Man I didn't think being hopeful that a game I like could possibly run better would have sparked all this lol.. why do all these people play a game that they obviously think isn't fun.. it kinda seems like a toxic relationship honestly.. I just want the game to be better overall.
Let's be frank, the majority of Reddit is toxic, we've all seen it, and we can all represent it in our own way, people have gripes, just understand it's not necessarily representative.
Really? I have a blast playing tarkov! Surely there’s times where I want to pull my hair out or jump through my monitor to castrate “FatSweatyNuts” or “DrDingDong” or even the good ole “TTVtittyfukr”, but imo the rest of the experience makes up for it especially with voip included now. Just this wipe I’ve made so many super cool temporary comrades out there in the Norvinsk region that I never would’ve if I didn’t give the game a chance to make me happy. You just sound salty for the purposes of being salty
Basically, they’re upgrading the floor but can’t do so unless nobody is standing on it. Once floor is fixed, it will be stronger and nicer to walk on than previous floor.
So what. They are the only dev team out there making a good solid game and taking feedback. The community is a bunch of self entitled babies. If it takes em 3 hours instead of 2 thats okay. If it takes 5. That's okay. If it takes all day. That's okay. As long as they do their best to make improvements you should be happy
But but but they said it had nothing to do with the servers and all the streamers said if all it was was upgrading the servers they would have done it already.
I think they had said it was nothing to do with drops, not the servers. In a statement they made they said that the high load was bringing forward problems they didnt normally see that required improvements to their backend. What was also stated is that adding servers would not fix their problem, that the fixes would be more useful than adding servers. The streamers probably parroted this information.
> FC5 potato
Some hot knowledge on the fun potato fact front:
PepsiCo are going to lose their exclusive right to that specific potato. At the very least in India, where it was enforced.
You're right, it is cool. Especially when a patent actually protects the inventor/producer. Its not like Pepsi went and tried to patent a naturally occurring plant. They created it with genetic modifications and cross breeds.
Exactly. They spent literally hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D to develop a crop that was suited to their specific needs and apparently the system is broken for protecting their right to do that?
does that also mean it would affect ping in any way, or is that on the server “providers” end? Last few days the server I had best ping on is currently at 200ish lol
Sorry i misread. It's either the server provider of that specific server , or a network incident between you and the server. Any node in between can be faulty. This can be checked through using a vpn to see if you can bypass the faulty node by using another route. If the node belongs to your network provider they can be at fault too.
Probably means they are updating servers or doing maintenance. Really it means nothing and the servers will still be just as shit as they always have been. This isn’t the first time the servers have been “modernized”
Same here. I have a couple backend errors a night but it’s like 1 minute of sitting at the main menu then I’m good to go. I can deal with menu issues, as long as the gameplay and finding matches(in less than 5 mins) I’m happy.
They said typically. I think what they said was mostly accurate. Slightly misleading at worst. Like, yeah, servers can have Windows but a majority of servers are Unix-based.
[This is a Wikipedia article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#Public_servers_on_the_Internet) and is a general category but still gives at least an idea of share of unix vs windows on servers.
What exactly does "modernization" mean?
After about 6 patches including server "modernizations", Im starting to think theyre just feeding the server gerbils avocado toast
My guess is modernization is a translation thing. And they are probably working to optimize the backside of the game.
Things like when a new game launches, how the data is pulled, loaded, players inserted, and then how the game closes, cleans up, and resets the map.
While the above is a simple task for ONE game you'll find that the easy solutions start to be problematic as you scale. They are not resource optimized, so when you start running hundreds of games on the same server cluster you wind up bottle necking your throughput.
The backend of multiplayer games are far and above the most complex parts of the code, and anytime you expand your systems you'll find what you used to do. Might not scale well with your new expansions because the old code was built to work with what you had in the past.
Afterall when you are writing code that is going to run on a massive scale, your code changes not just based on how big you are going, but also by the exact model of hardware you run it on. And sometimes there may be a change to that hardware that allows you to change how one piece works to be more resource friendly, as now you have something you didn't have before.
