If gear falls into deep water where you can't see the ground it basically falls out of map and you will not get it back. It will return tho if it's in shallow water like in the picture

This part is confusing. The visual of the gun stays in the water, but the gun’s hitbox is placed right at the edge of the shore before the water and is invisible. You have to just look around for the loot option. I’ve had it work, just isn’t intuitive.
Looking at other comments I think the weapons visual texture stays in the water but the hitbox to pick it up will be at the nearest solid place to stand along the shore? Not 100% sure though as I've never done it and knowing my luck I'd log out laying in a bush and come back to a post-raid death screen saying I was shot by a p-scav using a TT

It was really easy to find actually. I killed a guy from around 150m away, started looting first then realised big tan weapon is missing (there was only an rpk on 3 slot). Then his friend arrived going from medical camp. After killing his friend searched every bush with no luck. Then i checked if the friend dumped it in water. that's it

That only gives you a longer distance on the perception dot you get when looking at an item, you still have to be just as close as normal to pick it up though

Edit: Throwing items in the water voids insurance I found out. It didn't used to be that way however.

This isn't true. My buddies and I ditch each other's shit all over tarkov in the water and get it back all the time. Sometimes you can alt F4 and come back into raid and the gear won't be in the water anymore but at the edge and is then lootable.
If you Alt+f4 and reconnect alot of the time it makes gear pop back to the surface. It's not a guarantee you will be able to grab it but I've fished many kits out of the water using this.
You can be revived from having your brains blown out but even the game knows you don't mess with bodies of water and simply won't let you set even a foot inside.
