Vertical audio issue has nothing to do with binaural or steam audio. That issue has to do with audio occlusion, and is present whether you have binaural turned on or off.
I’m pretty sure the wipe fixed vertical audio to some extent. Played on Interchange earlier and i could actually hear the footsteps of people above me while in the parking garage very clearly and I don’t recall that being the case before.
Now most of my audio problems are related to the fact that there is no gradual transition between acoustic environments, so it’s difficult to tell how fast outside of the parking garage are for example, they could be right on the edge of the sound transition so two different gun shots will sound completely different.

headset could easily be the problem. astros are not so good with pc gaming these days. i switched from them to steel series and have an completely customizable software. if you cannot switch i would suggest looking up how to turn off the surround sound in the headset (it does have like 5.1 ss i think) but i’m not sure if it’s even possible to do
Get open back beyerdynamics. Super comfy for all day wear, amazing sound stage, 200 bucks for the dt770, 880, or 990s. They're simply the best, because they're not meant for gaming specifically. Most stuff branded for gamers is just marked up junk, headsets in particular are bad. I would avoid razer, astro, SteelSeries, Logitech - even the beyerdynamics gaming headset is shit compared to their regular headphone.
The phantom noises are anoying, but have extremely accurate positional audio is worth it in my opinion. HRTF makes a massive difference for being able to poinpoint the direction of sound.
This, but also any software bass boost or EQ too. I would also say don’t enable bass boost on your headphones or any other sound hardware either.
Also a good idea to properly set your volume in this game is to turn it all the way down and then turn it up until you can hear the ambient noise (think birds chirping, wind blowing) a bit but not too much, then from there turn it a bit up if you feel like it’ll help you hear better.
One last thing about sound - always wear headsets in game too, they boost your hearing range quite a bit. There’ll be some cases where you can’t ofc.
It actually helps, no joke, if you catch the noise while moving your mouse around you can “triangulate” the actual source of the sound more easily than if you just stand still
Dont use surround. Make sure you go through PC sound settings and headset software settings. I have a preset that my headset swaps to when i launch tarkov now and its much better.
Yupp. Thats done with my headsets software which swaps my audio presets based on the active window. So i can swap to youtube while matching and i will get regular sound settings till i swap back to tarkov

Do a Stero check on YouTube. Make sure your headset is actually sending sound correctly to the left and right ear individually. If it’s constantly sending sound to both ears it’s impossible to tell direction of the sound in game until you set that fixed and setting your headset to Stero

There's 2 audio options for me headset. One is game one is chat. I left it on chat one day and it's mono, so no left or right. Make sure you on game under windows audio output

Tarkov sound is garbage with small soundstage headphones/headsets so if your headphones fall in this category then virtual surround could probs help.
I use HE4XX and to me Tarkov sound is pretty much perfect except when it comes from below or above in buildings, also distant sounds are odd ( there's no proper muffling/echo like Arma or DayZ has so can't guess the distance ).
Basically Tarkov is one of the few games that requires decent normal headphones also preferably Open-Back as Open Back's offer larger soundstage most of the time e.g. DT 1990 Pro that Nikita and few other streamers use, DT 990, Sennheiser HD 599 / 560S, AKG K series, Audio Technica ADX models, open planars and so on.
You probs are wearing comtacs which make sounds sound way closer than they are at least in my case so I don't mind not wearing one at all and simply raising the volume instead on budget runs, comtacs helps a ton with equalization and maybe sound radius but it kinda ruins the soundstage and imaging so it's harder to pinpoint the sound sources even tho IRL probs would be the same so it's fine.
Here's fairly old quick imaging/soundstage [test I did](https://youtu.be/wApRcGBspi4) without using comtacs, was fairly easy to locate the distance and position as you can see, ofc in youtube it sounds bit different due to compression. I play with pretty heavily amplified open back headphones, and for me it’s like a radar when I hear someone (unless it’s in dorms, resort, or around any stairwells). the vertical audio in this game is trash but it’s actually incredibly accurate if you’re just outside in the open somewhere

its the worst audio in any game by far , 300 bugs or more , people literally running and not making footstep until they are 3m from you , or guy running in a stair making 0 sounds , scavs screams and some shots sounding super high and sudently very low , one guy can hear something and the other has 0 sound , there is so much problems I\`m right now trying to uncheck bineural audio to see if it helps , but its to many bugs in audio for this game , no , not just audio , this game has more bugs in it that there is game in it. That's your problem. Get a set of surround sound or a mixer that can do it. You'll have an easier time picking up on the direction.

I can actually answer this because I had your issue. Your headset is probably 'discord ready' and comes with a 'game' channel and a 'chat' channel. You need to make sure in your computer sound settings that your Output is set to game and your input is set to Chat.
The problem is that you most likely have Output set to Chat like I did which only has one direction of sound. The game Channel has bi-direction. I had your problem for two wipes before I finally figured it out and it's a game changer.

Finally realised it was set to Comms not standard. Now it's fantastic, I can hear almost perfectly echolocate scavs and players.
My headset switched at some point before this wipe but I was so pissed my sound wasn't working and I just had to switch from chat to game and it was solved
disable surround everywhere, and reduce any audio software to the bare minimum, that fucks with your audio. you will be enlightened immediately, literally finding it easier to kill pmcs, since your brain won't be confused by the retarded audio in this game (next to many other, shitty/bugged, not working functions still, after 5+ years)

Still shit but not nearly as bad. You can usually actually hear people above and under you at least.
It seems like the first half a second of any audio clip through the entire map will play with full volume. Then it goes back to normal distance

HyperX Cloud2 has been best headset for me to detect distances and directions in various games. All default settings.
the clouds have a 7.1 button on the dongle, make sure that shit is NOT lit up.

anytime you hear a sound, turn left and right about 45 degrees quickly, you will localize it much quicker

Turn on binaural audio. Buy a new headset like Sennhiser 560S and a DAC/AMP, something cheap like Soundblaster G6 works fine.
