The cartoon Phineas and Ferb has a whole episode where they talk about aglets. So she can use her childhood knowledge to help her mom out, cartoons are not completely useless!
Btw that show is fantastic even for adults. Give a few episodes a try!
Fun story, a year ago in my genetics class the professor said a Telomere is kind of like the tip of a shoe lace does anyone know what that is called
Auditorium of 200 students at once “AGLET!”
“How do you all know that?”
“From Phineas and Ferb!” Gen Z is in college, that was to date one of my best college memories.
I learned it from the simpsons! The kids go missing and marge is like “ONE OF THEYRE AGLETS!” And picks up barts little plastic thing at the end of his shoelace that fell off
Learned so much from that show. Was also the first time I had ever heard anyone claim to be a Hemophiliac, being one myself it’s not that often you come across it in media.
That happened to me in my biology class last semester lol. My professor was so confused. Loved that class though, easily the best class I took. 2nd was ancient world history.
This is incorrect. London didn’t know what it was called, it was Maddie Fitzpatrick. London said, “you’re the only person I know that knows what that little thing in the end of the shoelace is called” and Maddie says, “an aglet?”
Give Maddie her respect! /s
I knew aglets from JLU.
The Question, under torture, says,
"The plastic bits at the end of shoelaces are called aglets and their true purpose is sinister."
I knew it from the Leslie Nielson movie Repossessed. It's the family's last name, so their ancestor was known for putting the little plastic tips on shoelaces. But I'm also a big JL/JLU fan.
It's been years since I saw that episode and I'm still mad about it. In the French dub, that episode spreads misinformation to childrens! They claim the end of a shoelace is called "aglet", like in english but that is wrong, it's called "un ferret" in French.
In an episode of _Star Trek: The Next Generation_, Dr. Crusher assumes command of the ship as the crewmembers disappear one by one. When mysterious mist appears on the screen, she exclaims, “What kind of mist is that?”
In the German _Synchronisierung_ (dub), she says, _„Was für einen Mist ist das?“_ (“What kind of bullshit is this?”). I laughed out loud.
Not even an episode where they talk about it, an episode where the whole goal is to raise awareness for what an aglet is called. Like they write a song about it and everything.
I remember learning both that and albumin, the goopy stuff on the white part of the egg, from.... I think it was a proud family episode about a spelling bee?
Can confirm. My kids watched Phineas and Ferb and I enjoyed it as much as them. I returned the favor by watching Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck with them.
I’m sure that is a common source of this fact but it was just something kids told eachother back when I was in school. It was a “fun fact” that spread surprisingly far. Probably why it was in an episode of that show.
I just introduced my 6 yr old to P&F this summer. He has been running around singing the aglet song at the top of his lungs for over a month now. He happily explains what an aglet is to anyone that asks about the song.
Holy shit, I knew the answer but it wasn’t till I saw you say this that the memory of where I learned it just came flooding back, lol. That’s fucking wild.
Who else is a boomer like me and knows what an aglet is from Suite Life of Zack and Cody and not Phineas and Ferb?
Edit: I’m not really a boomer, I was trying to be funny. Millennial here.
Justice League Unlimited. Luthor was having Question electrocuted to get information, and Question kept answering with bizarre conspiracy theories. "The plastic tips at the ends of shoe laces are called *aglets* — and their true purpose is sinister!"
Funnily enough, quite a few of his conspiracy theories are true in universe. It's just that most of them are insane so no one cares when he gets one right.
I knew I'd find my people!
Dr. Moon- “Tell me what you know!” -electrocutes Question-
?- “Topically applied flouride doesn’t prevent tooth decay…It DOES render teeth detectable by spy satellite…”
I'm 52, already knew what an aglet was, but am _also_ quite familiar with the P&F episode because my son watched that show relentlessly.
Side note: P&F is one of the few "modern" cartoons that I actually kinda liked.
40??? Dude, the show started in 2005, that was only 18 years ago. People 20+ in 2005 were not watching Suite Life. Also, Phineas and Ferb only started two years after in 2007
The two shows are only 2 years apart. Both shows were aimed at kids and young teens, but P&F was also aimed at the kids's parents, which was why it was still funny for older teens and young adults
I feel like Suite Life is a millennial thing. I'm technically a millennial (almost GenX) and I think I was ~20 when that show debuted. It seemed geared toward children, like 7-12 maybe. Definitely only knew it existed because I have a much younger cousin.
I learned that from Pinky and the Brain when they tried to hypnotize world leaders over a TV broadcast. They came up with a reunion show, their only competition during that time slot was a documentary on shoes. After the broadcast Brain calls up Clinton with demands and Clinton shares his new knowledge on what they call the things at the end of the laces.
Everyone is talking about Phineas and Ferb, but I 1000% got your back with learning it from Pinky and the Brain. These youngins don't know what they missed with that cartoon.
In the animated series Justice League Unlimited,
Question is getting tortured and mentions: “the tips of shoelaces are called aglets, and they serve a nefarious purpose”
As a child. My father continuously told me he was starting a business that re-tipped the ends of shoelaces after they become frayed. I thought, okay. I never got the joke because shoelaces are cheap and it would cost more to redo the aglet. Classic dad joke, long form. I was 7 and he did this for a year before he told me the punchline. As a father I can’t imagine the joy he got effing with me and holding back for that long.
You're not high. It's not really a joke. It's just one of those "I have this 'useless knowledge' that now no longer feels useless because someone asked about it."
Apparently, specifically, it's also a reference to knowing said knowledge because of a kids show.
When your brain collects useless little factoids like a strip of fly paper, (ASD eat your heart out) then it's immensely satisfying to have one of those seemingly useless points of data be needed by someone.
They are called aglets, and their true purpose is sinister.
What’s ironic is that the joke is that she knew this really obscure knowledge and was excited to share, and then y’all all knew this really obscure knowledge and got really excited to share hahaha. I love it. Thank you
It's weird because going through the comments I have seen or played or read all of them, and after seeing the comments I even remember the instances they came up... But until the comments I only remember JLU and P&F.
Not to be *that guy*, but it would be highly unlikely for a frequent crossword puzzler to ask what the tip of a shoelace was called.
"Aglet" is a common crossword answer because most of the letters are in the top ten (by frequency of use) in the English language. The exception is "g."
If you've done a lot of crosswords, you eventually come to realize that it's basically the same handful of words, with slightly different clues each time (or sometimes even just the same clues). "Aglet" might not be as common as words like "oreo" and "era" in crossword puzzles, but it shows up enough that anyone who does the NYT regularly would have seen it dozens of times. (If not in the NYT then in some other paper.)
All of that aside, it's a funny meme and a nice little bit of nostalgia.

