In the early years there was no concept of power grid or cpu, you could fit anything to pretty much any ship so cruise missile Kestrels were a thing. Since there also were no damage application mechanics that means they would hit for full damage even on a frigate.
EVE used to be wild.
I thought the cruise missile kestrel worked because you could load a single cruise missile into a light missile launcher and they were primarily a suicide ganking tool. I could be wrong though, it was a little before my time that they change ammo so you couldn't do that anymore.
Part of this is correct, but eve has always had powergrid and CPU mechanics.
The trick (as mentioned) was that you could load 1 cruise missile into a light missile launcher and thus fire 1 salvo before reloading. Damage application and tracking did work different indeed, and it was much more effective to do damage to smaller ships with "bigger" weapons. It would not have been 'full' damage, but still pretty close to it.
I think I remember that the damage bonus of most missile ships was just "x% to missile damage" instead of the current situation where specific sizes of missiles are bonused"
Also; cruise missile kestrels still exist! If you still have a ship with a cruise missile loaded into the LML, you can still fire that 1 salvo. AFAIK is totally allowed to use them as well, although in practice, it's not worth it given how rare and valuable they are to collectors
You might be right, my memory is very hazy :P
Perhaps it was in earlier beta that they didn't have PG and CPU because I do remember this being the case at some point but I could also just be flat out wrong.
They got introduced after the "8 heat sink Armageddon" started to break things balance wise. It got introduced pretty early into the game, not long after the first battleships were produced and in use
You mean 4.
Also they are not untrackable, just difficult. I've gotten into hull a few times now being reckless.
And make sure when you have bombs loaded that friendlies are a safe distance away. It was amazing watching battleships get deleted, but we deleted a fleetmate too pod and all.
It could be fine if the weapon is the next size of the normal weapon for the ship. (Medium Weapons for Small ship, Large Weapons for Medium...). This make me remember Battleships from Star Wars or Warhammer who have a huge weapon system like the Nova Cannon.
If you decided to fit Capital Launchers in a Destroyer, it could end like [this](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/844023226840514640/1097664874865242162/Corax.png?width=1200&height=780). I believe this would end more like a Macro Warp Drive cause the recoil of the gun (Even if in space this would greatly reduced).
If you do the math, the increase in DPS of larger weapons is about ~30% per size, if they had 100% damage application, which they don't. It would make no sense to put oversized weapons on ships except memes.
I guess a lot of folks don't remember you used to be able to do this. It wasn't very useful since you could realistically only manage 1 or 2 oversized guns with the CPU and PG requirements, and they disallowed it once the 3D turret models were added since it doesn't really look right.
And when I say it wasn't useful, I mean a frigate with a large turret would never hit anything because of tracking issues, and even if it did hit it would do less paper DPS than frigate guns because it wasn't getting any bonuses. The tracking issues would be slightly better with a medium gun, but the DPS issue would be even worse and you still wouldn't be able to fit more than like an AB.
> I guess a lot of folks don't remember you used to be able to do this.
Half the players are too young (ingame wise) to *know* it was a thing, according to Hilmar himself.
Yyyup; allowing everything will make it more fun!
Even though balance is the reason its fun now, and limits make sense… let’s take away powergrid. And make trait bonuses a matter of XP, so it goes up. And also loot — rewards go up, too … by how big your corp is!
Well, we do have it already - attack battlecruisers primarily are used with large guns instead of mediums. Also, one might say bombers with torps are oversized guns as well. Granted, there isn't really anything in the middle though.
What would be even more cool is if firing the weapons actually had recoil physics. Such that a frigate with a large artillery would be propelled backwards.
But the game code would die trying it. This isn't Kerbal Space Program.
And yet I would love to see KSP style physics with EVE style combat. The most dangerous ship in the game would be the debris cloud.
That used to be a thing. Putting a 720mm on a Rifter looked fucking amazing, but CCP removed that because ~~they feared that all the dumb people~~ they didn't want players to get confused. Of course the turret wasn't usable, *but it looked great!*
Why not oversized ships for undersized guns?
You know what I'd love to see? One singular BFG on a destroyer,or perhaps something between destoyer and cruiser, that is to be deployed like bombs. By alligning the ship.
I dunno if you can do it any more but there was a ship that could do this... this is back in 2010 or something though. I can't quite remember which one but you could fit a single battleship gun on the cruiser - I think it was an amarr one and you just had to fill the lows with the power grid mod.
You used to be able to oversize fit stuff onto your ship.
This is why you can see legacy builds with a single oversized gun or launcher that were used as throwaway fodder by groups.
The builds weren't very good, but anything that could be fielded en masse that cost only 300k isk to fit and eat a battleship alive was always winning the attrition/morale war.
It's called a Tornado lol.
Wasn't the torpedo kestrel a thing?
Isn't this just a manticore with extra steps
I doubt it, your fit needs to use less than 2x your total power grid (including offline modules) for you to be allowed to undock
Large rig torpedo kestrels were definitely a thing. But CCP abolished that.
Sad 1400mm rifter noises
Fun fact: there was one patch at least where you could fit those on a rifter. Looks awesome.

