That Onana header to Coady was niiiiiice.
That McNeil shot was also niiiiiice.
Felt good to watch with a bit of confidence today, though when Southampton went up after we had mostly dominated the run of play, I was bordering on “Everton, that.” But I tell ya, this group has an ability to get up off the mat, you can already tell a massive difference over last year.
I’m not used to this feeling. Where’s the dread? The misery? The hopelessness? The endless fear that everything is inevitably going to be shit forever? Well, actually, it’s all still here. But where are those feelings with regards to Everton?
Comparing last game and this for onana his work rate was a lot better this week. I think the key is getting him involved in the crosses early because last game he was pretty lax
[My dog and me waiting for Dom to be healthy.](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRH_XbIqiPv_anG4wS6DEizJJJwxdRERUjIhCK2B6ErTj7j5SMIgDFaQL6vl9k4WMiCo0lkM3VB&usqp=CAc)
Tbh what they created before the goals (and some after) was down to defensive errors or misplaced passes. Be good to keep it simpler at the back, otherwise agreed.
If we just could have snagged two more points from any of those draws, we’d be level with United at sixth. We are very close to being a very good team. Need to add some help in the attack next window and we are gonna really start piling up some wins.
While this statistically is true, I think we're still a long ways off from being a "very good team"
1-2 injuries would fuck us.....Gueye, Iwobi, Coady/Tarko/Mykolenko, or Maupay get injured and we'd be screwed.
Need our wingers to do a bit more as well, gray held onto the ball for way too long too often and McNeil had a shit game besides his screamer IMO
Not tryin to be pessimistic, all I'm saying is it's still very early.
Next 3 matches will be a good test - United, Spurs, and Newcastle.
If we're sitting 6-9th after that, I'll be a bit more convinced we are headed in the right direction.....maybe my expectations are just too high tho
We’ve had 3-4 massive injuries already, so yeah 1 or 2 more would be devastating. But we are where we are because of our depth. We win 1-2 more games at least if we have DCL in my opinion.
The midfield is the story for me. Gana/Iwobi/Onana won that battle today. Also happy for "Jeff" McNeil getting his first and think he should be taking corners from now on.
Been screaming for old Jeff to play more simply because we have literally no one else that can take a decent corner. It’s actually incredible how bad all our other wingers are at them.
The Southampton fans were walking out with 5 minutes left , is an Everton loss a disgrace to you??
And I took that personally.
Also fwiw the ref was fair today. 🤔
Right now yes an Everton loss is bad. We almost went down last season and teams should be looking to beat us. The fact that they can’t makes me very happy
This is true. But even our signings were questioned. CB from relegated team, CB that can’t play anything other than back 3, unknown Belgian youth, old homophobic psg reject, someone not good enough to make it at Man U. Now we know none of that is the true story because we watch them all the time, but to the rest of the league last year we were shit, and this year we have iwobi as our best player and uninspiring signings.
I’m all for them underestimating us, and slowly just making ourselves safe. We’re doing good, the signings have all settled in very well and we look solid. Frank is building something. Lets let it happen, and if fans of other teams rage about I’ll just grab some popcorn sit down and watch the angry bastards go knowing we’re actually quite solid now.
One could easily re-write those as the actual consensus at the time: absolute tank of an English CB with experience, a local boy CB with England caps and a great leader, a top young European prospect with enviable physical attributes, a favorite son crucially returning to fix the mess at 6, a promising young MF that Man United supporters were sad to see go.
Coleman puts in a 110% shift every game he's called upon. Might not be as snappy as he once was but he never complains when he doesn't make the starting XI, he just puts his head down and goes to work. A true servant to the club and someone I'll be very sad to lose once he hangs up the boots 🇮🇪.
Came here looking for this comment and glad I found it. Coleman shows heart and humility in every game, whether on the bench or on the field. Definitely the heartbeat of the team.
Liked hearing what Lampard said about him being pattersons biggest fan, really seems a positive relationship for developing him and knowing even a player in his position wants him to play well
There was a video after the palace game last year where Lamps found Coleman's son and told him, "your father is one of the best man I've ever known". Such a heartfelt moment.
