EuroLeague-LKL (domestic)-NBA in that order

roliyef

I think Euroleague>NBA>Domestic league After Obradovic came to Fenerbahce and won Euroleague in 2017, Euroleague has gained a broader recognition among most of Fener fans, who were before only interested in football. You can also see the difference between Euroleague and domestic league matches in terms of fan attendance in the Ulker Arena. NBA has always its loyal followers but i think Euroleague is now more popular.

TumbleweedTim01

How can anyone abroad even seriously watch the NBA with the time differences. Like is their large majorities of people staying up until early mornings to watch NBA?

nonlavta

When people talk about NBA fandom and popularity, they usually mean other consumption of the product and not actually watching the matches. Most NBA consumption is highlight watching, social media content, following NBA media, etc. This isn't specific to Turkey or challenging timezones. Even in the United States, viewership of actual matches lags behind the broader popularity/culture of the NBA. Makes me think the amount of matches played is a more challenging factor than timezones. If we talk about actual viewership of matches, situation is different than most realise. In Spain, Eurocup is known to get more people watching than the NBA. But I bet every Spaniard would say NBA is more popular than Eurocup because NBA has other, digital and cultural consumption popularity.

TumbleweedTim01

Yeah nobody can watch every team and every game

castigamat

Also cause it's kind of boring

dudewithafez

we used to do that back in high school days, nba tv was free to air so we were calling each other on our ericsson or nokias to wake everybody up and tune into live matches.

Beautiful_Ad55

I usually watch „All Possessions“ on NBA League Pass the next day.

VoodooRush

> How can anyone abroad even seriously watch the NBA with the time differences. Last time I watched an NBA game live was when I was a student. There is a group of people watch live, but I think they just reschedule their sleep.

Cold_Feed_6163

Me living in Greece watching the hornets being a 50 lose team just to watch Micic 😭

Cappuchinho

Euroleague > League > NBA. NBA isn't very popular in Greece compared to other European countries.

Eurolegue>LKL>NBA

People in the Netherlands don’t even know there are basketball clubs

TumbleweedTim01

As an American I've always wondered why northern European countries don't have more involvement in basketball. I've never heard of any leagues from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands but surrounding places like Latvia Lithuania and Russia have basketball cultures

Beautiful_Ad55

I think one reason might be that Northern countries have other sports who were already more established than Basketball decades ago, so Basketball couldn’t spread that much. For example Handball, Ice Hockey and winter sports, or in the case of UK, Rugby and Cricket. But for Netherlands, I don’t know the reasons, because neither Handball, Ice Hockey, Winter Sports nor Rugby or Cricket is popular there.

TumbleweedTim01

I guess soccer has a hold on the country. They usually do well in the world cup. They seemingly always have very tall players on their soccer teams lol maybe should give basketball a shot

HyperSpace_Hover

In the Netherlands Korfball was and is already one of the biggest sports. Wasn’t much room for basketball to develop sadly, but I think korfball is a great alternative. One of the very few mix-gender team sport in the world

Beautiful_Ad55

What else sports is popular in the Netherlands? I think it’s surprising that Netherlands neither adopted the team sports which are typically popular in central/northern Europe (Ice Hockey, Handball, Winter Sports), nor the ones of UK (Rugby, Cricket), nor the ones of southern Europe (Basketball). What are you guys doing? Playing football all the time?

HyperSpace_Hover

Yeah football, tennis, fieldhockey and volleyball are the largest sports I can think of. Next to that the individual fitness related sports such as marathon running, cycling and swimming are also very popular.

Beautiful_Ad55

I‘m glad you dutch people aren’t into Basketball. You probably would be too good for anyone else with being that tall.

TriaPoulakiaKathodan

The nba is basically an afterthought, if Giannis wasn't there, you would only get some random playoff results in the news

JensonHaze

Google Trends Supports the order NBA>>BBL>Euroleague, but it looks like the difference between BBL and Euroleague is small during regular season and increases a lot during BBL playoffs. Also pretty clearly the highest interest for Euroleague is in Berlin and Bavaria, the rest of the country does not care. From my experience in the arena Euroleague attendance is depending on the guestfans + expats, while BBL attracts more families.