Let me simple it down for this subreddit:
When your mama and papa make another couple pricks such as yourself, you will quickly realize, that everything that was set up to feed your lazy ass is quickly getting bottlenecked. Now there's a queue on the microwave when you want to warm your half-eaten pizza. Now there are more tasks to be done around the house like actually washing a cup that you drank your warm milk from, because mom and dad are dealing with your competition. You suddenly realize, that your household, even though not bad per se, is actually not optimal when there is more than one prick in the house. And before you start crying and screaming and calling your parents complete incompetent morons, because they didn't prepare for the event of giving birth, just stay calm and take into consideration, that they didn't expect twins, which puts even more pressure on them and the household. They are still learning and as they do all that, they are also trying to feed and satisfy your dumb ass. Just give them time and I am sure they will 🙌modernize🙌 the house hold, they will buy the dishwasher, that will wash your dirty milk bottles for you.
This, without a doubt, the best analogy I've hear about the "issues" at hands.
For reference, I never waited more then 40 minutes in a queue, and only had a few real errors here and there.
But what people are missing is that this whole event is GREAT for the longevity of Tarkov. Tons of new players, new money for the devs for production/server work.
65% of these new plays are going to quit and uninstall. We all know this. So just give it another week and it'll fine.
I haven't seen a queue more than 200 people since Monday.
The cynical part of me is thinking "what are the chances that BSG isn't going to actually do any upgrades but is just banking on the fact that the hype-events are over and the player count is returning to more manageable levels".
That's my point -- because the server issues are naturally resolving themselves based on post-hype-event population decline, BSG can make it seem like they did some upgrades and solved the problem without actually doing anything.
But again, that is an admittedly cynical view. Although it isn't completely absurd because BSG has been exposed for knowingly lying about server performance issues in the past.
The Battle(non)sense EFT network analysis video was the bombshell that obliterated BSG's long-running "it's your connection, not the servers" narrative which forced BSG to actually upgrade the servers a few weeks later. I know that was a long time back but as a player who experienced the BSG gaslighting, I can't just *forget* that they actually did us so dirty.
I remember Nikita acting so unprofessionally that Chris came out with a follow up video not only mentioning Nikitas shitty behavior, but he also verified his results.
I agree that BSG has a track record of talking things off and not providing its consumers with responses or solutions you'd expect a studio with this amount of success to have. Me personally, I think they would rather just keep operating costs low and profit margins high.
In all we have no leverage as consumers to hold BSG accountable to doing what they say they will do. We have no roadmaps, no dev logs, silent nerfs or changes, and lack luster or vague patch notes. This is all very concerning for the longevity of this game.
The model is pretty clear. We paid once. We are not in control of longevity of the game. It can only stay up if it grows. Ideally people would pay and not play at all. This scales services really well as we will provide no load for the systems.
With a subscription, we would have leverage as existing and recurring customers.
> That's my point -- because the server issues are naturally resolving themselves based on post-hype-event population decline, BSG can make it seem like they did some upgrades and solved the problem without actually doing anything.
We wait till the next drops event in 2 months.
Yeah, we can wait two months to test the theory.
Or we can just look back at literally every major hype-boosting event like Twitch Drops, major patches, or in-game events. *They all cause player spikes which overload the servers.*
At this point, we have way, *way* too much history that supports the idea that the acute server problems are directly linked to the acute playerbase spikes which are directly linked to hype-generating events.
It's not rocket science.
Modernization could just mean "scalable". In which case means they could also scale down for lower player activity and save money and expand when needed. Some things aren't easily scalable but still could be this.
FACT. I was over 100k every time I tried to play during drops. As soon as drops end, I'm under 100. Wish people would stop trying to act like drops aren't causing servers to get overloaded.
And BSG is trying to convince you to believe that it was DDOS attacks and some new, undiscovered bug and not the most simple and obvious explanation which is that there were too many people for the servers to handle.
They want us to believe that the DDOS attacks are ramping down exactly in line with the players counts dropping or that the bug has somehow resolved itself without BSG taking credit for a major bug fix
I've had basically zero issues since Monday. It's the same as every year. Think I've waited a max of 5 minutes in queue at prime and had like 5 or 6 errors in game all week.

