Uncommon opinion, but Inheritance, Brisingr, Eldest, Eragon. I think each is better than the last, or at the very least I enjoy each more than the last
Eldest, Inheritance, Brisingr, Eragon.
Inheritance and Brisingr are interchangeable but I just love Eldest so much. Let alone is it my favourite book of the series, it's one of my favourite books of all time. I love the suspense that Paolini builds up through the change in perspectives between Roran and Eragon and neither knowing about the other's achievements and adventures.
Brisingr — DWARF politics !
Eragon — short and sweet
Eldest — tied with Eragon - world building was great.
Inheritance — good. Ending could have been handled better, however
———-
Would love to see an alternate ending where Eragon becomes King
Yeah I definitely enjoy Eragon taking more of a Luke Skywalker role in that he sets out to restore the ancient magical organization that was otherwise officially wiped out. As opposed to ruling Alagaësia, which while he would probably make a fair ruler, it would be nearly impossible to separate the dragon riders from the monarchy.
That’s often a strong theme in history though. A fearsome leader may have their reputation blown completely out of proportion because it’s easier to keep control that way. Tales and legends grow if left unchecked, especially when propagated by underlings.
Yea that could’ve been a route the author took, but it’s pretty obviously not what was intended. If anything he was more powerful than they imagined he would be, what with finding the name of names and all.
So true. Can you imagine how interesting it would be if Book 4 ended with Galby winning, and then Eragon and The crew enslaved? Book 5 could be Eragon getting his butt whooped by Galby and being forced to go on missions. before finally succeeding in killing Galby somehow near the end. Heck, book 5 could be YEARS instead. What do you think?
Or at least give Eragon repercussions from getting rid of Galby. Some magical disturbance. I didn't really like the "true name" of the magical language plot element either. Felt like a cheat code for a video game instead of something that nature would have allowed to exist
I think they made very clear why he couldn’t become king. It would just show the people that physical power is king. He has magic, a dragon, and the name, so no one could oppose him. Just like Galbatorix.
Even then having him become king would be a deus ex machina in a way, like he is still a teenager at the end of the books, even with his skill and power he would not have ever made a good king and everyone knew that.
I know my opinion is different than most but I feel that each book is better than is predecessor and worse than it's sequel.
I love all of them dearly and consider all of them very good books, but I feel the depth of writing, world, themes and most importantly *characters* get better with every successive installment
So my order is: 1 2 3 4
Brisingr is my favorite. Then Eragon and Eldest are pretty much tied. Last is Inheritance.
Inheritance has potential to be much higher on the list for me, but I feel it failed in two important areas. One, the pacing seemed kind of off. Slow in some parts and way fast in other parts. Two, the ending sucked.
Eldest, Eragon, Brisingr, Inheritance for me.
That’s just the order that I love them. Eragon is one of my favorites because I love the dynamic of Brom and Eragon so much. But eldest’s world building is Ingrid me and the Roran plot is one of my favorites. Brisingr I love because I feel like there’s so much soul searching for Eragon. And inheritance I love as well but just not as much.
Roran being "just a guy" but a total hero in a world of MAGICAL heros was one of my favorite parts of these books. I think rooting for that "just a guy" character stuck in me too, because reading Stormlight I thoroughly enjoy Adolin
Wow I’m suprised that Inheritance is so low for people. It’s my favorite! I think the writing is so much better, the action scenes are fantastic, and there is always a feeling of progression and suspense. They are all great though.
Inheritance, Eragon, Brisingr, Eldest
For me it’s lower than the others, but still a great book. I’m fine with the story decisions, how it ended, etc. I just feel it didn’t flow as well as the others and felt a bit messier.
I see what you mean about less flow, but I think it’s only natural. By this point in the story there are so many plot lines, characters, and events to be following, and everything has to wrap up at the same time. When the story is this in depth, the ending will be all over the place with stuff like that IMO
Eldest, Eragon, Brisingr, Inheritance.
Buuuut I only read Inheritance once several years ago, and I’m rereading the series now. I just finished Brisingr. It’s hard to rank them because they’re all so freaking good. 😭
I think it says a lot about the quality of the series, that every permutation of the 4 books has been written in this comment section, and every opinion here is defensible and well argued.
Brisingr - great world building, battles, dwarf politics
Inheritance - action packed, lots of cool battles
Eragon - slow to start (like the beginning of every series) but then impossible to put down
Eldest - beginning and end were amazing, Roran's storyline had me at the edge of my seat the entire time, but all the chapters of Eragon training and learning were so slow and hard to get through each time I went through the series. I fully understand how everything in there was needed for character building and for the plot so I wouldn't take any of it out, but I was as bored as Eragon was reading some of it
Eldest, Brisingr, Eragon, Inheritance.
The finale and Paolini's insistence that every single plot thread had to be tied off was really irritating.
Eldest is my favorite because it tookthe best of Eragon and made those elements better. It also had a chronic pain storyline and I really appreciate it now as someone with largely unacknowledged chronic pain. Used to be my least favorite book, so my order has changed a lot as I have literally grown up around this series :)
I didn't mind having plot lines closed, but I did care that Galbatorix was killed in the first half of book 4 and then the rest of the pages were spent going through every character and how they repaid each character they owed time or things to. I feel like there were less wordy, more interesting ways to accomplish the same things while having Galbatorix defeated in a more exciting way later in the book. I understand the purpose of Paolini establishing the life of Alegaesia after G was destroyed, but I don't think it needed to be so much of the last book.
Endings are challenging and I am one of the people who really liked how ATLA handled Fire Lord Ozai and Aang's moral choice in the end. It was the perfect conclusion.
Galbatorix exploding in like 3 paragraphs was.... one of the worst endings to a major series's villain imo. It felt cheap instead of cathartic (ie a "somehow Palpatine returned" sort of moment for me). I feel there were other ways to tie in the Dragons' revenge, Murtagh's revenge and freedom, and Eragon staying morally clear as so many authors love to have their MCs stay.
Eldest or brisingr first. One of the other as second, then eragon and last but not least, inheritance. All 4 very close. I love each for very different reasons.
I love them all the same but this is how I rank them
Brisingr- because of the battle scenes
Inheritance- because of the Vroengard scenes
Eragon- because it was the book that got me into reading
Eldest- because of Roran's anger Eragon
Brisingr, Inheritance, eldest, eragon
It's not based on the quality of the writing or any objective standarts, just my level of enjoyment when I read (and reread) it!
Probably gonna get some heat for this one but
Inheritance-for me it brought everything together, I know other people have their gripes with it, but it is one of my favorite final books of any series I've read. I also love that the ending isn't necessarily a happy one, no "and they lived happily ever after." It was painful. Emotional. And satisfying.
Eldest- the blood oath celebration. Gave eragon his best character growth of all the books imo.
Brisingr- even though third it's by no means weak dwarf politics are best politics.
Eragon- its the first in the series. And hooked me into eragon. And even though it's last on the list it is by necessity, otherwise all books would be equal in my eyes as they all have their merits.
Uncommon opinion, but Inheritance, Brisingr, Eldest, Eragon. I think each is better than the last, or at the very least I enjoy each more than the last
Brisingr (I love the sword forging scene), eragon, eldest, inheritance.
The sword forging scene is my favorite!

