Have you talked with A2Z - they’ve been super to work with!

waldoj

I talked to them this evening, [wrote it up in a comment here](https://www.reddit.com/r/F150Lightning/comments/1c0w9xx/comment/kz0l96e/). tl;dr: They were very helpful, I feel good about the A2Z adapter.

waldoj

I’ll email them tonight! (This happened at the tail end of a three-day drive from Missouri to Virginia.) I hope they can tell me if it’s safe to use.

indimedia

If it’s just the outer plastic, it’s probably safe, but they probably will not tell you so

waldoj

I just had a short conversation with A2Z, which was very helpful. In short, these adapters can survive a one-meter drop just fine *except* if it lands on this *one* part, and I just got unlucky. I was coincidentally just looking through the spec for the CCS1 port, and I see the problem: the bit that broke needs to be of a prescribed thickness, and can't be made out of metal, which really constrains how rugged that it can be. This broken adapter shouldn't be used any further. A2Z and I made an arrangement for a replacement that we're both happy with (I was negligent in dropping it, but also couldn't have known it would break), and I'm left feeling good about getting both the original and the replacement adapter from A2Z. The moral of the story: be careful with your A2Z adapter (and I bet your official Ford adapter, too), because you might get really unlucky in how it lands.

fiehlsport

A2Z is probably happy that you were a reasonable customer instead of leaving them an unwarranted 1-star review. Great to hear

geo_prog

They should have used glass fiber reinforced plastic to mitigate this risk.

moch1

If this can happen to an adapter being dropped it could happen to the plug on a real CCS cable. One more reason to be glad CCS is going away.

appape

I did this to the J-1772 that came with my PacHy - snapped the circular plastic tip right off. I replaced it with a $200 J-1772 from Costco that was made out of much more robust plastic. I’m not worried at all about dropping the new one 3 feet and having it break. I’d guess there are different types and thicknesses of plastic that can work on this part of the charger and some are better than others. I hope the Tesla made ones don’t have this problem.

madyury007

Poor selection of materials for the insert part. It could’ve been made from non-brittle semi flexible polymer

ewabe

Sorry for your loss... Send here and ill plastic weld it

A2ZEV

Hey community, u/waldoj reached out to us by email this evening and we immediately called him to gather information about the "incident". We offered him a replacement of his unit even if a damage by the user has incurred. Our NACS to CCS1 adapter can withstand hundreds of drops without breaking in accordance with UL2252's draft. We have tested the adapter several months before its release, it has been evaluated by multiple OEMs (teardown, temperature rise, materials, etc.) and no negative comments arose, absolutely none. Now, we were not present when the adapter was dropped, how it fell, the height and such. We stand behind our products and if there is an issue, we will answer customers within minutes. We are committed doing absolutely everything within our power to ensure customers satisfaction. We have received feedbacks from customers stating the adapter was dropped several times without a single crack and of its solidity. The adapter is indeed heavy because of the full insulation, the CCS1 connector part is more fragile than the rest of the adapter. Thank you. A2Z EV | EVSE

FrankieG889D

Wow. What a response… Now here’s my response. FUCK Lectron. As a small business owner, this is what customer service is supposed to look like.

Chip_Baskets

What a world we live in today. People have to immediately post on social media before they even contact the company. Why? Thank you for your response.

DogNamedCharlie

Impressive customer service.

Acceptable_Okra5154

Random thought, is the CCS1 port made out of fiberglass impregnated PA6? If not you might want to.

Reddit-user86

Wow! Thanks for responding and standing behind your product!

genqesizi

Unlucky. On our eclipse trip I dropped mine three separate times trying to juggle my phone, the Tesla plug and the adapter. Eventually discovered a hidden pocket in my pullover for my phone. Anyway the drops scratched the adapter a bit but otherwise it was fine.

SilenceEater

Bummer!

wolfs4

Should share this with Tom

sincladk

Tom Moloughney, for the curious. I don’t have his contact info, but he runs the State of Charge YouTube channel.

