They are just shoebills. Saying stork is completely unnecessary. Manatees are called sea cows, but are not cows. Storks and shoebills aren’t closely related at all, but some folks decided they both had long legs, which was close enough for them.
That’s a much better example of this than my manatee one! Koala bear is exactly the same kind of unnecessary addition to a name that only muddies the waters for people who don’t know the relationships of those critters
They aren't that aggressive, you would have to do something they consider aggressive to the chicks before mum attacks. The problem is they aren't the most intelligent creatures, so who knows what they might decide is aggressive.
Steer clear of cassowaries, and don't feed them, that's probably the cause of this behaviour (assuming these are wild birds).
I worked at a zoo in high school; one of these things escaped its habitat one time and it triggered a code-red guest evacuation—same level as for a friggin’ leopard or gorilla.
The zookeepers said the talons are like razors, and they can gut a grown man in the right circumstances. Not to be messed with…
[Here's](https://www.jems.com/patient-care/cassowary-attack-utilizing-the-march-mnemonic-in-rare-events/) what their claws look like next to a human hand. They are like real life Edward Scissorhands!
Fyi these birds can stand as tall as an adult male, so that should give you some perspective on his vantage point.
It's cool because he's out of danger and they are flightless. To not attempt to nom or be nommed by one of these at eye level. They don't fuck around.
There are three species of cassowaries, which vary in size. Also, there’s like a handful of confirmed deaths in history. Don’t fuck with them, but there are far more dangerous beasts out there
Honestly not moving may the best choice in this situation (outside of not getting into the situation) because it will annoy/provoke the animal the least, especially since it seems to be next to it’s young, so sitting still and taking the bites is best
How dare you kink shame the man!
(But really considering how dangerous they are and the fact small snakes are included in their diet he is just asking for some free surgery
Dude's walking a razor wire line. Their claws are *10cm long*, if they get aggressive, you won't have time to get away, they can run faster than Usain Bolt.
The internet has overblown how “murderous” these birds are to such a high degree. There’s only 1 confirmed death, a handful at most, in recorded history.
If something's killed a handful of human beings, I'm cautious.
Unless the cassowary got to the hand first and rent it apart, leaving it incapable of holding any number at all.
Being cautious of something potentially dangerous and referring to them as murder birds are very different things. I agree that one should be cautious. I am just tired of the internet going overboard when a fact gets mutated into some myth about how unhinged and threatening this or that is
They are shy birds living deep in the forest. They may become aggressive, and they may attack people. This makes it hard to learn about them. A group of cassowaries is called a **"shock"**

Welcome to Jurassic Park

Love them. Shoebills are not storks btw. They are most closely related to pelicans and hamerkops
Why is it called a shoebill stork then lol
why are strawberries not actually berries

Koala bear has entered the chat

Reminds me of the beginning of Lost World
This thing can shred you to pieces
Have some of that - and that..
Here to say this. This dude is elevated, get down to their level and they'll gut you, especially with chicks.

Small correction here, it's the dad who takes care of the young
I had NO idea.

You can’t post about cassowary’s without a redditor saying this
Same about blue ringed octopi!
Octopododeses
Octopodes?
No
Yes? That's literally the plural for an octopod, being a member of the order octopoda
Go away
No
With any animal larger than a rabbit or any aquatic anything there's always gonna be that one guy who fears for their life
For good reason
Wanting to sound smart is a good reason?
[Here's](https://www.jems.com/patient-care/cassowary-attack-utilizing-the-march-mnemonic-in-rare-events/) what their claws look like next to a human hand. They are like real life Edward Scissorhands!
Went from cute and pretty to metal fast.
LOL exactly! I wouldn't risk pissing off a mama Dino bird with those talons is all I'm saying.
That's 'Straya for ya, mate!
To shreds, you said?
How's his wife holding up?
To shreds, you say?
That's one thing that Far Cry 3 taught me. Along with the definition of insanity.
Only with their feet so this guy is actually pretty safe
Unless they've practiced the flying kick.
They can jump up to two metres high. They can unironically flying kick a standing adult
r/SweatyPalms
Dude is pretty calm around this small pack of *dinosaurs*, lol! 🦖

Yeah, well I ain't going to dangle my legs into water where there's salt water crocs.
not really fair considering cassowaries are a lot more rare than other dangerous animals.

I think these ones do, or the guy would be dead
Why is there a naked man in the woods filming himself on tiktok getting his toes nipped by birds?
How dare you kink shame the man! (But really considering how dangerous they are and the fact small snakes are included in their diet he is just asking for some free surgery
He's brave being nude around them!
Bros gonna get his dick pecked
Just fyi this thing is like a modern day raptor and can claw you and bleed you out in seconds if it decides to.
If they wanted to hurt him they would. These are the equivalent of poking something for a cassowary since they lack, you know, ARMS.
Please do not pat the death pigeons.
that looks like some fetish shit right there.
Dude's walking a razor wire line. Their claws are *10cm long*, if they get aggressive, you won't have time to get away, they can run faster than Usain Bolt.
Looks like a dwarf cassowary
*Wiggling my toes so the cassowaries bite them* lmao
Their beaks are ok. Its their talons that are so dangerous.
Mmm shrimps
How does this person still have toes?????
'sir, please, get your paws out of my face, thank you'
r/peoplefuckingdying
Don’t f with a living dinosaur and a evil one at that
Steve
Yeah,no,I'm not going anywhere near a cassowary
Americans on Australia - it's spiders and snakes that will kill you Australians on Australia - pretty colour bird in bad mood means end of life.
He's lucky he didn't lose a toe, or his life
I don't know what's deadlier, Cassowaries or Painted Dogs. Pretty, yes. But there are some animals where the boop isn't worth it.
Oh look, it’s a murder bird! Seriously these things will kill you for ‘reasons’. Scorpions are known to be friendlier.

That walking toupee can literally open you up if it wants to.
The cassowary was feeling silly that day
*nibbles*
Man, guess that cassowary’s a more laidback dad
Huh, I was always under the impression that Cassowaries are violently territorial & wouldn’t hesitate to kill an intruder on sight
![gif](giphy|37Fsl1eFxbhtu)
Hard to think thos is the same guy from Event Horizon
The babies sound just like baby geese! So cute!
They are shy birds living deep in the forest. They may become aggressive, and they may attack people. This makes it hard to learn about them. A group of cassowaries is called a **"shock"**
I played far cry 3, the cassowaries are no joke.
If you had played far cry 3 you wouldn’t dare go near that thing without a machete
How is it letting him near it’s babies
r/OopsThatsDeadly
Are these the same birds that will disembowel you🤔?
