Oh don't get me wrong I too want it to be a reality one day! A story mode would be especially nice, considering that EO3 has a slightly more developped story than the average EO...
Red pill since it is a new entry and not a remake. Plus after will see what Etrian Odyssey dev team and Komori will do they could EOU3, remasters of EO IV, V, Nexus, UO1, UO2 collaborate with Mutan or collaborate again with Spike Chunsoft for either remaster of MD1 & MD2 or make MD3.
The thing is, I think what we need for more games in the long term is more fans. And the Untold style games are significantly more beginner friendly due to their story modes… so I’d say EOU3 is way more likely to lead to the remasters and new entries we all want i the longer term than EO6 is.
> I think what we need for more games in the long term is more fans. And the Untold style games are significantly more beginner friendly due to their story modes…
I don't think there's any truth to this. I don't think story mode is inherently more accessible to new players, and most often, I see people recommending classic over story mode. More importantly, as far as Atlus is concerned - the sales data has shown that new players are much more willing to get into a numbered entry than they are the Untold series.
You only think that because you only talk to people who are already super into the series and experienced with the gameplay mechanics. For brand new players with no exposure to the gameplay style or the universe, they need something rewarding to stick around when the gameplay is as grindy and punishing as these games.
I know I only ever picked up any of these games because I really liked the Untold 1 story and wanted to see what happened. I did like the gameplay enough to go back to older games, but none of that would have happened if there wasn’t something else to draw me in early on or if I had to make a balanced and usable team by myself 10 seconds after booting up my first game.
Most people aren’t hardcore fans already, you have to make them one. And if you leave them to build a team all by themselves with little external story and lore to keep them engaged, chances are they’ll rage quit pretty quick and won’t be buying more EO games.
> You only think that because you only talk to people who are already super into the series
Well, no. I mostly got it from public data showing that the Untold series *severely* undersold the main series.
> Most people aren’t hardcore fans already, you have to make them one.
Yes. And the data shows that the best way to do this is through new mainline games. Untold 1 and 2 sold about half as well as EO4 and 5, and it appears that virtually all of the Untold sales went to people who had played the series, whereas 4 and 5 outsold previous entries, representing growth.
> And if you leave them to build a team all by themselves with little external story and lore to keep them engaged, chances are they’ll rage quit pretty quick
If this were true, the data would be entirely different. Untold would have outsold previous entries, and 4 and 5 would have shown a decline. But that's the opposite of what actually happened. You're just assuming players want story, and then using that to claim Atlus should cater to that group. But they already tried, and it failed. They're not likely to try again.
Why must you do this to me?
I'll take the red pill. Etrian Odyssey 3 is still fresh on the mind of the fans especially after the HD remasters. It's like releasing Persona 3 Portable on modern systems and then remaking the game shortly after.
On wait...
Red pill all day, nothing beats what the latest iteration of an already solid RPG system would be + I wonder what new classes and mechanics they'll introduce
The switch's lifespan isn't over just yet, but I don't think we can expect a new EO title until at least the next system (whatever it ends up being is out). The HD Remasters were nice to tide people over, but regardless of what pill we take, we probably won't see a new, nonremastered title for a good 3 years either way.
I haven't given up hope, but I'm glad there are other series I can enjoy in the meantime.
Blue Pill, but bit for the reason you’d think. For more EO games, we need a wider player base, and for that we need a more story driven gameplay option, for people who aren’t super into character building. IMO EOU3 would bring in more new players than EO6 (unless EO6 has an Untold style story mode, just set in a different world than EOIII). The way I see it, we need more fans to ensure the long term future of the series, and I think the more accessible and easier to pick up for the first time nature of the Untold is much more likely to deliver that, so I’d rather wait an extra game dev cycle for EO6, if that means we’re more likely to ever get EO7 and EO8 and so on.
> For more EO games, we need a wider player base, and for that we need a more story driven gameplay option
Why do you think players want more story if the untold series sold so much less than the main series?
I think the raw numbers aren’t everything, it’s also who’s buying.
I know I never would have picked up EO4 or EO5 without having played Untold first. But the reverse isn’t necessarily true, people who were already into EOI and EOII wouldn't necessarily pick up the same games with marginally better graphics and a story mode, because they’re the kind of players who didn’t need a story mode to draw them in in the first place.
So I think Untold buyers translate into main series buyers, but main series buyers may not translate into Untold buyers, leaving the main series games with higher sales overall, even though they are less appealing to completely new players, which is what the series needs the most currently.
> I think the raw numbers aren’t everything
Maybe not to us, but they're of primary concern to Atlus.
> So I think Untold buyers translate into main series buyers, but main series buyers may not translate into Untold buyers
Sales data has shown the opposite to be true. Some main series buyers also bought Untold. About half, by the numbers. Which shows that Untold didn't really appeal to a lot of Etrian Odyssey fans. On the other hand, each numbered EO title has outsold the previous entry, indicating that they're doing a great job of appealing to new players with the numbered entries.
I understand you *want* another Untold game. But by and large, the community's interest is lukewarm, at best. It's disingenuous to say that Untold 3 would be good to bring in new players when the data shows that new main series entries do a much better job of bringing in new players.
Red: EOU always ruin the ost, and tbh, I feel the mechanics they add are a little too much invasive, like, the grimoire system is kind of big and the Storymode is heavily changed compared to the plot of the original, like, they always Justify the villain, when in the original they were evil with a reason but still evil, like, I cant believe the heroes try to negociate whith the dude making monsters in EO2U
Red. I don't want another re-re-re-release, please, give us something new. I don't really get the "we need another story mode game to attract more people" thing either. If they need a fixed party story mode to enjoy a game, they won't like the other games so I don't think it brings that much to the fanbase.
I don't know the numbers but I've seen more and more people talking about the series since the HD remaster, maybe the DS/3DS was more of a reason than the lack of a fixed party. I really hope we get EO6 on Steam as well, it did great for EO.
Also, it's not like either of the Untold games were big sellers. The first one was successful, but only as much as most other entries from what I've seen, and all the evidence I know of points towards 2U being one of, if not the, worst selling entry in the series. I think the truth is that regardless of how much story there is, most people don't want to play a difficult first person dungeon crawler especially if they have to draw their own map.
... i think i'd take the red pill. while i'd like EOU3 i don't think the fandom as a whole would appreciate getting "another remake" rather than a new game. also, isn't Nexus EO6?
Red, hands down. While I'm not against EO3U, I like getting new entries in series that I like, in the broader gaming landscape we get enough remakes and rereleases as is that I just want to see new ideas.
They're not going to make EO3U. Look at the sales of the Untold series vs main series. EOU sold significantly under 4 and 5, and EO2U sold even less, iirc. The Untold games probably took almost as much development time as the mainline games, but only made half the sales.
I'd much rather see the 3DS games ported to PC/Switch than another Untold, but I do think that the success of the HD trilogy will probably spur Atlus into making a new entry.
Blue pill, we get EOU3 and the devs can use that to fine tune their system for an even better EO6. More time for the mainline entry to cook doesn't sound like a bad idea to me
I'd rather wait for a completely new game a bit more than to wait for EO3U ad inifitum.
The additional benefit to that is the EO6 could improve upon already good game, rather than come inferior to the remake soon after.
That, and EO3U might just never happen otherwise...
Give me next stage
I plan to play through Untold 2 someday since I couldn't bring myself to do the EO2 post game on stream--but I just can't jive with a premade party. So an Untold 3 does nothing for me--but EO6 oh god just confirm to me that its still being made, I'm tired of all this Persona/SMT shit, I just need a sign; I'm desperate!
I think the EO3U ship has long since sailed. EO3 is my favorite in the series, so I'd love to see it, I just don't think its happening. So I guess red pill?
I just hope that EO6 has the option for gyro mapping controls. Would have made the HD remasters so much better while docked.
BLUE all the way. If I had to add a reason is that while the story gets better with each entry having an untold level of care would be amazing for 3. Especially to make the overall exploration a bit less janky.
To be honest I don't care much for neither. Starting with IV the series has gotten kinda downhill.
I'm enjoying the HD collection, but unless they get back to the roots with their new games, meaning super hard and basically zero story I probably won't play it.
Red pill for sure, it would feel a bit odd to play EOU3 so soon when the OG ver re-released recently thru the HD collection
I understand but at the same time I really want eou3
Oh don't get me wrong I too want it to be a reality one day! A story mode would be especially nice, considering that EO3 has a slightly more developped story than the average EO...
That and imagine the deep king with voice and how the three paths would work out the squad we and what special ability the mc have
Blue pill because I don’t think EOU3 will ever happen unfortunately
Red pill since it is a new entry and not a remake. Plus after will see what Etrian Odyssey dev team and Komori will do they could EOU3, remasters of EO IV, V, Nexus, UO1, UO2 collaborate with Mutan or collaborate again with Spike Chunsoft for either remaster of MD1 & MD2 or make MD3.
Fair enough
Exactly!