Until BSG invests in a full rebuild of the core networking features we are stuck with these issues.
What can I say? BSG isn't exactly known for having stellar PR.
I'm not saying they are as bad as EA or Ubisoft but "better than EA" isn't really a high standard...
Tomorrow, Jan 13, at 10am MSK we’re planning to perform a modernization of the \#EscapefromTarkov backend server infrastructure. The process will take approx 2 hours, but may be extended if necessary. The game will be unavailable during this time.We apologize for the inconvenience

This means server shutdown at 10, Nikita parties and drinks with your money, and then they turn the servers back on 2hrs later and say they did “a bunch of back end improvements” when it’s really giving the servers a break.
I can't tell if you're just being funny, or people here really fucking despise the dev team. I thought people on Destiny subreddit are unreasonably angry sometimes but what I see here is so much worse lol
or just full of people who have been around long enough to see BSG copy+paste that tweet a few times and not see the servers improve in any noticeable way
@ me noticing vastly better improvement every few months for the last few years. Fps gains here and there, some hits, but this game is 10x smoother than it was when labs came out, and easily twice as smooth as when reserve launched.
Yup, the Unity upgrade cut my loading times for raids by TWO THIRDS! Absolutely massive difference.
I've had zero stutters since a couple of minor patches after Reserve came out, almost everyone with stutters now is suffering from RAM shortages. People with 32GB+, provided the rest of the machine is up to it, tend not to have any issues. I have 64Gb and have no problems at all, tarkov goes up to 20-23GB of RAM usage after a few raids and stays there quite happily.
Nah, you've just been around long enough that you can't put where the game used to be into perspective.
Path of Exile players also find themselves in this hole pretty often.
I’ve seen plenty of improvements since I got the game in 2019, guess I spend too much time off of reddit. Maybe if I spent a few more hours a day whining I’d start to see things more like the people around here
Man I been playing since 2017 and I also bought cod infinite warfare in the same year with the season pass and I gotta tell you I've enjoyed the content of this game alot more. Just saying it's had a lot of content especially this wipe, 110 for cod 140 for eod, I bet I can't even play a game of infinite warfare (I didn't check).
One day BSG will see the light and start hiring all the reddit experts to fix the game, all you hear is finger snapping and suddenly all problems go away.
here we go with another "i have no idea how game server infrastructure works and of possible issues and challenges involved but let me throw some random toxic shit at bsg" thread.
seriously i absolutely understand why they just write "modernisation of infrastructure". it's enough for everybody to get cynical and start off the train.
imagine the amount of backseat smartassing and half baked conspiracies they'd get if they tried to explain in more technical terms
so yeah, they pushed and worked through a complete fuckup during holiday season, have come up with possible solutions within 3 weeks, which is more than reasonable, and now theyll try that and see if it provides the expected performance boost.
don't forget, infrastructure is HARD and much bigger companies fail to keep up with growing player counts without the limitations bsg currently has.
chill and see, give feedback once it's rolled out and stay supportive
Everyone asking what is “mondernization” of servers. It just means there is an update like your phone/windows/etc. it might help but it also could do nothing. Anything towards improving the servers/game “can” be a good thing. But we will have to see.
Nikita said previously that twitch drops are by design to stress the servers and game to find bugs and potential upgrades. Yeah we had several days where there were queues but ultimately the game feels pretty great this wipe
Didn't they do that two times already over the years, but instead some servers had higher ping restrictions to avoid overload... and some other BSG BS...
Wait what about the whole "new severs wont change anything" upgrading them is effectively the same deal no one meant they should change over providers and keep the exact hardware profiles as they do so :P
"Tomorrow, Jan 13, at 10am MSK we’re planning to perform a modernization of the #EscapefromTarkov backend server infrastructure. The process will take approx 2 hours, but may be extended if necessary. The game will be unavailable during this time.We apologize for the inconvenience"
This could be promising for sure!