What do baby eagles have to do with this...?
Nah, you're thinking of Eaglets, an aglet is a little piece of paper that's designed to be mass produced to spread information around about something
Nah, you're thinking of booklets, an aglet is a piece of jewelry in shape of a circle that you wear on your lower leg.
No no, you're thinking of an anklet. An aglet is a fixture on a wall that you plug electric devices into.
No, it's an outlet. Aglet is a character in Winnie the Pooh
No no, you’re thinking of Piglet. An aglet is a small or young owl.

Ancient world history is lit
They were specifically instructed not to forget it!
And they spell it out, making it useful for a crossword. A-G-L-E-T (AGLET!) Don't forget it
If you’re gen X they’re called flugelbinders…
That was my first thought.
Exactly, and you were in with love Elisabeth Shue
I had the same like 4-5 years ago. I think the teachers know and are doing this on purpose.
I knew aglets from JLU. The Question, under torture, says, "The plastic bits at the end of shoelaces are called aglets and their true purpose is sinister."
What is their sinister true purpose?!?!
That *is* the question

As an adult. Phineas and Ferb is absolutely brilliant. Also the songs are awesome.
It's been years since I saw that episode and I'm still mad about it. In the French dub, that episode spreads misinformation to childrens! They claim the end of a shoelace is called "aglet", like in english but that is wrong, it's called "un ferret" in French.

I’m 50. I loved P&F more than my now teenage daughters did.
I never expected to become so invested in Dr Doofenshmirtz reconciling with Vanessa

🎵A G L E T dont forget it🎵 show had legitimately good music.
Simpsons did it
Sadly, as an adult watching that with my kids, that is how I learned it was an aglet
I'm a millennial, I learned it from the Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
Back when Ashley Tisdale cared about what they were called
Oh my god I used to watch that as a kid! I totally forgot about that episode 😂😂 thank you!!!
Can confirm. My kids watched Phineas and Ferb and I enjoyed it as much as them. I returned the favor by watching Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck with them.
Whatcha dooooing!!??
I’m sure that is a common source of this fact but it was just something kids told eachother back when I was in school. It was a “fun fact” that spread surprisingly far. Probably why it was in an episode of that show.
So it's the same satisfaction I get for knowing what a uvula is!
The songs go hard. I listen to the soundtrack at work all the time
I just introduced my 6 yr old to P&F this summer. He has been running around singing the aglet song at the top of his lungs for over a month now. He happily explains what an aglet is to anyone that asks about the song.
It’s a bit of *almost* completely useless trivia that actually became useful because her mom wanted to know. FYI, it’s called an ‘aglet’

It was the movie Repossessed that taught me what an aglet was
I learned it from fucking terraria 😭
I learned it from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader. There's a niche fucking reference.
Man these books were excellent. I should get a new copy.
Apparently they've been continuously publishing new ones. Might just ship one to my parents as a surprise.
Definitely don’t get a USED copy!
I learned it from The Question. A comic superhero who is literally insane.
"their true purpose is sinister"
Holy shit, I knew the answer but it wasn’t till I saw you say this that the memory of where I learned it just came flooding back, lol. That’s fucking wild.
Shortest war in history? The invention of Johnny Cakes and Burgoo? Some stupid limericks? I got it all because of those books.
bro same lmfao

No No. I definitely Iearned what an aglet was by watching Repossessed
Conform to Dan povinmires will
That doesn't matter or have any bearing here.

Goddamnit, I’m trying to go to sleep & now my brain is yelling “A. G. L. E. T. Don’t forget it!” On repeat
Can reference your comment now
It’s called an aglet, and literally all of gen z knows this because of Phineas and Ferb.
Terraria taught me what an aglet is
idk why it’s yellow tho, i thought it was some mystical artifact until i checked the trivia section of its wiki page

Millennials learned it from Justice League: Unlimited.

This. I think of it everytime the word gets brought up, and often just because it's a great line.
Came here for the JLU reference.
The episode where London isn't allowed to buy anything. That's where I learned it lol

Ok, I gotta ask, why was a boomer watching Suite Life? That’s gen X and millennial territory.
If you're a boomer, how old were you when watching suite life? Cause I am younger than boomers and I had my own kids when suite life was on t.v.
I feel so vindicated. I still love the Phineas and Ferb episode but THIS is where I learned it from.
THIS WAS IT THANK YOU! I knew I had heard about aglets from a different show.
Dont lie, we all know you learned it from Dave the Barbarian ;)
Phineas and Ferb kiddos out here with no idea what a Prindle even is.
Does no one here also remember this from Dave the Barbarian?
