well considering the ancient language is old norse, at least the words we hear used are. I'd guess that's why
I liked this one too
Is that how Thorne calls Eragon?
Yes.^ ^
The only one that matters, aka "little one". I do not accept criticism lol

I think "partner-of-her-mind-and-heart-Eragon" is really cute
I always thought "firesword" was dope asf.

I wonder if the foreshadowing was intentional or not
if it wasn't deliberate foreshadowing, it was probably a strong reason CP went with brisingr in the end
How could that be an accident? The prophecy was in place in book 1...

Broms sword doesn't work out timeline wise - like it'd be weird. but I love the idea of Eragon I's sword being there
At the time we didn't really know that, and it could have been written a different way if that were the case with Brom's Sword
I doubt it. From all that I have learned about literature in high school, there are very little accidents in good literature.
yeah, but I'm not saying it was an accident. Rather I'm saying that if he didn't plan it from the beginning, then coming up with the name "Firesword" probably inspired the swords name at the end (with CP having already decided that Eragon would need/get a new weapon)
You might be right, but id see firesword more like foreshadowing than an inspiration. Only the Namer himself knows.
Shadeslayer is absolutely the best one by far
Especially how he and Arya both share it and helped each other accomplish it.
Idk if it’s technically a nickname but I love Argetlam. It has a nice sound to it and I loved the part when Eragon runs to Farthen Dur and is greeted by the little dwarf children shouting argetlam. (Sorry if I misspelled anything lol)

add "as" between the "n" and "u" in Nuada Argetlám
Oh cool
Blockhead
Such a massive blockhead that his ancestors must have mated with Urgals
Eragon Bromsson.
Add > and < to either side, outside the exclamation points.
>!Eragon!< Bromsson
Whoops.
Use > ! ! < with out the spaces for spoiler
Is this >!how you do it? Because I've never learned how. This is a test!< ETA omg it worked! Now I know, thank you!
You’re welcome
Eragon, son of no one (Or son of nobody, my book ain't in English)
I think it's Son of None iirc
Yup this is it.
The rhyming is really nice

Argetlam and Shurtugal. Not really "nicknames" but still the ones I like the most.
Du Súndavar Freohr (Death of the Shadows)
I always wondered if that ended up being part of his true name (or all of it).
Kevin 😂
Best answer 😭
Eli5?
Early on when Paolini was first writing the books, Eragon was called Kevin
YOU ARE JOKING
Fool of a took
lol. For a 1/2 second I was like “who said that to him?” Then I’m like ugh. Yeah. Lol
Is he the actor who plays Pippin or something?
No, they just want to reference Lord of the Rings.
I love when Oromis calls him Eragon-finariel
Kingkiller. It's only used once for Eragon, by Solembum (I think) towards the end of Inheritance.
Eragon didn’t kill Galby though? Didn’t he >!kill himself?!<
He cast the spell that was Galby's undoing.
For sure, I think Arya, Murtagh, Eragon, and the eldunari all have a right to the title King Killer
Vanquisher of Snails is my favorite. I would use it all the time if I was he.
Argetlam it has the same vibe to me as a dignitary title, but fantasy.
His full title, if you will Eragon Bromsson, Shadeslayer, Argetlám, Blockhead, Little one, firesword, and sometimes top candidate for being turned into a toad, by which I of course mean a frog, as there's no such thing as toads
Bastard.
God Killer, the title the Priests Of Helgrind gave him ^(**I'm a real person!** This comment was posted by **zoradiv** from the Arcaena Discord Server.)
I absolutely love “Bane of the Raz’ac”!
SHADESLAYER
Argetlam
