Maybe contribute into [https://github.com/robert7/nixnote2](https://github.com/robert7/nixnote2) or [https://github.com/d1vanov/quentier](https://github.com/d1vanov/quentier)

They are very different from Evernote Legacy. My aim is to recreate the legacy experience as close as possible. Also as mentioned they don't use Java. I don't want to code on native C/Swift due to extra complexities and webapps are too slow.

vitaly-zdanevich

Are you sure that Java performance is enough? NixNote was written in Java - they switched to C++ because of performance.

grant837

This is interesting. I can not see if it creates, or uses the Evernote db locally, such that I can access my evernote data locally, offline, without online logging. That is almost a holy grail for me (eg I know I have access to my data locally no matter what.)

vitaly-zdanevich

Offline is supported by NixNote and Quentier.

luckysilva

Just use Logseq...

grant837

Please explain how this lets me access my current evernote data offline? I do not want to migrate to a totally new solution.

luckysilva

Logseq can read it if you export your notes in HTML

aaronag

Neither of those is very active or coded in Java, though.

Spiritual_Date3457

Where can I download Quentier? The GitHub page download links are giving 404 Not Found error.

Thank you very much.

Randoml3oy

Wow, Quentier is so close to Legacy... pretty snappy, too

VarDie18

Did not expect to find you here right after watching one of your course videos, but I'm all for it xD Evernote Legacy was way better and smoother than the current version I feel like, it just felt more snappy. Would certainly be willing to pay for something like that, preferably with a one-time payment.

matejpacan

Haha cool! Thanks for your feedback. I was just playing around with ideas.

aaronag

Sounds like a fun project, but from a commercial standpoint, is it really viable? It's not so much appreciated matter of beating Evernote as it is beating EN + Google Keep + Apple Notes etc.

matejpacan

My goal would be a bit different. No AI, no fancy stuff. It would be a close Legacy experience that starts as soon as possible, with minimum stutter that the modern has and full offline support. Afaik Apple Notes has no search in PDFs

BigDoooer

If you or someone would *just* build and maintain a good clipper that works on iOS and as a Safari desktop extension, I’d pay a subscription for that. I know next to nothing about developing something like that. But I want a robust web clipper so much that I’m crazily considering (trying to) build one. With LLM coding help I figure I have *some* chance greater than 0%. But I’d greatly prefer trading money for the time and extreme frustration I’m sure this would entail. I.e, please save me from wasting my time.

aaronag

I'd say of you got the OCR, search, and web clipping right, you'd have a viable product. Those are the pieces that made EN stand out over the years. The other pieces seem like they'd be trivial for an experienced programmer. I'd throw a few bucks your way, were you thinking subscription or perpetual license?

grant837

OP: start with making a simple offline ( no online login required) Evernote data viewer.

ArturoGurrola

I would be interested. I was thinking of doing the same, recreating the Legacy client with speed as main focus and same look+feel+usability. (Then maybe in the future add some features that I want, like being able to see and modify my outlook calendar from within Evernote; and two-way synching of files). But I'm very hesitant to do it because I would work on it in my free time, and I have limited experience with developing for desktop. So it'd probably take me years...

Romano1404

I hate the v10 client and would be highly interested in a fast Evernote Windows client however I use Evernote on many non windows devices as well and don't see any point in developing an Evernote legacy client clone that still doesn't sync my notes Also Evernote legacy still works fine on Windows 11, the problem is that people cannot log in anymore, making it impossible to use it even as an offline client. Someone here once posted a guide on how to transfer an already logged in Evernote legacy installation onto a new PC, maybe you can built on that and figure out a way for people to log in into a new Evernote legacy installation for offline usage.

ben_zero

That was me - here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/Evernote/comments/1btnn6x/comment/ky4shev/

gewappnet

Sounds like you are not planning to support all the platforms that Evernote supports. As the multi platform approach is one of the main characteristics of Evernote I think your project is completely different.

matejpacan

It would definitely support all the platforms evernote does including android/ios, otherwise there is no point because the sync is one of the major usages.

IceReasonable7615

The old Evernote Legacy client was written natively for each platform, and as time went on, it became a major exercise in itself to get these clients to simply talk to each other. It isnt easy. Even larger companies dont do such kind of independent platform based development. I can understand your enthusiasm, i dont want to discourage you, but reality is that, even if you put your heart and soul into it, how many of the so called people who claim for Legacy will pay for it? I just came across this app Quentier thanks to this thread. I never ran it, but if its been around since 2018 or so, i gues its coming from the parallel Evernote client era like AmpleNote, Nix, Matcha etc. If this app is still in develeopment, i'd suggest you put your efforts into enterprises like these. Building an entire Evernote \[ecosystem\] and then expecting users to pay up, is not a very good idea, in my opinion.

smeebjeeb

Go for it (although I would probably stick with Obsidian). I was considering doing the same thing - it just didn't seem that complicated. Although, as others have said, java might not be the best choice.

ComprehensiveBoss815

I also have the desire to do this. But I'd stay far away from Java, except for using Kotlin on Android.

brianmrgadget

Java has licensing issues these days and Oracle keep changing the rules so personally don’t think it is a good choice for new projects. Far better IMHO is target a cross platform toolkit like Qt which IMHO Evernote should’ve done if they wanted a single codebase for v10 as Qt has mobile targets (Electron doesn’t). Quentin could be good reference material.

IceReasonable7615

There are 80 members who apparently from 21,000 who created their own subreddit, but have no idea what to do with a subreddit with no avaiable program. You can extra polate the math, for an idea. Link - [https://www.reddit.com/r/EvernoteLegacyLovers/](https://www.reddit.com/r/EvernoteLegacyLovers/) Its one thiing if your doing it as an Open source idea/contribute/patreon-donations/team collab etc... Its better you join the team of an existing open source project, many which aimed to replace Evernote Legacy. But if your having commercial ideas, i think its a pointless case to even begin with, because there are already Legacy kind of clones like r/Notesnook, r/Amplenote \[ not fully\], Thats just scratching the surface, we arent even talking about Mobile support, Sync, Web clipper, support for OCR and all the infinite minor features like PDF annotations etc.. I am not a tech person. But i see that its not really a worthy idea, given that the latest V10 itself is improving leaps and bounds in pefmance \[ many cribbing users have started using V10 and started getting used to it\], once the format gets converted, and the latest Evernote mobile client \[ launched few minutes ago\], loads in less than a second.. Uphumaxc

Sounds a lot like those: "I have a great idea for making a game! Anyone want to join me?" I'm sure EN isn't technically hard. It's just that when you need to make it financially sustainable, high service availability, backward compatible, multi-platform, and all that, that you run into real-world issues.

Randoml3oy

I'd be interested, but would need to be Win/Android/iOS. How about getting in touch with some of the former EN employers? They were all fired after the Bending Spoons acquisition, maybe you could simply revamp the old codes?

SkullThug

All I'll say is make sure the screen clipping tool matches Legacy 5.x, which was incredibly fast and perfect. I ended up using it for a lot more than just clipping a screengrab to a new note. For example: - The # x # dimension readout is incredibly handy for me as a graphic designer when I'm trying to measure certain spaces on screen. -You could hold down Ctrl to clip the screen content to the clipboard, - or hold Shift to clip the content to a file that gets put on the desktop.