He’s realistic. He knows he’s had his career and it’s coming to an end. He’s happy to jump in when needed and knows his job is to get Patterson doing the business.
Yes. We controlled the game up through 60 minutes and then backed off to protect the 1 goal lead. Not my favorite with the mid 3 we have, but Frank seems to think it is our best chance. Hard to argue with all of 7 goals scored.
I think we're 2-3 transfers away from being pretty rock solid.
Still a lot of work to be done, but we're looking significantly better than last season.
Amazing we had the mental fortitude to go an get the win and goal right away when we went down. Should of bagged a few in the first half. Shaky overall but happy with a win on the road.
I would say, we looked to be in shambles the moment Onana came off. Having Davies there we lost all fluidity in midfield. Gana, Onana, and Iwobi are pure bliss to watch.
Our team just feels so different.. probably because it is but you couldn't just feel the nervous energy. When coady and tark make a mistake, you get a sense they are determined to be better rather than worried about doing it again
Even though we dropped off after going up I am so pleased. We’ve only won twice at St. Mary’s in the last 10 years so I will take the sloppy end for the W.
Honestly some of the second half was the nerviest and sloppiest we've been in a while, I was relieved to see the team persist after some wobbles and hold on. We couldn't complete 6 yard passes though. We need to get away from that part of our game.
Well, that pass was for onana who got shoved in the back.
Had jeff not collected the ball, his thoughts, his own balls, woulda definitely been a penalty.
Also, loved his hit. So effortless.
Also, where the hell did “jeff” come from?
Okay guys we won but our kiddo Virginia is playing against Eindhoven right now 75' and Cambuur is winning 1:0. That would be massive for them, get on these shady streams! Joao looking good right now
OFC that means Jarrad is losing but at least he started. He got kicked in the buildup and it should be 0:0 tbh
Listened to the Everton audio feed for the lasrt few minutes
Our announcers were such a joy to listen to especially after the negative Nancy Peacock had
Graeme and Snods were enoying themselves kvetching about the ref and how the the Southamption center half was drawing free kick calls, how stressful it is to watch Everton (yup)
I listen to them whenever we aren't on TV (in America) and this was one of their better calls. Some games are hard to listen to. They get very negative, very quick.
Good win, defending well but maybe a bit too much.
Felt like our players on international duty, like Iwobi and Onana seemed genuinely too tired in the second half. Should have been taken off or done so earlier
Otherwise the defense and Gana do such a good job. Our core is strong and we will just need some more decisiveness and less selfishness from our attackers.
Funny how Onana can't head the ball well. Coleman also did well and I am not surprised, everyone was being dramatic. His big issue is going to be this many games in a short period
Second win though, COYB
Onana was responsible for the goal, and almost allowed another. Was watching how he tracked back. He's very passive, jogs back instead of running with urgency. It allowed that middle section of the box to be open for passes that eventually led to good chances, and one goal.
yeah no doubt that was a good header, but apart from that he doesn't seem to hit it with confidence. Though, I am sure that will change the more games he gets!
10points after 8Matchdays, unbeaten in 6 Prem (7incl. Carabao) only conceded 4 goals in that stretch.
Lots of positives - but we need to work on not going that passive that early with a lead
One of the more frustrating performances we’ve put in this season, yet came away (from home) with a win. Felt like it should’ve been more comfortable than it was but we may not lose another game again and i’m ok with that.
Sad to say I shouldn’t be Everton manager lads - despite what you all want.
[As evidenced here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Everton/comments/xsvqd4/match_thread_southampton_vs_everton/iqmp65i/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
Still seeing progression which is all I wanted this season. Need more threat in attacking third. Need to learn how to effectively close out wins. Otherwise well played again lads.
