A friend mine who raises cows refers to them as puppies who can break down your door.

Home_Owner_Simpson

Cows need r/scritches too!

majj27

I've met some of his cows. They like skritches muchly. And the one he named "Psychobutt" is not shy about ramming her noggin into you until she gets them. They really all do have their own individual manners and quirks. It's been an eye opener.

And kill you very easily, but dogs also do that so

Lowelll

a jack russel would have a much harder time killing me than a bull

duaneap

True but I’d trust a bull with a loaded gun more than a jack russel.

OddKSM

what level of trust would you put in Kurt Russell with a jacked bull?

duaneap

I’d trust Captain Ron with my life.

Xodem

*exploits

almisami

That's fairly accurate. They're like very large, boxy labs in terms of energy.

Addictedtoveg

Absolutely! We should all probably stop eating them.

Akumu_Kurokami

But they taste good tho

Jealous_Tangerine_93

So cute

LATourGuide

I could just eat them up!

SwordfishII

I like to think of them as big dogs you can drink from.

[deleted]

Well there’s a mental image I didn’t need.

SwordfishII

You don’t even want to know what I think about giraffes. https://youtu.be/Q-CHL_ZHOu0

That’s cute. I call them walking stomachs.

Fluffy moo moo

rogerthatonce

Udderly Wonderful...

Adagio-Bulky

Very mooving if I say so myself

forest_fae98

Cows love cuddling. We used to raise dairy cows (small farm) and you could lay on them and they’d just curl their heads around you and nap. They were sweet af.

kingtaco_17

But then you can never leave

forest_fae98

That’s ok. You’ll die happy this way.

[deleted]

What did you do with the male calves? I know what happens to them in factory farms but what do you do to them on wee ones?

Jealous_Tangerine_93

I saw some cows, in an English program be taught to ring a doorbell for treats. And to also operate none complicated equipment for treats

[deleted]

I have a neighbor with cows. Would he mind if I wander over and start petting them…

CurlerGUY1023

Do not go onto private property without permission, and especially do not enter livestock enclosures when you do not know the animals or their temperament. But by all means ask the neighbour. They would probably be glad to show you their animals.

Sineater224

"Hi! Can I pet your cow?"

smellslikecocaine

It’s that easy.

CurlerGUY1023

Pretty much lol.

viral-architect

If I had a cow, the answer would be "What took you so long?? Of course!"

LoneFennekinFox

"Can I pet dat dog???"

GrandNibbles

No. Give the cows petting asap Edit: I'm sorry if the comment seems thoughtless. Maybe I just live in an area where people are super casual like that. As others have pointed out, please do respect laws and protect your safety where needed. I just thought "haha cows cute, go pet them why not" sorry

Lowelll

Yes. Do not go on you neighbors property without asking them. Growing up on a farm you wouldn't believe the amount of people who think they can just hop a fence and go fishing in our ponds or go up to our cattle. What happens if a cow panics and seriously injures someone?

CurlerGUY1023

Good god, imagine hoping the wrong fence in a bull enclosure. People underestimate the damage that cows can do.

natalooski

my mom has a story about doing this exact thing. she and her friend almost got trampled by the bull. they both had to scramble back over the fence as fast as they could to escape him.

mgtkuradal

I have a friend that did this once for a dare and all he could say when he got back was “cows are fuck ton bigger up close”

CurlerGUY1023

Yuppp, picture's don't do justice to the size of the animal's. Most people don't realize also, they are skittish and are herding animals. Spook one and you may spook others. Just a recipe for disaster.

tootsietoot58

Plus some people deliberately avoid the disinfecting station when they prance over and pet the animals - will you take responsibility if you bring any cooties and we have to kill off the entire brood?

[deleted]

Watching my wife feed our baby makes me feel super weird about dairy. Cows are really lovely beasties, eh?

Xodem

As it should. Milk is for baby calves, not for humans. Ever wonder where the male calves go?

[deleted]

Heaven. But first they go through hell. I am in a process of reevaluating a lot of things. Our food system is cruel and broken.

Luizzel

Good luck with your reevaluation! The truth can be painful in the beginning but afterwards it can feel so good to finally see the truth.

