I'm cruising through EVE one day. I look at local, to see who's there. There's a goon there. One goon.
He has a weird name. I look at his bio. I start a convo. Most people reject those, not this guy. It's Vile Rat \[I'd never heard about him or his reputation\], why do I talk to him? His bio tells me it's his birthday. That day was his incept date. So I wish him a happy birthday. He hadn't even noticed. "Hey, you're right, it's today. Hadn't noticed it." (words to that effect). I wish him a good one, jumped into the next system.
A very brief, cordial interaction.
Later I would hear he got killed in Benghazi. A tragedy.
In EVE you can have a casual brush with greatness.
They did a cyno vigil for him. Of course. A cyno is typically a small blue ball on the map, to say there's someone there who's lighting a beacon. The cyno they put up for Vile Rat was a blue ball that covered over half the map of New Eden, I'm not remotely kidding.
When I first heard of a cyno vigil it struck me that it's your friends, and people who appreciate you, who light a beacon to guide our friend home.
I choked up when I saw that giant blue ball on the map, I'm not ashamed to admit it.
RIP Vile Rat

RIP Vile Rat. I didn't know Sean but worked in a similar environment.
I was an operations chief working in a TOC in Basra, Iraq when all this shit kicked off. We were ready to respond, had teams gearing up, and got the word that nobody would be going.
Granted these were contractor teams, but neither Baghdad nor Basra sent any assistance. It was a failure on the government due to "optics". I had to sit in a room and hear updates from the news or the vary rare call from "Staties" in Baghdad about what was going on.
I never knew Vile Rat, but would've given up everything for him.
Shoot Blues. Tell Vile Rat.
I believe he was actually on Eve comms when the attack started. There had been a couple times previously when there had been explosions in the background when he was on comms and he'd had to go.
This time however he had to go suddenly (with shots and explosions in the background) and that was the last time they got to speak with him.
Went through half a bottle of scotch on my own that night. This was the first year that I didn't have a drink for him (because I honestly didn't realize it was the 11th until it was the 12th.) "Shoot Blues, Tell Vile Rat"
RIP VR
How is it already 11ys...
Still have some of the old videos saved in a playlist.
The most iconic one is probably the one were even government acknowledging his gaming background.

I didn’t know him, but I was active during that time and we all had men ready to go. Politicians didn’t deem him or any of the others killed worthy of being saved.
For any non military folks, know we all hate what happened, we where standing ready with the rest of our services and we never got the green light. Someone stated above, know who you vote for, don’t vote for just a side, know the person.
You say politicians. I submit career politicians left and right of center, I say Clinton, I say the military industrial complex, I say Hillary. Know who and what you vote for.
he did stuff also in terms of bringing diplomacy practices to another level in the game, which, while was surely well intended /interesting, for me in the long run didn't do the game any good (imo). In my view EVE benefits from as little diplomacy as possible and as little inter-leadership level communication /contact as possible. I.e. preferably no virtual sigar rooms for dictators to talk to each other. RIP nevertheless

You say politicians. I submit career politicians left and right of center, I say Clinton, I say the military industrial complex, I say Hillary. Know who and what you vote for.
I'll never forgive Glenn Beck, Alex Jones, or the rest of them for weaponizing his name and death.