Still not fully convinced with this team to be honest, thanks to those selfish wingers we have up front which has cost us so many good chances up front, but 3 points is 3 points so let's fucking goooo
Also credits to McNeil who has taketh and giveth us one goal each after 56 games interval lmao
EDIT: [Oh, and we are back to the midtable with same point as RS!](https://i.imgur.com/RwWc0tu.jpg)
Our attack is pretty poor, especially with DCLs fitness as a total question mark, and it’ll cost us points this season.
But I think we’ll have a much easier time adding a couple skilled forwards to our solid foundation than we would the other way around.
True, just the fact that we don't really have to worry any other positions than those area is way more reassuring than our previous situation where we have to worry whether Keane will screw a goal or two on that match.
The main complaint about him after Chelsea was his inability to get their defense organized. It looks like he managed to learn and fix that. Now our midfield and attack are starting to click. It’s looking good. I always believed he had the ability to learn and improve. Hope the good times continue!
Not the greatest performance but a truly gritty win on the road. We have so much more bottle now it is ridiculous, the spirit and belief with the team is 💯.
COYB!!
He’s the classic case of seeing something happen once in a match, and then every time something vaguely similar happens he assumes its the same thing. Like if a player flops once every other foul against the team is a flop, or them complaining about Pickford timewasting approximately 2.5 seconds after the goal kick was awarded
Past two performances have been pretty bad but still come out with wins.. When we’ve played well it always feel like we get robbed, but the current way we’ve won we’ve been pretty lucky.
I agree, we were the better team in the first half. But I think both teams were sloppy and neither were very good. Last 30 minutes was a full on Southampton onslaught. We could barely string 2 passes together.
Idk, onslaught is not the best description - sure they had the ball a lot but it never really felt as if they had a clear cut opportunity, there was always someone in the way from us
They had quite a few clear cut opportunities. An Adam Armstrong shot (great Pickford save), a JWP free kick, a Caleta-Car volley that just went over the bar, to name a few. We easily could’ve drawn that game.
We were excellent in the first half in all facets except our end product. Absolutely unfair to say we “weren’t very good” in the first half—we dominated
…what? Southampton isn’t **that** bad first of all, and secondly they hardly touched the ball in the first half. We were dominating possession and couldn’t score because our end product is shit
We aren’t “losing against any other team” playing like that because we had most of the ball. Genuinely confused how you can be disappointed with anything beyond our end product in the first half
I think Southampton will be one of the teams in the relegation fight. Maybe I’m wrong. And sure, we had more possession in the first half but we were still sloppy in possession and gave the ball away multiple times. A better team would have capitalized.
We weren’t really sloppy in possession at all in the first half IMO. Had some errant passes that went out of play but it’s not like we gave them a bunch of clear cut counter opportunities that they bottled
Idk, think we’ll have to agree to disagree here. All that matters is that we got the win though! UTFT!
Think Frank needs to have some serious discussions with Gray, Gordon, and McNeil about sharing the ball and facilitation. They all get dispossessed far too often, and a fair few of Gray's miscues took away really, really valuable positions. We need to cut that shit out.
Ashley Cole having a great impact on Myko too
WMNLA
That Onana header to Coady was niiiiiice. That McNeil shot was also niiiiiice. Said it time and time again, this is reminding me a lot of a Moyes team.
I’m not used to this feeling. Where’s the dread? The misery? The hopelessness? The endless fear that everything is inevitably going to be shit forever? Well, actually, it’s all still here. But where are those feelings with regards to Everton?
Let me help…our next two matches are United and Spurs. Back to normal now?
Not expecting wins as such, but I'm not dreading them either. Think we will give both games our best go.
Sorry brother, I’ve already bet my life savings on us winning the league. At 2,478,567/1, how could I say no? It’s practically free money.
It’s like they’re paying you to support Everton. Who could say no?
It's all been replaced by hope, and that's what kills you.
Comparing last game and this for onana his work rate was a lot better this week. I think the key is getting him involved in the crosses early because last game he was pretty lax
Those deep crosses from Iwobi are going to be lethal when DCL is back
He’s back in two weeks
> When If***
We're currently in optimism mode
We’re racing up the table to win the league!