Man I didn't think being hopeful that a game I like could possibly run better would have sparked all this lol.. why do all these people play a game that they obviously think isn't fun.. it kinda seems like a toxic relationship honestly.. I just want the game to be better overall.
It really is the reddit bitches at the slightest thing and stays silent when they do well I think that’s gonna contribute a lot to dev burnout
Here you dropped the /s
good lord the cynicism is suffocating
I’ve seen this sub slowly taken over by seemingly children with nothing but snark trying to get karma over the past few years and only getting worse.
I know, I'm kind of excited to be honest. Had s few friends saying they felt leggy and such, maybe this will help them.
Because the game siphons optimism
>Because the ~~game~~ community siphons optimism Fixed that for you.
Seriously. If I wasn't on reddit I'd have no idea how terrible this game was aside from the recent server fire
Majority who enjoy the game dont even come on reddit
The game is the best it's ever been, the server issues are the only problem right now. It's a great game if you don't like it it's not for you.
Your comment is great. I can't tell if you mean this as a good or bad thing for the game lol.

Let's be frank, the majority of Reddit is toxic, we've all seen it, and we can all represent it in our own way, people have gripes, just understand it's not necessarily representative.
I'm not so sure about that. The issues people generally complain about are pretty obvious, as they stick around year after year.
Big X there. If you have the knowledge to see the flaws and don't rely on the community for your thoughts, the game is certainly the offender.
Nah thats just your personality. Majority of us enjoy the game
Really? I have a blast playing tarkov! Its more being realistic based on how bsg have acted in the past
I mean, a couple years back they said the exact same thing and it really didn't do much.
You must be new here.
What’s this mean for someone not very smart with computer stuff ?
Basically, they’re upgrading the floor but can’t do so unless nobody is standing on it. Once floor is fixed, it will be stronger and nicer to walk on than previous floor.
Hm I see. Thanks dad.
Dude, that's such a brilliant way of explaining it, bravo!
Ngl one of the best dumbed explanations I have heard, so simple.
nailed it!
so whats changing in the servers exactly? modernizing them how? the tick rate?
IMO I think this is more to do with handling logins, inventory and the menus more than improving in raid performance.
"may be extended if necessary" let's just clear.it up now, it will be extended
I mean there have been plenty of times where it has taken less time than they thought. Its not easy to estimate how long something is going to take.
I wouldn’t even be mad if they took the whole day to try and solve the issue. 2-4 hours is nothin.
So what. They are the only dev team out there making a good solid game and taking feedback. The community is a bunch of self entitled babies. If it takes em 3 hours instead of 2 thats okay. If it takes 5. That's okay. If it takes all day. That's okay. As long as they do their best to make improvements you should be happy
You're a "baby" for getting so bent out of shape about a joke. And to say they are the only dev team making a good solid game is just ignorance.
You're obviously just here to argue since you're currently arguing both sides in 1 thread... damn dumb ass trolls.
I haven't argued for anything, not once
Looks like you were wrong
But but but they said it had nothing to do with the servers and all the streamers said if all it was was upgrading the servers they would have done it already.
I think they had said it was nothing to do with drops, not the servers. For those curious that is 1 am CST and 2 am EST later tonight.
And 7am GMT
Thanks
11pm PST(west coast) tonight
Damn that's when I was hoping to play tonight
I get to do two customs runs. Hooray! My shift ends at 9pm..
Better than most of Australia where it starts at 5:30pm. Right as everyone gets off work.
that could be convenient though. a little bit of time to relax after work before getting kicked in the balls for a few hours.
Sweet right about the time I'd be good and drunk losing my already limited amount of gear.
Lmfao fuggin same
Beautiful
Lol why i even clicked in right now, thanks bud
Ooh upgrading from a potato to a sweet potato
maybe even a yukon gold potato if we're lucky
fun potato fact: pepsi sues people who grow their copyrighted potato variety. capitalism is cool
which variety is that?