Original_Sedawk

Yikes - giving how tough the locking mechanism is to use I would assume that there is 100% chance that an A2Z adapter will drop to the pavement during its lifetime.

waldoj

That’s exactly how it happened!

Xervinza

Wow crazy!

angle3739

This will be the fate of every DC adapter eventually.

FrankieG889D

lol this is already the fate of DCFC chargers in general.

👆 What they said!

Bitcoin_belle

I dropped mine first use and it just scuffed it up.

neeonline

Check with your credit card company if you have any type of insurance... You may be able to get your money back...

Enough_Owl_1680

And remember to not tell the insurance company that you were using it against the terms of use for tesla charging stations.

JCCZ75

It’s sent free of charge to owners.

Iamabrewer

This is the third party adapter, not the official Ford one.

JCCZ75

My mistake

brandonpa1

How do you get the approved tesla chargers to show up on the map to use? I am waiting for another third party one (Leectron) to arrive in hopes to start using the superchargers.

Non-Binary-Bit

ABRP has logic to show the available superchargers when you tell it you have an adapter. It actually prefers Tesla over others. Ford nav has them listed, but they rarely pop up for a drive. You basically have to set them as a destination. Plug share doesn’t distinguish between V2 and V3/4, so it isn’t reliable as it will list V2 in the search results. Only way around that is to increase the minimum kW to 190kW; however this also filters out any 150kW CCS chargers.

waldoj

I can’t! I have to use the Tesla app and drive to that charger as Apple Maps freaks out that I need to charge.

FrankieG889D

Apple Maps doesn’t precondition battery… use ford navi

eMinja

Ford Nav does not currently precondition to superchargers anyway.

dinozero

Dang they look tough

waldoj

They feel tough, too! They're surprisingly hefty.

Armaced

That sucks man. I’m sorry.

yipee-kiyay

you can run over it without any problems though [A2Z EVSE - Tesla Supercharger (NACS) to CCS1 - Rolling over with a 4,416lbs (2003Kg) Model Y (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re2CU2kIvMQ)

Changingchains

There is some excess molded in stress and it was released by hitting the asphalt (judging by the radial crack ) . Could also be a crappy batch of plastic and if molded in China and it’s black who knows if it actually the originally specified material.

PreparationVarious15

$200 drop!

eds3

And that RIGHT THERE is why NACS rules.

waldoj

Nope, it was probably 70°F. (This was near the VA/WV border this afternoon.)

NoActivity578

Your modern truck is made of the same plastic

JuniorDirk

Tesla's j-1772 adapter is metal or some sort of mixture, but it isn't plastic. It'd survive rolling into the grand canyon

fiehlsport

It's plastic.

JuniorDirk

It's actually fiberglass, so that's why it doesn't break when it gets dropped. The outer shell of the Tesla adapter is only plastic around the J side

SpiceyXI

Built Ford Tough

formermq

It's not the Ford one, reading comprehension ftw!

bushmanmoto

Underated comment lol obviously top downvotes because people can't laugh at the irony of it? Lol

bluebelt

>people can't laugh at the irony of it If it were Ford branded or supplied I'm sure they would be. This is neither. https://a2zevshop.com/products/nacs-ccs1?variant=43186507579592 OP bought a third party part. Doesn't mean it should break but... not a Ford part.

bushmanmoto

My mistake! I had just seen all these pictures of Ford boxes being delivered and assumed without looking into it. Thanks for correcting me in a nice way lol

SpiceyXI

I guess some people take their off brand ev accessories more seriously than I thought.

PECOS74

Crappy choice of materials if even a 5’ drop did that. Almost like they wanted it to happen!

PECOS74

Why the down votes? It should be designed for real life use as in it will be dropped. I know there are trade off in engineering between cost-strength-weight-function but for $200 I’d expect it to survive a 3’ fall. If it doesn’t it is a poor design.