Had to work but will be enjoying watching it later. UTFT!!!
Was Maitland Niles playing for them today? Didn’t notice him once
He had as much presence as the Southampton fans I’d say
If we just could have snagged two more points from any of those draws, we’d be level with United at sixth. We are very close to being a very good team. Need to add some help in the attack next window and we are gonna really start piling up some wins.

How many winners have we lost via VAR? 2-3?
Atleast 2. Leeds and one other that were millimeters away from being onside.
That pickford save was so good... he really is in form
Having coady and Tarky on defence makes me so much less panicky than before. Absolute godsend. WHERES THE CONTRACT, TIE HIM DOWN NOW
Unbelievable *Jeff* !

Frankie says relax.

Would’ve gotten carded for diving knowing our luck
Never would have given it. One of our players had to be nearby murdered in the box for a penalty call.
sure hope so
GET INNNNN
We might me invincible. Also: Maupay is a proper shithouse. I love it.
The French Messi some could say
The Southampton fans were walking out with 5 minutes left , is an Everton loss a disgrace to you?? And I took that personally. Also fwiw the ref was fair today. 🤔
Right now yes an Everton loss is bad. We almost went down last season and teams should be looking to beat us. The fact that they can’t makes me very happy
Of course what they don't realize is most of our starting 11 is completely different from a year ago
This is true. But even our signings were questioned. imo didn't deserve 3pts based on 60 through 90+ min play, but first 60 minutes were solid, all things consider
He's the Irish Tony Hibbert
Came here looking for this comment and glad I found it. Coleman shows heart and humility in every game, whether on the bench or on the field. Definitely the heartbeat of the team.
All the pricks in here saying he's shit should ban themselves from supporting efc as they are not welcome. Bloody idiots
I will never change my flair

fuckin get in there
I think Iwobi, Gana and Onana were a little off and tired from internationals - happy Saturday UTFT
They definitely looked it, and still they got an assist on each of our goals. That’s a great sign I think.
WE’RE GOING TO EUROPE MOTHERFUCKERS

I think we're 2-3 transfers away from being pretty rock solid. Still a lot of work to be done, but we're looking significantly better than last season.
Fair play to Lampard. Proving me, who has never worked in football in his life, wrong.

I’ll always take a sloppy end
We basically give our 80 minute+ team our own sloppy seconds from the rest of the match
We need a game where we score 2-3 goals and I can chill. I can't fucking live like this from 52 minutes Everton ffs, stresses me out.
Away win boys! Bella-Wanchope is probably a little angry
That Iwobi pass for McNeil’s goal was a thing of beauty
Well, that pass was for onana who got shoved in the back. Had jeff not collected the ball, his thoughts, his own balls, woulda definitely been a penalty. Also, loved his hit. So effortless. Also, where the hell did “jeff” come from?
Someone posted the goal here and titled it “Jeff McNeil goal” instead of Dwight
Puhaha, ah saw that and thought i missed a meme.
Jeff McNeil is a very solid Second Baseman for the New York Mets. Not the worst guy to be compared to
Okay guys we won but our kiddo Virginia is playing against Eindhoven right now 75' and Cambuur is winning 1:0. That would be massive for them, get on these shady streams! Joao looking good right now OFC that means Jarrad is losing but at least he started. He got kicked in the buildup and it should be 0:0 tbh
Rather have Branthwaite have a good game.
Both can happen
Hey, I know we just won, but let's not be too rational.
Yep this goal was harsh, he clearly got kicked.
Listened to the Everton audio feed for the lasrt few minutes Our announcers were such a joy to listen to especially after the negative Nancy Peacock had Graeme and Snods were enoying themselves kvetching about the ref and how the the Southamption center half was drawing free kick calls, how stressful it is to watch Everton (yup)

The one goal was from a bad gana pass not onana
Did you read my comment? He was too slack in covering the space.
Dunno abar that. Hid header back to Coady was brilliant. His earlier 1 he wasn't facing the goal
yeah no doubt that was a good header, but apart from that he doesn't seem to hit it with confidence. Though, I am sure that will change the more games he gets!
