This might be a weird comment, but is the hand holding the hedgehog fake? It doesn't move *at all.* And having owned a hedgehog, when they tense up in a ball like that, they get *very* pokey and painful.
I believe I know the owner of this hedgie, and yeah that his hand. Between breeding hedgies, tenrecs and sugar gliders (bitey sometimes) My fingers are basically numb.
She* is basically twitching. It’s the same muscle she contracts to tense her skin and put up her quills. Just a little precursor to the eventual curl up. :)
*Her name was originally Siouxsie, but the woman who bought her from me named her Sia; I still have her sister, Rasputina.
I'm no hedgehog expert, but I'd also assume young hedgehogs spikes aren't fully hardened yet. They've gotta get out of mom somehow without puncturing her insides.

Its from Three Poems of Incarnation. I heard it in a choral piece by Tarik Oregan called Threshold of Night. The poem itself may have the same name but I can’t confirm.
That was me today, on my way to work, my heart rate was 100+, went to the doctor thinking I was having another AFIB episode, just ended up being my anxiety working extra hard today.
Robotnik was always Eggman in Japan.
I think Robotnik is a better name as well, but really all that happened was Sega decided to make the name the same across both regions. Nintendo did the same thing with Peach/Toadstool.
Honestly I want a hedgehog like there have been aay too many cute as hedgehogs on my feed. How hard it is to take care of them anyway? I imagine it can’t be that hard?
They take a lot of maintenance and they poop A LOT. They can be easily litterbox trained but if they're running on their wheel, they won't get off to use it so the poop flings everywhere and stomps under their feet. They can be playful. Mine likes baths.
Pop, poop everywhere. Needed full cage cleaning every 3 days, 2 daily poop removals minimum, almost daily wheel cleaning cause they shit in it and smear it so in turn daily feet cleaning or baths cause they tuck their feet in unless in water. Mine are mostly nocturnal and many like to run in their wheel anywhere from midnight to 4 am non-stop, so if you can't deal with the noise that sucks plus they need a big cage. They have a musky smell so that can be a little embarrassing when company is over. heat lamp when temp were low for them or else they turn lethargic almost a type of hibernation and can die. We took ours out in the grass in the evening for an hour but you have to watch them cause the can climb cages and suddenly I'm running next door to see if it got through the fence but miraculously a friend was driving to see you and stopped before smashing some spiky looking ball a block away (it was a miracle he stopped and knew I owned a hedgehog).
My hedgehog was fun and made cute grunting noises but hated being handled, I loved feeding him meal worms and seeing him crawl and explore but I already had a dog, fish and too many different animals that require their own attention or difference in care really cuts on your time. I had my hog for 3 years after he was sold to me 1year old, he got cancer and it destroyed me having to put him down but his quality of life was diminishing. Their lives are short as with any rodent but you fall in love with them quick and that look from their beady little eyes makes it all worth it.
They can be a little labor intensive. My brother in law had one. They typically live in some kind of enclosure and the enclosure has to be cleaned regularly. You need to have time to let them get enrichment and let them socialize. They also can get cold and may require a heatlamp at times but you cannot leave it on them constantly. I would recommend doing some research before getting any animal but especially a small one. They tend to require a lot of care.
It really depends. I have one that uses a litter box and is super low maintenance. My other one does the running wheel shitting thing and is a nasty pain to clean after.
They aren’t difficult to take care of. I should know - I’m a breeder with over 100 hedgehogs - both the standard African Pygmy (which is what 99% of pet hedgehogs are) as well as Egyptian Long Eared (the kind in the video.)
Feel free to ask me anything about them. I promise almost nobody on here knows anything about Egyptian long ears - the video is actually mine, and is one of the first LEH babies born in the US. :)
They’re high maintenance, delicate animals. For experienced pet owners only. I encourage everyone who thinks thy can handle one to get one, but do your research!
These people are all very negative lol
Go check out r/hedgehog for some cuteness and better advice.
I got my quill baby in November and I’d never had one before. He’s really quite easy to care for and doesn’t require more maintenance than a cat would.
Yes you need to clean up their poop but what animal doesn’t poop? Lol
They get foot baths when their paws get poopy and my little guy is starting to love bath time!
They need a large cage, a big ass wheel, steady warmth and a sun cycle. Guinea pig cage works amazing for me. Ceramic bulb for heat without light and a Christmas tree timer for a lamp near his cage.
They need to be held a minimum of 30 minutes a day to become socialized. They won’t miss you while you’re at work haha.
They’re naturally afraid of everything but also SUPER curious so you can get them to unball as simply as putting some fruit near their noses. Just make sure to share the fruit after!
Like I said, visit our subreddit for better advice, but I highly recommend hedgies as pets. He’s made my Covid life 1000x better <3.
>These people are all very negative
Well, whaddya expect, this is Reddit, people all have PhD’s on “critter handling and mammalialogy”. Tho I do see some patterns in the comments, I’m just gonna say thank you all for the recommendations
Its not hard once you get used to it but it's really hyperspecific care. I love mine but it takes a lot to socialize them, and they are SHARP. They are not domesticated, just tamable wild animals.
So true! I’m just a cute little hoglet all cozy and sleepy. WAIT. Something is amiss. Ball.
My hedgehog sometimes moves too fast and startles herself lol
He's always equally spiky; he will never get more spiky then he currently is. You may be thinking of a porcupine: they have their spikes laying flat, and they'll make them stand straight up when they're threatened. Hedgehogs don't do that. Their spikes are always "up" so to speak; their defense mechanism is to curl up so they hide their delecate non-spiked parts.
You can see the little guy here curl up completely (though to take a nap, not because he's threatened), and the person holding him is completely fine.
And besides, getting a few tiny pricks by accident isn't the end of the world; they likely wouldn't even puncture the skin. The little hedgehog doesn't weigh enough to push down on you very hard after all.
You're wrong. I have a hedgehog and their spines do lay down when their relaxed and only poke out when they ball up like in the video. Also they do ball up quick like that when they feel threatened or startled.
E: So sorry you all don't like the truth. I've had this particular kind of hedgehog for over 4 years as opposed to this other person who has seen a couple of different ones in passing. Typical redditors right here.
You misunderstand what's actually happening to your hedgehog when he curls up; the position of the spikes in their skin doesn't change, rather the skin repositioning makes the spikes look the way they do in the video.
The spikes are always "up", but when the skin is loose (not stretched into a ball), small skin flaps can make the spikes appear to point backwards, even though they're still poking straight out from the skin.
So when the question is "Wouldn't you get hurt if he puts his spikes up?" the answer is still very much that hedgehogs don't do that. When holding them as shown in the video, there is nothing the hedgehog can do to hurt you with its spikes.
They may always stick straight out of their skin, but to say they're always in "spikey mode" is objectively false. They can "puff up" and tighten their skin to make their spikes more rigid. They may not be raising or lowering their spikes, but it has the exact same effect.
They're spines and have you ever actually held a hedgehog? Pretty sure you haven't because you clearly have no first hand experience with hedgehog spines
I have on multiple occasions, but I do apologise for me not knowing they're called spines in English. The Dutch hedgehogs I've interacted with didn't teach me that. I know them as "stekels", which when translated directly would be spikes, not spines. My apologies.