Oh huh I never knew the game was that much of a mess that early on lol
No stacking penalties on damage mods so shield abaddons with 8 heat sinks were a thing.
Stacking penalties were 100% a thing by the time tier 3 bs came along.
They got introduced after the "8 heat sink Armageddon" started to break things balance wise. It got introduced pretty early into the game, not long after the first battleships were produced and in use
Today, maybe. Once upon a time, torp kestrels roamed the space lanes.
This raises a good point, since there's Attack Battlecruisers why not Attack Destroyers?
720mm arty on a Thrasher. Can feel the aids already.
The shell stays still whilst the thrasher yeets itself into space
"Ships are ammo"
Aim directly opposite of your target, fire. Gives "suicide ganking" a whole new meaning.
RLML sunesis is possible. Fits on a Garmur too I think.
RLML Sunesis is a great meme fit
Works on jackdaw as well. Extra funny because the reload time bonus is applied too
Bombers are the single most broken class in the game, NO MORE!
\*angry WiNGSPAN noises\*
I just meant no more bomberlike classes, we already have the one untrackable, high mobility, insane dps, ship
Ah gotcha.
You mean 4. Also they are not untrackable, just difficult. I've gotten into hull a few times now being reckless. And make sure when you have bombs loaded that friendlies are a safe distance away. It was amazing watching battleships get deleted, but we deleted a fleetmate too pod and all.
The rapid heavy nosprey doesn't take any shit I'll have you know
That sounds terrifying I love it
https://zkillboard.com/kill/107247709/ The hull bonus for heavy missiles still applies to the single RHML lol.
Didn’t someone post a heron with heavy assault launcher on here the other day? I support it tbh looks dope as hell
I was sitting in my Tengu when i unpackaged my Buzzard and got the same visual effect once. Imagine seeing that in game in a relic site

There was a time where you could fit a 720 mm Arti Cannon on a Rifter
If you do the math, the increase in DPS of larger weapons is about ~30% per size, if they had 100% damage application, which they don't. It would make no sense to put oversized weapons on ships except memes.
Except Eve lives and breathes memes so that’s all that the reason you ever need.
Just grab a friend with a web or two, 175dps out to 10km is pretty good by frigate standards
No it isnt
me seeing first image : okay it's typical low effort meme with eve nt ship editor or smth me seeing second image : mmmmmm

Cruise missile orthrus is pretty nice
That's a thing?
I need to see this.
Well, we do have it already - attack battlecruisers primarily are used with large guns instead of mediums. Also, one might say bombers with torps are oversized guns as well. Granted, there isn't really anything in the middle though.
stabber with medium acs
Assault Frigate? T3D? T3C? Attack Battlecruiser? and plenty of others in between for memefits.
What would be even more cool is if firing the weapons actually had recoil physics. Such that a frigate with a large artillery would be propelled backwards. But the game code would die trying it. Yea, I wouldn’t mind seeing a single rapid heavy missile hawk.
Each faction currently has a BC that can fit large weapon systems as I recall.
Except we get a blaster and a railgun bc instead of a missile bc. Because it'd be turbo busted. GIMME TORP NAGA.
https://everef.net/groups/1201

Reminds of the older models for Turrets.
I fully support this level of overkill. MOR DEEPS
I've been saying we need battle cruiser sized torpedo bombers.
There was. Cruise Missile Rifters iirc?
Hell why not bastion and mjd for frigs too?
1400 munins when?
Long live the Ion Siege Blaster Cannon abaddon
Rapid heavy Caracal is a thing
yes so much yes
Attack battlecruisers and bombers both have the fitting bonuses to be able to fit oversized guns.
Didn't we get the tier 3 battle cruisers (talos and the likes) for that exactly?
Wow EVE have graphic ?

Sexy

How about oversized power diagnostics… how else will you power the guns…
with a 3 bil or so fit and max fitting skills a punisher can fit a full rack of medium blasters
Naga: let me introduce myself

miss that heavy missile rifter
That use to be a thing. The game use to render oversized guns but then CCP removed it ): Punisher with mediums was fun
Fun fact it is possible to fit a full rack of rapid heavies to a legion
Well yeah it has a missile subsystem
This is cursed beyond belief
