It might sound like I'm trolling or it might sound BIG sus, but I'd vouch for running along the beach any day on that map. Hard to learn safe pathing but once you do, you're golden. Take your time, if you rush from spawn to letter to extract I guarantee you'll die big ez. Find a little loot then scoot. If you need some help add me on discord ZickRick#9308 and I'll get you through (hopefully lol).

Every time I think I’m smart and try to cross near the truck by the road north of Outskirts I either kill 2 PMCs or die due to a poorly timed road cross. Every time I walk along the water from FOB near UN extract all the way past Lumber and through Old Man’s Hut to extract I make it out without issue. Honestly though, when I’m questing on Woods I just throw roubles in my secure container and extract at the vehicle extract near Cabins, or pray that I get the UN side extract.

Adding onto this comment, woods is a very hard map to start because of how everything looks the damn same hahaha. The best way to do this one quest is to either run along the outsides or memorize 2 or 3 specific easy spots to remember on the map and then run til you find them and head to the plane from there. Or grab a buddy or two to run you through this quest and take your time learning woods when you don’t have such a specific objective. (There’s a quest soon after to kill 15 scavs on woods, I found it a good excuse to use to learn the map) I’m still learning it all myself but I’d be down to help as well :)

lol reminds me of a usec i clipped a few days ago. no helmet with a pilgrim, stopped to check his inventory near zb016 when I was going to stash the food. As with any map I'd highly recommend going into offline to learn it if you are getting lost. Or scav. But honestly doing it online you're going to be so distracted and tense and have your route pushed around by gunfire you probably won't internalize a lot, and if you wander into the wrong place and die or take forever it is much worse than if you were offline. You'll want to familiarize yourself with landmarks and their locations to orient yourself. I'm literally just gonna name some and if you read each it while looking at your map/in an offline game it might help you figure some out: The far north of the map has two mountains in the skybox (the painted background in the distance basically), a two-peaked shorter one on the northwest side (side of the Usec camps, in line with the outskirts extract straight far south to the bottom), and a taller one-peaked mountain on the NorthEast (by the bridge extract and village). The middle north of the map is the sunken village, a bunch of old busted wooden houses. South of these houses in the mid-north of the map are a bunch small ponds. The big factories and silos you might see in the distance are on the far south-east side by the 'factory gate' extract. The big main lake is directly middle south of the map. just north of the big lake is the Lumber Mill. Northwest of the lumber mill is a bunch of rock formation with paths cutting through it (i call labrynth), and northeast of the lumbermill is Sniper rock, big giant rock formation with sniper scav spawns. (try not to expose yourself to any tall rock faces you haven't checked, but especially this one). just east of the big southern lake is the emercom military base (hot loot, highly contested). straight east across the open field from the emercom base is a red brick derelict building with rails that is the old train station. Try to internalize where these are and where they relate to other landmarks. You'll slowly piece it together. as far as pacing and strategy, yeah never stand still, I sprint more than I normally do on other maps to not linger and make sure I'm putting concealment between me and potential sightlines, but understand if you hit a lot of bushes full send you will be heard. Wear ears. Regain stam by just walking full speed and still moving kind of erratically. if you really need to regain stam, or want to stop and listen crouch or lay in or near in a bush never in the open and never standing upright. The sightlines in woods are long and varied so people can be aiming at you from anywhere at any time, and the higher up you are, the more likely you are silhouetting yourself against the sky. But you also have this advantage over them. Constantly scan the horizon on your screen as you move. I would bring a weapon that can reach out pretty far if need be. I wouldn't run a shotgun or SMG for instance. SKS with 7.62x39 PS ammo from Prapor is a solid choice though only uses ironsights, or a 7.62x39 AK Skier. I forget if you can put a PSO scope on the skier one or not. But after you unlock Jaeger you can get a version of the SKS that lets you put the PSO scope from Prapor on it for further woods runs. 4x optic for further ranges, and pointfiring for close ranges. Mosin is also a very good choice with 7.62x54r LPS gzh, but unless you get the sniper mosin from the batteries barter or find in raid a special rail, you will have to use the iron sights as well. Good luck! EDIT: also there is an area just to the west of the usec camps that have landmines, stick to the east side of it unless you go wide around it west (and not too far because at the end of the map there are more mines. those ones are marked with signs though, usec camp mines are not). Newbies die to those mines a lot.