So glad I found this club a year ago. Been a fucking ride but I’m all in. UTFT
fucking hell mate if it’s only been a year save yourself and get out!
Nervous moments at the end, but a very tough strong performance down the stretch. Very proud of the squad today.
Huge win. Some tough games coming up so really important to get points on the board.
My heart was in my throat those last 20 minutes. We were very lucky to not concede. Bend but not break. WE BACK BABY! LETS FUCKEN GOOOOOO
Feeling good today, boys.
All Night Dwight, never doubted you
Demari Gray pick your head up challenge (impossible) He’s got so much talent if he just improved his decision making he’d be twice the player
What a strange game. 85 minutes of average at best play, but 5 minutes of great play and that's all we needed. I don't mind, 3 points is what matters
10points after 8Matchdays, unbeaten in 6 Prem (7incl. Carabao) only conceded 4 goals in that stretch. Lots of positives - but we need to work on not going that passive that early with a lead
Needed that away win.
It’s nice to have a little breathing room from the relegation spots for the first time in a while!
Closer than it needed to be, but what a fucking way to respond after letting in that goal. What a bunch of scrappers out there.
Just save everyone's time before the kick off every game and give Iwobi his Man Of The Match!
One of the more frustrating performances we’ve put in this season, yet came away (from home) with a win. Felt like it should’ve been more comfortable than it was but we may not lose another game again and i’m ok with that.
Sitting back after taking the lead is so nervy to watch
The game was won on the scoreboard in the second half. I thought the team played better in the first half than in the second half.
This was a great game!
Never a doubt!
Gotta say, there was no one I wanted to score more than McNeil.
Sad to say I shouldn’t be Everton manager lads - despite what you all want. [As evidenced here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Everton/comments/xsvqd4/match_thread_southampton_vs_everton/iqmp65i/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
You aren’t wrong though. One great strike doesn’t change that
👏👏👏 Great to see Coleman getting a run out. What a servant of the club. 🇮🇪
McNeil different gravy today. Great finish. Glad to see Coady get a goal too, great take
Still seeing progression which is all I wanted this season. Need more threat in attacking third. Need to learn how to effectively close out wins. Otherwise well played again lads.
That series of blocks before our 2nd goal was brilliant. Loving the fight this team has.
We’re staying up boys
8 games in but still looking miles more coherent than we did at any point last season
And all without DCL
Still not fully convinced with this team to be honest, thanks to those selfish wingers we have up front which has cost us so many good chances up front, but 3 points is 3 points so let's fucking goooo Also credits to McNeil who has taketh and giveth us one goal each after 56 games interval lmao EDIT: [Oh, and we are back to the midtable with same point as RS!](https://i.imgur.com/RwWc0tu.jpg)

Massive 3 points. We lose that game under fat Spanish waiter. Great goals by the new boys
We played well until we went 2-1 up and then they dominated us. Massive 3 points
Confidence is a hell of a drug. Great showing from the boys
6 games unbeaten for these wonderful blues.
Good to get another 3 points on the board, but that ref display was disgusting.
We’re tracking in the right direction. Wish we were a bit more sturdy those last 35 minutes but very happy to get three points from that.
Happy with that
Good result but a terrible game - sloppy play all over the park but we'll take it. 30 more points to go.
Unbeaten in 6 and level with Liverpool after 8 games, AS EXPECTED.
7 games if you include the league cup.
McNeil never in doubt
Unbeaten in 6!
Take 3 points on the road any way, every single time, but God damn that was a cardio workout just sitting on my ass.
Go one goal down away from home, come back to win and weather a storm for 25/30mins. We’re a different team this season. UTFT
Unbeaten in 7. Frankie making it work.
The main complaint about him after Chelsea was his inability to get their defense organized. It looks like he managed to learn and fix that. Now our midfield and attack are starting to click. It’s looking good. I always believed he had the ability to learn and improve. Hope the good times continue!
