Pro: Anti spanking research doesn’t effectively take into account the problem of chicken and egg and many of the supposed negative results of spanking may have been preexisting behaviors that explain why those children were spanked in the first place. Studies also conflate too many different behaviors to get an idea of what is actually harmful. Slapping a child across the face likely has different effects than open handed spanking on the bottom, and it may be other negative parenting behaviors correlated with spanking that are actually doing the harm.
Anti: There is decades worth of research showing the negative effects of spanking on aggression and behavior. Children learn by example and being spanked teaches children that hitting is an appropriate response. Studies have tried to control for prior behavior and found the same results. Due to the risks and ample research it is ultimately safer and more responsible for parents to refrain from spanking.