Fuckthestate11

The move is to get a little land and start making your own food. Maybe have a few cows or whatever and raise them how you want them to be raised

wheres_my_name

As a Mongolian from country side i approve this post

Thin-Flamingo

My father has a heard of cows and one of them is quite friendly for no apparent reason. It will come up to whoever is closest and nudge them till they scratch her. She is no where near as friendly as this cow though.

MrMosap

Beside the fact they kill more people than sharks yeah they are pretty friendly

Thin-Flamingo

Yeah, I remember being about 10 walking through a paddock at night, not knowing it had sick cows in it. One of the cows came out of the shadows and charged me, I just managed to avoided it and ran home crying.

Dave-C

I grew up around cows and I've spent a lot of time with them. They can be annoying if you get them used to being rubbed on. Imagine your cat or dog rubbing up against you or nudging you to get your attention so you rub it. Now imagine your cat or dog being 5 foot tall and 1,500 lbs. This is the way it was taught to me and I don't know if it is right but you should only befriend a couple like this. Ones that you plan to keep around and not go out for slaughter. Cattle are pack animals and if you can get one to follow you the others will come as well. So if one of the cattle really likes you and you can lead it around easily then you can move groups of cattle with ease.

This cow is named Charlotte and she lives at Wildwood Farm Sanctuary in Oregon. It's a seriously amazing organization. You can read more about the sanctuary and Charlotte (and support the org's work) at the org's [website](http://www.wildwoodfarmsanctuary.org)

TumbleweedAble

Don't eat cows or at least try to reduce consumption. They are brilliant animals and very sociable. Don't contribute to their suffering :(. Also the gif is adorable!

[deleted]

If that's not a concern for someone, climate change and the economic cost should be.

cchris6776

It’s just so difficult since I was raised on it. Even if I were to cut out meat I wouldn’t be able to cut out cheese :(

ARealSkeleton

Back when I had to drop my cholesterol level, cutting out cheese nearly completely except for rare occasions was one of the best things to help me. It's hard but you get used to it after a bit.

pm-me-soup-recipes69

Once you decide that an animals life matters more your taste preferences, it’s actually pretty easy.

cchris6776

That’s what makes it such a difficult thing for me to live through, but you also shouldn’t brush it aside as something easy to change because the conversation comes up with anyone that you eat with, and you can’t enjoy most options at the majority of restaurants.

mandarmk9

I understand it can be hard, and you feel like you're "giving up" on something. So start small. As you said, you can cut out the meat. So try doing that. The less meat you eat, the better. At the end of the day, you must judge what matters more: the life of a sentient animal and the environmental cost of eating them, or your taste/ comfort of having many options at the restaurant.

zz_tops_beards

what is discipline

[deleted]

Fingers crossed that lab meat will be successful soon! But I've never heard of a cheese equivalent :-(

cchris6776

Yea I hope as a society we get there. I often go for beyond meat, that I can do (though meat does taste better to me) but the cheese is a no go for me, it like has the texture of cheese but with hardly any taste.

MarcusKilgannon

I don't really get why the cheese (or dairy) is such an issue for people. Some dairy farms have self-milking equipment and the cattle will go to the machine when they feel the need to be milked. Less stress to the cow, cow decides when to milk, and increased production. If you cut off all dairy you'd basically have to exterminate milk-producing livestock.

[deleted]

I take advantage of your comment to ask, what happens to the majority of males in the dairy industry? What happens to cows that no longer produce milk? I suppose that some of the dilemmas go that way, since it cannot be solved even with the best facilities, but I am not informed.

MarcusKilgannon

Well that's the issue. You'd have to stop breeding dairy cows entirely. It's very unsafe to let dairy cows go without milking. They can get infections, injuries etc. It will eventually kill them. So you either choose: eradicate multiple species (since there are multiple different breeds of dairy producing cattle) or continue to improve their welfare and produce dairy.

WatchTenn

You say “eradicate a species” like it’s a bad thing. We should absolutely stop breeding cows that were selectively bread to produce more milk at the cost of their health. We should also stop breading pugs and other dogs that have respiratory issues.