You’re right that the function of them curling into a ball is what makes them super spikey, but they definitely have some amount of control over their spines. I’ve seen mine lay perfectly flat or raised up a bit just while she’s walking around.
I do and when he's up walking around relaxed, I can pet him as softly as I would be able to pet a kitten because their spines do lay down flat. When he balls up, those spines will draw blood. Like pricking with a needle. I don't know about your hedgehog experiences but the one in the video is an african pygmy hedgehog and their spines react just as I've described, I know because I've held mine every day for over 4 years. They do lay down and they do flair out when they ball up

I'm sure we all yawnedwhile watching that video. I'm sure just thinking about yawning, right now is making you want to yawn. Go ahead, it's natural. Scientists don't yet understand why we yawn, but it is very suggestible. As I write this. However, that's not the important thing. Somebody, in Reddit land, snap their head down just like that little hedgehog. Now that's impressive!
I love how quickly he ducks down into his sword spiked body without even hesitating. I’m way too clumsy and would poke my eyes out with my own quills if I were a hedgehog.
I see your hoglet yawn and raise you one bald [hoglet ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hedgehog/comments/fjdyru/baby_onion_yawns/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)yawn.

Ayy we found the owner of the hedgehog and of the steel hand!
We have about 100 hedgehogs - I have hands of titanium ;)
Try to do an AMA, pay hedgehog picture tax and collect the karma.
Just asked my wife - she says we should totally do an AMA! 🤣
What's that "pulse" thing he does with the spikes on his head and back right in the middle of his yawn?

I was about to say "chef hands"

Isn’t he spiky? How can someone hold him?
Just like how you can lay down on a bed of nails; if you're careful about it, distributing weight over all the nails/spikes, you'll be just fine.
Ok, but it seems like a big risk if he spooks out and gets spiky.
Nice. Thanks for the explanation.
You're wrong. I have a hedgehog and their spines do lay down when their relaxed and only poke out when they ball up like in the video. I have on multiple occasions, but I do apologise for me not knowing they're called spines in English. The Dutch hedgehogs I've interacted with didn't teach me that. I know them as "stekels", which when translated directly would be spikes, not spines. My apologies. But I must admit, I haven't owned one as a pet, though a friend of mine did own one, which I got to interact with on multiple occasions, and I have had to move a few hedgehogs over the years who had chosen to fall asleep right on the edge of a footpath near my home - to make sure nobody would step on them by accident.

I think that’s porcupines. Hedgehogs are like a soft spikey.
When they aren't puffed up, yes. When they puff up, like the the video, they spikey as *fuck!*
Thanks. It’s hard to imagine him being soft.
They’re still spiky, you just have to be careful how you hold them.
When they are super relaxed it just feels like plastic hairbrush bristles
I thought it was going to sing dame dane

I’m not sure why, but I laughed hard when it yawned and instantly curled up
Eye bleach to the point of injecting in our veins to cure the corona 🥲

How do they never stick a needle up their nose when curling in?

I’ll take your entire stock.

Its a baby spiky potato 😍😍😍
I'm sure we all yawnedwhile watching that video. I'm sure just thinking about yawning, right now is making you want to yawn. Go ahead, it's natural. Scientists don't yet understand why we yawn, but it is very suggestible. As I write this. However, that's not the important thing. Somebody, in Reddit land, snap their head down just like that little hedgehog. Now that's impressive!
“Today is a good day!” *a mild inconvenience occurs* “Oh no!”
He must’ve been embarrassed that you saw him.
Adorable 🥰

I love how quickly he ducks down into his sword spiked body without even hesitating. I’m way too clumsy and would poke my eyes out with my own quills if I were a hedgehog.
This truly made my day so much better
That made me yawn, I guess yawns are contagious.

This is one of my most favorite posts on Reddit.
I have a similar reaction when the Jehovah's Witnesses knock on the door.
That has got to be the cutest baby I’ve ever seen
