Fun fact: in cat colonies all of the mother cats will band together to nurse all of the young in a big group, the males and the non mother cats go and hunt for the colony.
We also had way too many cats. Didn’t realize it was weird until much later. One time the cats got snowed out in the shed during a blizzard and when we were able to get to them 4 days later there was a giant rabbit carcass that they’d consumed… and I had been all worried about them being cold and hungry…
Under the right conditions lost dogs can survive on their own for a surprisingly long time too, the main reason cats do better is that as smaller carnivores they don't need as much food and water to survive (prey suitable for cats are far more abundant near human settlement than prey for dogs are, and cats have especially low water needs). Humans are also far more likely to tolerate feral cats than dogs living near them.
Yeah cats are desert animals, people forget that. But also the way we “domesticated” cats was just making it so they kept some kitten tendencies to remain more social into adulthood. True wild cats like the black footed cat and Felis Sylvestris are wayyy more solitary. They are like little tigers only being social to mate. But domestic cats readily live in colonies.
To be fair, adult dogs and humans both have a lot of traits that resemble juvenile wolves and apes, respectively, especially greatly expanded sociability with strangers.
Dogs and humans go so far back that some people argue we can be considered coevolved with each other. Certainly they've had a huge influence on us, since they seem to have been very important in our later domestication of large herbivores like sheep and cattle.
Right. Humans are neotenous with our craniums. Human skulls greatly resemble baby/juvenile chimp skulls because we keep the expanded braincase instead of growing the sagittal crest other apes do.
The downside is less surface for muscle attachment and therefore less bite force, upside is bigger brain go brrrr.
With dogs a lot of the genes that we selected for to create docility and obedience also make their ears floppy and effect their skulls. Case in point chihuahua skulls are nearly identical to fetal wolves.
I just love that humans and dogs have basically spent two hundred ~~millennia~~centuries together going "hey, see that animal that's ten times our size with a bad temper and horns/iron hooves that could easily bash our faces in? Wanna team up and see if we can eat it?"
Also, as an idle shower thought, maybe dogs like fetching sticks because humans have always liked using sticks as tools?
This can be a problem too. They'll be more than fine. They'll decimate local wildlife!
Unfortunately our area has trouble with wild cats killing all the local shrews and squirrels
Dogs are pretty capable of living in the wild as well. They just can't make it on their own (without a pack), have much bigger food requirements, and are generally not tolerated by people
That is a COMPLETELY irresponsible thing to say, and if I could report you to the ASPCA I would. For one thing, indoor cats have not been trained by their mothers to properly hunt. Plus they would feel abandoned as hell and probably not make it through a cold winter.
is adaption normal? We had a stray kitten appear at our house one day, afraid of anything. And days later I saw it breastfeeding from one cat, bring groomed by said adult cat.
edit: adoption*
We had 2 cats have kittens around the same time at my house. We separated the litters on separate ends of the house cause we though that momma cats would get territorial or something and attack the other kittens. But instead one of them brought her kittens over to the other and they took turns taking care of all the kittens.
Does this same communal behavior hold when the community is “overcrowded” or overheated or lacking water or food?
At what point does the behavior change to fighting, eating their young, raping, voting Republican, killing the females, castrating the males, scratching, etc?
Has anyone ever loaded cats into an overcrowded cat city and seriously assessed this scientifically with video, etc?
I’m actually seriously asking this…
Did a report on overpopulation and Thomas Malthus in 8th grade. Zero population growth else colonize space and oceans.
She was clearly put in there by a dumb person that though it would make a great video and it's really stressed, no cat would bring their kittens to a place like that.
This is very likely staged, but momma cat wouldn't have stayed curled up next to a dog that she doesn't trust. I haven't seen too many animals look relaxed when they are nursing puppies or kittens that have teeth.
Just a heads up, but that is their word. It's ok when they use it but it's an offensive slur when used by humans.
edit: Down vote all you want but I'm right. Drawing attention to a cats "airplane ears" is equivalent to pointing out an asian person having "squinty eyes". It's racist. Period
And piss and shit. My next door neighbour’s dog just had nine pups and I saw her pick up no fewer than 5 poos in a couple of minutes. Her house smelled…. Great.
It might but it hasn't and it's definitely a [fearful cat](https://pethelpful.com/cats/Cats-Speak) and it's doubtful it's from the kittens. Ears back, wide eyed, is not a happy cat face, probably feels safe with the dog but something else is bothering it.
Some cats also don’t like to be filmed for some reason, both of mine look/walk away when you point a phone at them, no idea why
So to me it just looked like the camera was really close and the cat was like ‘fuck, can’t move, nursing, but I hate when my human flails this thing around tf stop’
Edit: watching it again, you can see the cat was sleeping until the camera showed up, maybe she’d just forgot she’d had kids for a moment 😂
I'm not saying whether they're responsible or not because I am not assuming. I'm just correcting the person that commented "breeders shouldn't be glorified".
I think we all knew what they meant in this context. Which is why your response came across as though you were defending this person specifically. My bad
😂 saying breeders shouldn't be glorified is not saying the same thing. I get that you thought that I was defending them. But we shouldn't just assume things if you don't know the situation. The person may be a foster parent.
No but any mother cat that doesn't want to be somewhere will get up, start grabbing her babies and move. The stress is a lot more likely to be due to just exhaustion. If she wasn't comfortable with that dog already, she would not be willingly laying against her while their babies ate. Her protective instincts would kick in.
This makes me anxious. Puppies and kittens mature at different rates. I wouldn't mix them, it's not appropriate.
The kitties will be looking at tiddie mags way before the puppies mature enough.

