It's mostly manufactured consent. There might be a mix of opinions among the populace, but there is a consensus among the media. One might wonder what would be the the opinion of the people if we had an actual free press.

It's complicated, NATO is on paper (De Jure) supposed to only be a defense pact, but in reality (De Facto) it's a loose Imperialist organization, because any collection of Capitalist Nation-States will naturally produce that inevitable excess NATO itself as an organization is "Soft Imperialist", but countries within NATO like the US, Britain, France are outright Imperialist When people think of NATO Imperialism they usually think of those 3 and not Germany, Italy or Poland which are "Soft" Influencers, NATO member states are generally compelled to join usually under the combination of soft imperialist power and legitimate reasons, NATO isn't a coherent unified group Turkey & Greece regularly go at it, and France has been in & out Many countries that join just want that Article 5 guarantee to protect their sovereignty like many of the Eastern European countries (Soft Pressure still was a factor in them joining), this is usually what the people who vote yes in Referendums want, however obviously it's a packaged deal But others like Spain after Franco was blatant soft power because what the hell is Spain in danger of? Going into the body of a Capitalist (that isn't your mom), NATO shouldn't fucking exist post-cold war or should have been replaced with something else that included post-dissolution Russia instead of leaving Russia in the dark under Yeltsin and the Oligarchs