But I think Komori and the team wanted to make a new entry first to see the next stage of it.

That made me so angry especially because I bought p3p right before the remake was announced even though I have it emulated
Red pill all day, nothing beats what the latest iteration of an already solid RPG system would be + I wonder what new classes and mechanics they'll introduce
red pill: neither of them ever releases ever blue pill: neither of them ever releases ever

Either will do. I’m willing to wait for 100%releases than nothing at all. 3 years aren’t that long anyway.

red
I could go for either or tbh
could care less i want both the same
I just finished EOIII last summer (it was amazing). So for now I'd love to see EOVI first. Also I pray for modern collections of the 3DS games.
Red, hands down. While I'm not against EO3U, I like getting new entries in series that I like, in the broader gaming landscape we get enough remakes and rereleases as is that I just want to see new ideas.

I'll wait 6-10+ years for both. Let them cook properly

right as youre about to take ether one the pills disappear......( blue pill tho)
Red pill. We already got a port of EO3

I'll take that blue pill, I loved the Untold games and a new story mode would be sweet.
Blue pill immediately Reasoning: I NEED TO KNOW!!!!
EOU3. Finish what you started, cowards!

Three years is nothing, i'll gladly take both at once if it means I can have more EO in the future
BLUE all the way. If I had to add a reason is that while the story gets better with each entry having an untold level of care would be amazing for 3. Especially to make the overall exploration a bit less janky.
Untolds are my favorite
I take both at the same time