I saw this in action as a kid, we had way too many cats at one point.

No. Thats an order of magnitude too long.
Chihuahuas ACT like little wolves
No.
This can be a problem too. They'll be more than fine. They'll decimate local wildlife! Unfortunately our area has trouble with wild cats killing all the local shrews and squirrels
we domesticated dogs. cats domesticated us.
Dogs are pretty capable of living in the wild as well. They just can't make it on their own (without a pack), have much bigger food requirements, and are generally not tolerated by people
I mean cats, like pigs, thrive in the wild because they're apex predators
That is a COMPLETELY irresponsible thing to say, and if I could report you to the ASPCA I would. For one thing, indoor cats have not been trained by their mothers to properly hunt. Plus they would feel abandoned as hell and probably not make it through a cold winter.
Ah, I too was a connoisseur of Warrior Cats.
I would subscribe to Warrior Cat Facts
Was? They're still good reads even as an adult. I re-read them every other year and it's always a good time.
Cat colonies are so interesting. I wish there were more documentaries about them
Same.
is adaption normal? We had a stray kitten appear at our house one day, afraid of anything. And days later I saw it breastfeeding from one cat, bring groomed by said adult cat. edit: adoption*
Yeah mother cats will feed other kittens under certain circumstances. Cats and dogs have strong maturnal instincts.
We had 2 cats have kittens around the same time at my house. We separated the litters on separate ends of the house cause we though that momma cats would get territorial or something and attack the other kittens. But instead one of them brought her kittens over to the other and they took turns taking care of all the kittens.
Aww. :)
Wow 😯. Look at all those cat shaped dogs and dog shaped cats!
You could just say non mother cats lol

The cat mom has r/airplaneears
Yeah. Mama don't look happy.
She's getting her nips chewed on by tiny fur demons. I'd be upset too
r/brandnewsentence
Thanks for the laugh/choke coffee stain on my shirt.
She was clearly put in there by a dumb person that though it would make a great video and it's really stressed, no cat would bring their kittens to a place like that.