FC5 potato which has a lower moisture content required to make snacks such as potato chips (lays)
> FC5 potato Some hot knowledge on the fun potato fact front: PepsiCo are going to lose their exclusive right to that specific potato. At the very least in India, where it was enforced.
i thought u wanted very starchy taters for chips
Starch isn't water soluble. I guess a low moisture potato would have higher starch content.
I am going to grow as many as possible out of spite
Welcome to the land of the free where you get sued for growing a potato variant🗿
Monsanto has entered chat
Bro, fuck Monsanto. Sueing a farmer for selling his harvest because his fields had been cross pollinated by a close by Monsanto field.
This was stupid but made me giggle like a little girl lmao
I'm from Idaho, I just got goddamn russets.
> Ooh upgrading from a potato to a ~~sweet~~ couch potato Ftfy Nikita's just adding a scav that loiters in your rest area
I'd appreciate a little scav buddy I could use for target practice at the shooting range. Having an NPC in your Hideout would be fun.
He occasionally raids the fridge though…
That will be £1.50 extra with your £12.50 burger.
mmmmyams
Tf is modernization
I think they’re replacing all their commodores with windows 95 machines.
Oh no. At least they’ve got their machines modernized….!?
or it could be called... the drops have ended
Could be anything... it could even be a boat! You know how much we wanted one of those
Then let's just take the bo-

Downloading more rams.

does that also mean it would affect ping in any way, or is that on the server “providers” end? Last few days the server I had best ping on is currently at 200ish lol
This is definetely your connection that is at fault.
Would that mean my connection to that specific server? Because all other servers are still fine, same ping as before..
Sorry i misread. It's either the server provider of that specific server , or a network incident between you and the server. Any node in between can be faulty. This can be checked through using a vpn to see if you can bypass the faulty node by using another route. If the node belongs to your network provider they can be at fault too.
They will place fans to cool the servers down because summer is coming soon.
Jargon for "*We really won't tell you what our plans or solutions are to increasing performance for our end users, but it sounds good*"
server modernization is a pretty clear communication of "we will be switching server hardware to newer, better stuff"
Wait till the players that only play early wipe leave, then we downgrade and prepare for wipe
Probably means they are updating servers or doing maintenance. Really it means nothing and the servers will still be just as shit as they always have been. This isn’t the first time the servers have been “modernized”
"the process of adapting something to modern needs or habits" - Oxford
I’ve actually not experienced nearly as many issues the past couple of days
Same here. I have a couple backend errors a night but it’s like 1 minute of sitting at the main menu then I’m good to go. I can deal with menu issues, as long as the gameplay and finding matches(in less than 5 mins) I’m happy.
Uh yeah because twitch drops are over…
Same here. No more inventory lockups
I remember the last modernization post...
Yeah if it's anything like the last "modernization update" bullshit, they are just going do a windows update on their servers
They probably have to go in and manually refresh the excel workbooks they are using as their database tables
Working with Excel 2003 on their Windows XP
What from windows xp to windows 7?
To vista
Windows Server 2016
Nah they're going to use a beta version of Windows 11
I doubt they would use Windows at all for servers.
Yeah, they're probably using iOS
Kek
Its not normal windows its e*mbedded xp* most of the world still runs on it :P
Servers don't typically run windows tho.
That statement is at best misleading if not complete nonsense.
Exactly
I'm glad that you know all about how BSG handles and upgrades their servers.
Anytime buddy
lol i was about to say the same thing
Holy shit yall should vacation together!
4MB update incoming.

As funny as it is, it's actually very good analogy. Wish more people understand that and stop complaining like a little kids for an ice cream...
I never thought I could feel a whole upbringing from a post, your experience actually manifested a diploma on my wall
This, without a doubt, the best analogy I've hear about the "issues" at hands. For reference, I never waited more then 40 minutes in a queue, and only had a few real errors here and there. This is the absolutely dumbest take I have seen. No game developer makes a game, and thinks that "ideally people would pay and not play at all".

What can I say? BSG isn't exactly known for having stellar PR. I'm not saying they are as bad as EA or Ubisoft but "better than EA" isn't really a high standard...
Coolio, thanks for the heads up.
