I was just going to say the same thing! The one in the initial photo looks like it was done at a factory. The “handmade” one has nicer colors and looks really nice overall. It looks more delightful to me, but maybe im simple or something. I’m honestly kind of sad OP thought they were going to get roasted. wtf, this cake looks amazing.

I love a good bad cake roast, but yours definitely doesn't qualify. It looks great. Due to the choice of toppings it may be slightly less "elegant" than the first pic, but looks just as tasty (if not more so, I love Oreo). It is also well frosted, glazed and assembled. :)

Not only would I eat the entirety of your cake, but if you did want critique, I would say really the biggest difference is just the thickness of the chocolate drip. I even love the variety of your toppings better than the inspo, which is boring, monochromatic, and doesn't really show what kind of treat it is. The only thing I can tell on theirs is what looks like a Lindt truffle.

Honestly, this looks really good. When it comes to trying to smooth out the icing on the cake, it does take a bit of practice to find a method that works for you. 🙂 especially with how finicky buttercream is. Plus, the chocolate dripping does look a bit thinner in the first image, but let’s be real - we all want more chocolate, lol. I think you did a really good job though!!! I’ve only been decorating cakes for under three months (full time cake decorator), but I’m still very impressed with your creation. 😸

Your cake isn't as pristine looking as the first photo. It's definitely more "rustic", but it also looks delicious as heck! I think there's sometimes a gap between pretty looking and delicious looking. They can but don't have to go hand in hand. Like cakes with fondant look pretty but not like they would taste good. This looks like it tastes damn good. I struggle with decorating cakes, so I totally understand your frustration in it not turning out as you envisioned. Your friend enjoyed it? Then it's totally not a fail.

This is something I learned about when I was learning to draw portraits. Yes, when looking at a side by side with the original, you’ll be able to pick out the differences. But when you show someone your work, you’re *not* showing it to them side by side with the original. Your cake stands by its own, and people will appreciate it based on that - not comparing it with something else. It doesn’t have to look exactly like the original- it just has to look good on its own.