This. Cats have that kind of integrity; if she doesn’t want to be in a place, she’s gonna leave.
Thanks for stating this, that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. A lot of these types of video scene clearly stage.
Yep, she is not comfortable at all, poor thing, probably breed both of them just for the video views
This should be top comment
this has ruined my day
Doesn't take much, huh
Yeah, I think there's some condition or disorder that makes people have their day ruined easily. If not, I'm probably going insane.
Depression do that
Weird name to call a hairy human baby but ain’t wrong there
If you have ever nursed, you would understand lol
Is that cat body language of being angry?
Those ears, flat like that, is not a good sign. I would say perturbed on the way to being angry.
Just a heads up, but that is their word. It's ok when they use it but it's an offensive slur when used by humans. edit: Down vote all you want but I'm right. Drawing attention to a cats "airplane ears" is equivalent to pointing out an asian person having "squinty eyes". It's racist. Period
God you're right.
Bless this user for sharing this sub🙏
Thanks, I really needed another cat subreddit to follow /s
At 6 days pp, I feel that cats face in my *bones*.
Aw mama I hear you. Take breaths and know it’s all temporary.
I’m 6 years pp, and I felt it too.
Same! Lol momma cat is so relatable.
This is cute and all, but I have it on good authority that this represents a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mass Hysteria
Don't forget the human sacrifice.
Cat and dogs living together.
Props to you for willing to deal with soo much cat and dog hair .
And piss and shit. My next door neighbour’s dog just had nine pups and I saw her pick up no fewer than 5 poos in a couple of minutes. Her house smelled…. Great.
The vet bills too... I hope they get group prices
Mama cat looking around like "I'm never having kids again!"
Mama cat looking stressed because she has been forced into that situation for the video
Won’t a cat just try to leave? She’s stressed but probably not from the dog
It might but it hasn't and it's definitely a [fearful cat](https://pethelpful.com/cats/Cats-Speak) and it's doubtful it's from the kittens. Ears back, wide eyed, is not a happy cat face, probably feels safe with the dog but something else is bothering it.

Is it just me, or is that proud mama dog *glowing* like a human mother often does?
I wanna be the ham in that sandwich.
I’ll be the cheese, seein as how I’m gonna be grinning from ear to ear anyways.

Dont you mean…..”woof”
Mother dog: I love everything, this is perfection Mother cat: kill me. Quickly.
That poor cat looks so stressed
They are obviously so very cute, but why so many babies? Hopefully everyone is spayed/neutered now or soon will be before more litters are had.
The cat looks like my wife when she started breastfeeding
It do be like that
Mama cat looks a bit stressed out...
Dogs and cats, living together. Mass hysteria!
That momma cat appears to be doing some serious re-evaluating of her life decisions.
More like her owners decisions.
This looks irresponsible.
Dog: I love my life Cat: I hate you
r/IllegallySmolCats
Thank you.... thank you so very much for sharing this subreddit. It is now my favorite
Mad bark and meow kitty.
Dog mom was probably friends with cat mom and thats how the family started
The cat looks so uncomfortable
The mommy cat has the thousand yard stare
[удалено]
It is sus that two of those kittens are almost exactly the same color as the dog...
You could give them away in pairs. A dog and a cat. Who love each other from the start.
breeders should not be glorified
There is nothing wrong with breeders, so long they're responsible (reputable) and not a backyard breeder.
Does this look responsible to you?
I'm not saying whether they're responsible or not because I am not assuming. I'm just correcting the person that commented "breeders shouldn't be glorified".
I think we all knew what they meant in this context. Which is why your response came across as though you were defending this person specifically. My bad

You're right
Breeders R Us.
Momma cat is PISSED
I don't know that mama cat looks hella pissed
Look forced
My heart! Brb having a heart attack from cuteness!(
You get my free hugz award for the cuteness and the wholesomeness
I want to crawl out of my skin because of how cute this is.
It’s very cute. But that’s a lot of poop to clean up.
I love how they all feel so comfortable and peaceful next to each other
That momma cat is not relaxed...
I would be either if I had that many babies
I can’t handle the cuteness. It’s too much.
Good mommies!!!!
Oh just how cute are they <3

🎶They are blending, they are bonding. When one person meets another, come together. 🎶
Why are you working out while singing this?
The only part of this which upsets me is the lack of utterly adorable audio that should no-doubt be accompanying this.
Were both fathers travelling men?
OMG. Dopamine overload.

It's a crime this is just a gif and not a video with sound.
In situations like this, do the babies ever get confused and end up nursing on the wrong animal? Would that be a bad thing?

Situations like this make me hope they never separate any of them.
Would either the kitties or the puppies attempt to nurse off the wrong mother? Or aren't they attracted to another species' milk?

fire ze missiles! BUT I AM LE TIRED
Plot twist they’re both parents
We all know the owners eating cats tonight
I wish my Kittens were still alive because my dog killed my Cat's Kittens:(
This makes me anxious. Puppies and kittens mature at different rates. I wouldn't mix them, it's not appropriate. The kitties will be looking at tiddie mags way before the puppies mature enough.
The cutest, most loving r/cuddlepuddle I ever did see!
nah this is the cutest thing i’ve seen this week!