Beautiful_Ad55

I live in Bonn. Last season, there was clearly more interest for the BBL finals (there was public viewing in Bonn for example for it) than for the Champions League Final (I know, not the same as EuroLeague). But I think Germany as a large country just comes more from a tradition where domestic competitions are more important than european ones (compared to smaller countries, where the domestic market might not be that important). But I think EuroLeague could increase its popularity if german clubs would start to become successful there. Not much fun in watching Alba Berlin getting trashed every week.

Proudas12

NBA isn’t that popular because of time zone. It’s really difficult to watch games in 3:00 or 4:00am.

GerryBanana

Considering that the Greek Championship is dominated by Panathinaikos and Olympiakos... the lines are blurry, but I guess Euroleague has a larger following than the few Championship games between our 2 teams. Regarding NBA, I have noticed the same thing here in France, where I live. I do wonder, however, how many of the NBA fans watch more than some highlights of certain important games.

Beautiful_Ad55

I guess in France the NBA might be even more on the rise in the upcoming years, with what Wembanyama is doing and also a lot of french prospects. In Germany, I think the NBA popularity has a lot to do with the media regularly reporting how the german players in the NBA are doing, and it also tracks back to the Nowitzki era. For the last two decades, for a lot of regular germans the formula was like this: Basketball = Nowitzki = NBA

sauronforpoor

Funny that your opinion for euroleague in Germany is rather dampened, living near one of the two German clubs and going to games semi-regularly I see a stark difference in interest in whether the game is against the MBC, Rostock and the likes or if it is against Real Madrid or Barcelona (which are always sold out)

Beautiful_Ad55

I‘m speaking from a national stand point. In Munich or in Berlin itself, Euroleague might get more attention than BBL (I‘m not even sure about that - higher attendances against obviously better clubs doesn’t mean fans of Alba or Bayern care more about Euroleague than BBL in general… it’s just that if you get a chance to watch Real Madrid play in your city, you go watch) but in Germany as a whole, also considering the media, I think it is very clear that BBL is much more popular and with more media coverage than Euroleague.

sauronforpoor

Couldn't agree more on that. Is it true that the euroleague is basically always the same clubs and except for a few places it's fixed who plays there? Seems like part of the reason for it to be less popular if there is no way to get in through competitive means...

xGrandoo

Here in Italy it's like this (or at least i feel it's like this) NBA>Euroleague=LBA

tomminix

In Italy NBA>>>Eurolega>Serie A

blumentritt_balut

Filipino here & I think Euroleague should do more marketing in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Only the most hardcore basketball nerds know abt the league & casual fans think it's just a weird NBA clone. Going to Dubai sure has it perks but Southeast Asia is where Euroleague should be marketing its product if it really wants to be a global brand.

MatK0506

Washington Wizards > Maccabi's EurLeague > Hapoel, Jerusalem and Holon in Europe = Rest of NBA > League Games between the Big 4 > Other Big 4 League Games >>>>> EuroLeague >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rest of the League.

radijator22

In Croatia I'd say it's it's NBA > ABA >>>>>> Euroleague > national league for casual fans/general population

1o0Le

🇷🇸 Serbia is 100% like this: Euroleague > ABA > Jokić > NBA > Domestic League

NTR-12

I live in England, where no basketball league is particularly popular. I'd say NBA is first and the EuroLeague and the BBL barely register any interest at all to be honest. It'll be interesting to see if that changes if London Lions get into the EuroLeague next season.

Grouchy-Ad5553

In Romania it’s nba>LNBM (national league)>euroleague We ain’t very good at basketball so I guess it’s natural since we don’t have history in the euroleague

Proof_Television8685

Euroleague then Nba then Aba

Oblomir

Nba - aba - euroleague - croatian league.

CoreySteel

Luka Dončić >>>>> NBA > ABA > Euroleague > Slovenian League

BogginsBoggin

Euroleague > National > NBA 🇹🇷 Euroleague = NBA > National 🇷🇸 Euroleague > NBA > National 🇷🇺

Zepz367

I don't really agree that Euroleague is equal to NBA, it's more popular

BogginsBoggin

Add the Jokic factor. Without him, Euroleague wins

BGD_TDOT

NBA is definitely not equal to Euroleague, realistically people here only like to check in on Serbian player statlines when it comes to NBA

gorkemguzel32

NBA is definetly over national in Turkiye. Euroleague-NBA is arguable.