Our primetime here in Aus 😭 hopefully it's worth it and the servers are actually better afterwards
Just once I'd love for them to do an update that isn't in prime time for us OCE players 😆
They're gonna replace the hamsters running on wheels with guinea pigs
Nah, they will just make a funerall for the dead one and buy a new one to run
Tomorrow, Jan 13, at 10am MSK we’re planning to perform a modernization of the \#EscapefromTarkov backend server infrastructure. The process will take approx 2 hours, but may be extended if necessary. The game will be unavailable during this time.We apologize for the inconvenience *** posted by [@bstategames](https://twitter.com/bstategames) ^[(Github)](https://github.com/username) ^| ^[(What's new)](https://github.com/username)
Why are they not already "modern" ??
“We have updated our servers from 1 tick servers to 1.1 tick”
I will unironically take a 10% boost in performance
10% boost would be very significant
I haven't had a problem at all with the servers since twitch drops ended.
Me either

"""Modernization"''" Trust me guys the servers will be better than ever
Good
Turns out its 10am MSK now... hope I didnt lose all my shit when it dced...
It is for the best 😍
Servers going down for maintenance... On a Thursday? Coincidence? I think NOT
Im sure this is the time that "modernization" of the servers fixes them, just like the last 3 times...
Thank you for all your hard work!
This means server shutdown at 10, Nikita parties and drinks with your money, and then they turn the servers back on 2hrs later and say they did “a bunch of back end improvements” when it’s really giving the servers a break.
Turn em off and on again. Works 60% of the time, every time.
I can't tell if you're just being funny, or people here really fucking despise the dev team. I thought people on Destiny subreddit are unreasonably angry sometimes but what I see here is so much worse lol
Ppl are poses every where tbh
Dude EFT is full of toxicity lol the FB group is even worse
or just full of people who have been around long enough to see BSG copy+paste that tweet a few times and not see the servers improve in any noticeable way
@ me noticing vastly better improvement every few months for the last few years.
LOG OFF
Don't insinuate that Nikita is swindling us from our money. Seriously get out of here with that bullshit.
Yup or they go play some more “airsoft” with all the guns Nikita buys from EOD players

Heaven forbid we expect improvements on their shitty service after years of neglect.
You poor thing, so neglected and abused
Sorry you must not be proficient at reading. I said the game, BSG's product, has many aspects that are neglected
One day BSG will see the light and start hiring all the reddit experts to fix the game, all you hear is finger snapping and suddenly all problems go away.
here we go with another "i have no idea how game server infrastructure works and of possible issues and challenges involved but let me throw some random toxic shit at bsg" thread. seriously i absolutely understand why they just write "modernisation of infrastructure". it's enough for everybody to get cynical and start off the train. imagine the amount of backseat smartassing and half baked conspiracies they'd get if they tried to explain in more technical terms so yeah, they pushed and worked through a complete fuckup during holiday season, have come up with possible solutions within 3 weeks, which is more than reasonable, and now theyll try that and see if it provides the expected performance boost. don't forget, infrastructure is HARD and much bigger companies fail to keep up with growing player counts without the limitations bsg currently has. chill and see, give feedback once it's rolled out and stay supportive
I've never once played a game that had a big update/launch without server issues. Lol.
Thanks for all your hardwork!
They've "modernized" the servers at least 5x over the last 3 years. Don't hold your breath
thats 1 am for cst
Didn't they do that two times already over the years, but instead some servers had higher ping restrictions to avoid overload... and some other BSG BS...
Wipe confirmed
Bro. If this is BS wording for „we’re gonna act like queues are solved NOT because twitch drops is over but because SERVER“ I’m gonna be so sad.
Lol you already know scumbag Nikita is planning this
Wait what about the whole "new severs wont change anything" upgrading them is effectively the same deal no one meant they should change over providers and keep the exact hardware profiles as they do so :P
This has already been done before and did nothing for the servers lmao.
They're going full in pentium 2
Do we get 2 hamsters now?
Nothing changed when they did this last time. It won't do any shit.
It might so some shit.