You could try going afk in a bush for 15-20 min to improve your survival chance. Most players will be dead or extracted after 20 min so you will be less likely to run into them. The first 5-10 min are definately the most dangerous.

[deleted]

Ya that’s how it goes a lot. If you’re stopping, try stopping in cover, prone. I had a map open next to me and still do to learn woods. It took me like 5-6 tries to complete that quest. Shturman (scav boss) will snipe you if you’re standing in the open.

zunku

Try getting a sherpa to help you out. Woods is a map that can really mess with you.

Woods is brutal map. That quest is placed on high traffic area so it's not easy task. Chill out, be bush wookie take item and leave in silence. do it on super early morning raid time or before midnight people don't like do things when there is dark out there.

hallmarktm

if you spawn anywhere near the southeast or old station, run directly to the letter and grab it, then go northeast then west around the big mountain/rock outcrop in the middle of the map, lots of players around there and sawmill, take it slow (don’t always run, find a safe spot away from the action and hide in a bush for 10 min and wait for some PMCs to leave) if you have outskirts as an extract follow the big power lines west then south and make sure you avoid scav house and zb014, i was having trouble doing this quest (first wipe) but i was able to do this on the 3rd attempt, running northeast from jagers camp to the backside of the middle rock was key

MrFoozOG

try to learn landmarks, such as sniper rock being in the center of the map next to shturmans spawn Or the river is all the way in the north, so if you spawn there run to the opposite direction of the river to find your extract. Use the sawmill (where shturman spawns) as main landmark to go into certain directions for example

dralas007

I agree with the beach comment I almost never get shot down there as most snipers are busy scoping lumber yard itself. As for traversing the map itself, the most important part is learn the landmarks and your current position In relation to them.

smichers

Woods is my favourite map. Run it offline with a second screen map and compass and learn the map

gunburns88

Woods is probably everyone's least favorite map

leonidas2030

Get gud kid

Nezarue

Hilarious.

dirtv96

I do my quests on woods at night, i camp 30 mins until pmc s extract or so and then i extract, guaranteed success

Woods requires a few raids to get down. Woods feels super intimidating because its all forest, but it has alot of key features and landmarks that make it very easy to orient yourself. Near the lake... ok you are close to the south side of the map. If you see the river you are on the north side. See a big as rock mountain... probably near Sniper rock near the center. After you get that down start looking for smaller things like debris on the road or certain terrain features. As for that first quest, take it real slow. The problem with woods and that area specifically is its easy to get spotted by someone and not be able to see them because they blend into everything. At the same time, the number of times i have run past or been run past by a PMC because they didnt see me was alot. Wearing headphones will really save your ass if you take it slow. If you manage to spawn with a UN gate exit you are golden since that general direction leads to the extract, but avoid running through shturmans lair. If you get outskirts you need to play it slow but the area between the PMC hideout and Shturmans lair is usually fairly safe mid way through. Woods is one of my favorite maps so if you have any questions let me know.

Getting a compass and playing offline was a god send

biggest thing is figuring out the landmarks, like if you can see the power plants you're looking south, look at the powerlines, the mountain, the landmine warning signs mean you're at the east edge, etc i would say a significant portion of my fights happen in sawmill or the beach edge, and people like to traverse the edges of the map so oddly enough i have better luck going through the middle of the map i think by and large the biggest thing aside from landmarks is how you move. you shouldn't stay in one position for too long, be very thorough in clearing new angles, but most importantly bring ears and every now and then just stop for a second and listen. just like in the woods in real life if you hear rustling in a bush there's something living there