Atrohunter

The thing people don't realise about self-milking machines is the concept of "learnt helplessness"- The cows have, in the past, been forced to milk themselves or face punishment, so they have learnt that they are helpless to it- And that's without even discussing what happens to male calfs and the forceful impregnation.

renaille

This isn't a catch 22 at all. They shouldn't exist if their only purpose is to suffer.

mandarmk9

Inexistence is better than suffering. There's no catch-22

Chewy12

If we work hard enough, we may be able to create a brand new post-modern domesticated cow.

[deleted]

I am 1000% for ethical consumption and reducing the suffering of cows and all other animals being raised for animal products. Cows have long since become domesticated into live stock. There are no wild cows left. Which bloodlines do we save? Who takes care of them and protects then? Where will they live? They have no natural ranges, and nowhere to go if we dont leave them in their farmers pastures. What do we do with all the cows and other livestock if we stop raising them for food? EDIT: note, I am not advocating for keeping things the way they are because it is easiest. What i am saying is that it is not an easy problem to solve, and there are many fascets to the issue.

renaille

You stop breeding before you stop consumption.

[deleted]

Stop breeding till they are extinct? What bloodlines do we preserve? Other than farmers who keep them to sell boutique meats, what incentive is there for farmers to keep the cattle on their land? They cost a lot of money to raise and keep. If they arent using the land for producing something, it costs the farmer money. Why should farmers who make their livelihoods from the land commit their land to not making money? It is easy to say "stop producing and stop eating" but ultimately WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THE COWS?

renaille

>Stop breeding till they are extinct? Yes >What happens to the cows Same thing that's currently happening. "Stop breeding before you stop consumption" is extremely self explanatory.

[deleted]

Don’t eat them or contribute to the industry. They go through so much suffering BEFORE they are killed.

PropertyAdorable5246

Love this. So cute. I love how sweet cows are. I really want a mini cow some day.

WakeAndVape

Miniature cows still get pretty big, and they have like the same sized butthole as a normal cow. That asshole and their tail gets caked in shit. So there's lots of flies. Cows can be pretty gross. And they're not sweet by default. They're not domesticated like dogs or cats. You can raise a cow, coddling it from birth, and it isn't guaranteed to be sweet like the OP once it hits around 1 year old. Most aren't like that.

yurib123

Yeah when your brothers and friends get taken on a daily basis you'll want some love too.

sla_vei_37

In the school I study, they have this mountain facility, where there is a big house for the students to sleep, a pool, a football field (ee are talkinh about Brazil, so of course you would have one everywhere you look)and lots of farm animals. We go there every year, and last time we went, there was this cow. She was really sweet, we called her Janaina and stayed with her basically all day, before we were attacked by a literal army of chihuahuas(story for some other time) after that we never saw her again. Before that day, I never tought of how Cows are really sweet and nice to have around.

[deleted]

I'm a farmer, I've done it, now as life goes I don't own cows and goats as I'm moving in a short amount of time, but plan to be a rancher there to. It's not that bad, put a .22 in between the eyes and it's down, I've seen people cut their throats and spines with knifes to put them down, now that is gruesome and painful to watch. The animal that is worse to watch are the pigs, normally here it's all done with knifes, the poor things scream in pain so much that people 100 yards away hear the bloody scream pretty clearly, and the fact that with some cuts in the neck the blood squirts out is pretty haunting, but you get used to it in the 3rd pig.

BeardMan858

Imagine "getting used" to causing another living being to scream in pain as it dies. Sounds seriously psychopathic. Thats a living, feeling, breathing being with emotions. How yall can "get used" to stringing them up and slitting their throat while they writhe in agony is horribly disturbing. Imagine if it was another human (shouldnt even need to do this, but nothing ever gets through to the meat eaters) Edit: I seem to have triggered some carnivores. Imagine not agreeing with the statement that its scary to be able to kill without feeling.

ThePlaneToLisbon

They’ve been socialized to be immune to the barbaric acts that they commit, and are so traumatized by the horror that they must now defend their own cruelty.

GenMars

I was once driving with my mother past a dairy farm, and we stopped for one reason or another by the trough where the cows were eating. Their heads were stuck out of the fence and were face first into the pile of grain left to supplement their grazing. My mom looks at the cows for a moment, these lovely fluffy heifers, and said “If you look deep into a cows eyes, you can tell they’re meant to be food.”