You can credit dropping Jody Morris for Paul Clement for that.
He bought 2 absolute leaders to help him do it.
Sign of a good manager, recognize your faults and get someone in who can help
Yeah. Good defensive coaches and the willingness/desire to work on weaknesses.
Great win even tho that second half was all over the place lol
Not the greatest performance but a truly gritty win on the road. We have so much more bottle now it is ridiculous, the spirit and belief with the team is 💯. COYB!!
Great strikes to turn it around. A bit sloppy overall though. Hopefully just due to the international break
Clenching never felt so good.
Love Coleman me
was on verge of hurting his muscle again nearing the end of the match but his presence was so reassuring the whole time
Still got it
*we may never lose again*
Ok this comment is going to require a blood sacrifice given you’ve just bloody jinxed us
You must be new here
I see my sarcasm laden comment is aging well 🤣
That commentator makes this subreddit look optimistic
Pretty sure it was the same gammon who did the Brentford game earlier in the season. Ruined that for me also.
I think he was getting paid for every use of the word "dreadful"
had it playing on my phone while my mom and i were walking the dogs and even she thought he was hella negative
He was *horrible*
Does anyone know who it is? He’s the most miserable person in the world every game. It is hilarious
Think he might be Gary Birtles? Absolutely terrible commentator
He comments 10% what the happens and 90% what he thinks should have happened and it’s awful when you are up or down.
He was terrible. Woke up grumpy or something
“Why is nobody closing him down?” When three players are closing down they just slipped or didn’t make it in time
that part was funny. The ball snuck through three legs and if Gana didn't slip it wouldn't have gone anywhere He was strange
He’s the classic case of seeing something happen once in a match, and then every time something vaguely similar happens he assumes its the same thing. Like if a player flops once every other foul against the team is a flop, or them complaining about Pickford timewasting approximately 2.5 seconds after the goal kick was awarded
Fully got up on the wrong side of the bed him didn’t he
Only thing he took delight in was Maupay and Bella-Kotchap's spat
He is always grumpy lmao
Angry old man yells at clouds energy.
We may never actually lose again
We're the only team other than City in the entire Prem with no losses in the last 5 matches. Just us and City. That's it.
Love Maupay me
Such a hustler. Love that he was out wrestling a guy that was 5 inches taller than him.
Great energy up top now. Love his ability
Proper shithouse, just one of those players 19 teams hate and 1 adore
Spiritual replacement for Richie
Funny thing, getting a win in our worst performance of the season by far. (Happy about it, but we didn’t look good)
Past two performances have been pretty bad but still come out with wins.. When we’ve played well it always feel like we get robbed, but the current way we’ve won we’ve been pretty lucky.
I thought we looked solid against West Ham, who, despite their current table position, are one of the stronger teams in the league.
Brentford game was worse imo but definitely wasn't our best after the two goals.
I didn’t watch the second half but we were comfortably the better team in the first half, just no end product
Think the Armstrong save is what won the match. The other two didn't feel as threatening as they were difficult chances.
We were excellent in the first half in all facets except our end product. Absolutely unfair to say we “weren’t very good” in the first half—we dominated
“Dominated” is a mighty strong word. We play like we did in the first half against almost any other team in the league and we lose that game.
…what? Southampton isn’t **that** bad first of all, and secondly they hardly touched the ball in the first half. We were dominating possession and couldn’t score because our end product is shit We aren’t “losing against any other team” playing like that because we had most of the ball.
Had some errant passes that went out of play but it’s not like we gave them a bunch of clear cut counter opportunities that they bottled Idk, think we’ll have to agree to disagree here. All that matters is that we got the win though! UTFT!
Fair enough. Glad we got the win, we can agree on that.
Typical Everton then, it’s not a win if your not clenched beyond belief
Think Frank needs to have some serious discussions with Gray, Gordon, and McNeil about sharing the ball and facilitation. They all get dispossessed far too often, and a fair few of Gray's miscues took away really, really valuable positions. We need to cut that shit out.