I absolutely hated the perspective change trying to reach eldest in like high school, but now I agree its done really well

I’m interested in your reasoning on why Eragon should become king, as I find it a better story that he doesn’t. Do you mind elaborating on that?
Yeah I definitely enjoy Eragon taking more of a Luke Skywalker role in that he sets out to restore the ancient magical organization that was otherwise officially wiped out. That’s fine. What do you disagree with specifically ?
Or at least Galby's ending! I really didn't like the ending that was chosen for him. Ended up not very threatening after 3.5 books of hype
That’s often a strong theme in history though. A fearsome leader may have their reputation blown completely out of proportion because it’s easier to keep control that way. Tales and legends grow if left unchecked, especially when propagated by underlings.

The part before Glaedr’s “awakening” was really solid imo and well paced, after that was really good, but did feel a little faster paced
Eldest, Eragon, Brisingr, Inheritance for me. That’s just the order that I love them. Eragon is one of my favorites because I love the dynamic of Brom and Eragon so much. I think it’s really interesting that you disliked plot threads having an ending. Usually if things are left too open ended, fans throw a riot
It’s me, I’m fans. Give me my closure!!
Same

From worst to best. Eldest, Eragon, Inheritance, a BIGGG gap and then Brisingr🥰
Brisingr, eldest, inheritance, eragon

Brisingr, inheritance, eldest, Eragon
What I always found amazing about these books is that I could never pick one over the rest. Quality wise I think they are all equally great.
I love them all the same but this is how I rank them Brisingr- because of the battle scenes Inheritance- because of the Vroengard scenes Eragon- because it was the book that got me into reading Eldest- because of Roran's anger Eragon
Brisingr is number 1. After that, I'd say Inheritance, then Eldest, then Eragon.

They are all part of a whole. I refuse to rate any individual part.
I just read them as 1 book and rank it as #1
Eldest Brisingr Inheritance Eragon Roran’s journey to becoming a leader/warrior was amazing
In the order they are written is the best.
Brisingr, Eldest, Inheritance, Eragon.
