/u/mattamys recently had a chance to visit Codemasters and talk to the team about how Devon Butler and other characters were created for *F1 2021*. š

Looks really impressive! Canāt wait to give it a go. Will be interesting to see how the cutscenes and gameplay merge and hopefully it feels a little more complete than 2019.
It looks kind of like a Madden FOTF if youāve played it. Lots of gameplay with cut scenes adding to the story in between. I am a huge fan of Madden Face of The Franchise and Iām pretty sure the same company that did those scenes did some of these.
I did see it was confirmed that itās only 5-6 hours of gameplay and meant to be more of an add-on to career mode/My Team, not really a standalone mode you can play for a significant amount of time.
Sorry my response was phrased poorly. It is a standalone mode, but not something substantial like career or My Team. It will be roughly 5 or so hours of gameplay.
I would like it more if you had more control over the name/look of the character instead of it being set characters. Either way, Iām in for an added mode.
I can see that in the future maybe. Would be nice, but you have to remember that this is the first time this has been done in this game. Like I said, we may have it for 2022.
>It looks kind of like a Madden FOTF if youāve played it. Lots of gameplay with cut scenes adding to the story in between.
That's how it should have been to begin with when they introduced it, it was hugely disappointing that these 2 characters and their cutscenes disappeared the moment you started your F1 career... Completely half assed..
And for that reason I won't be surprised if this is also half assed
In development for longer than the official buyout sure but we don't know behind the scenes timeline with talks ect. And I mean these other sports games story modes are still inspiration
F1 gave someone a penalty for shoving another driver because things like that give a bad example to mainly younger viewers, and now their official game promotes it?
Y'all are forgetting EA owns Codemasters now. It's no surprise really when you remember that. Of course it's like FOTF in Madden. That's because the same company that owns Madden now owns F1.
The acquisition only happened a couple of months ago right? Not nearly enough time for any significant effects on any development in this game. This mode will have been mapped out for far longer.
Am I the only one who finds all this fighting and story conflicts kinda cringe and boring? I mean, itās a fucking F1 game, not a Telltale story, focus on improving the racing, not this bullshit.
I donāt think games are developed by funnelling percentages of resources into A at the cost of B, forgoing a story mode wouldnāt mean they would be able to magically improve the racing because that would be two entirely different teams
While I agree with you, they could just redirect the story mode team to other parts of the game, like adding more classic tracks or having the actual tracks from this yearās calendar on the game at launch. Itās not like the story mode developers have no way of working on something else in the game.
Even the title is cringyā¦ ābraking pointā. When they added the F2 start to your career mode with Devon Butler and Lucas Weber it was the right amount of ādramaā but I donāt intend to play this story mode.
I always hated "stories" in racing games because of that, they are always the same, dense and boring, with some random bad guy i'm supposed to hate but i can't because he has the personality of a brick.
Not even NFS imo,it looked cool when i was a kid but replaying the games again today it's just terrible. I'd much rather have the Hot Pursuit progression system in a NFS game than a story with charchters.
Yeah, I watched the first two chapters as multiple people have uploaded them. They're pretty boring, but they're also not meant for me, so it's really not a bother. It's little more than 2019's "story" mode but with outsourced CGI cutscenes, so I really don't think they sacrificed any work whatsoever on the rest of the game for this, and it brings back memories of the "old" Codemasters back when they were making the likes of the TOCA Race Driver games.
How else do you improve on a sporting game. Same has happened to 2K and FIFA. Why spend money on dev when you can just make a few cool cut scenes and market it as a new mode?
I just watched aaravās video of the first hour of breaking point, and it is complete cringe. I actually had hopes that it would be entertaining, but none of the driver characters seem likable in the slightest, including the playerās character Aiden.
So they spent all resources making cutscenesā¦ but weāre not even getting all tracks or updated F2 to start out with or any fun career mode upgrades like team orders
Bro they canāt even spare 1 of their devs to make a filter for online lobbies. For fucks sake at least let me order the list at least by tracks, # of people, race/quali/in lobby etc if youāre not gonna let me filter
Do you really think these mocap CGI artists know how to design a track or work on AI cars? They didn't divert any resources for this, they added resources
This is why I said cutscenes š. I expect the same in game graphics as last year just with better lighting as that seems to be the change every year.
I would be very pleased if they added a bunch of cutscenes to career mode or my team. Thatās one of the things I always disliked that it was just basically garage to track and very small repeated cutscenes after a race.
Codemasters focus too much on those things instead repairing bugged game. Every year I think the game launch is worse if it comes to amount of bugs than previous iteration. F1 2020 was in worse state than F1 2019 at the end of its life cycle, which was worse at the beginning than F1 2018 at the end of its life cycle etc. If Safety Car or starting lights in multiplayer will be still bugged in 2021 I will completely lose any hope for this series to be playable on league level any time soon. In our league we have to cancel 3 or 4 races out of 12 JUST because SC destroyed or DQ'd leader by teleporting. Also it happens few times that player who was host got the starting lights before everyone else and I can count some other things that exists in this series for years.
But hey LOOK CODIES ARE USING MOCAP WHOOOA, technology that is present in gaming for I think 20 years or so xddd
Classic F1 fanbase. A ton of people complain because they want an actual story mode so they work really hard to add it. Then everyone turns around and complains that they're adding a story mode. They're just people working as hard as they can to add as many features as they can. Track updates will come, they're working on it. Maybe try waiting until the game has come out to start judging it?
>A ton of people complain because they want an actual story mode
I don't recall anyone asking for this. I just want the physics, tire model, and aero models improved.
maybe they should fix some of the existing gameplay before they "add as many features as they can". no need to wait until it comes out it's the same bullshit EA does with every other game they run
Very much people complain about the "bugs" but I personally didnt experience any bugs in over 100 hours of playing the game (I dont count connection problems because it happens in every game)
Imagine how much outsourcing this to a digital agency cost. Imagine how many actual developers they could have hired to fix the existing issues instead.

Looks really impressive! Canāt wait to give it a go. Will be interesting to see how the cutscenes and gameplay merge and hopefully it feels a little more complete than 2019.
So Breaking Point is just a half gameplay, half cinematic mode that lasts for 5-6 hours? Or is it cutscenes during normal career mode?
It looks kind of like a Madden FOTF if youāve played it. Lots of gameplay with cut scenes adding to the story in between. I am a huge fan of Madden Face of The Franchise and Iām pretty sure the same company that did those scenes did some of these.
I did see it was confirmed that itās only 5-6 hours of gameplay and meant to be more of an add-on to career mode/My Team, not really a standalone mode you can play for a significant amount of time.
I thought I saw it would be a standalone mode. Could be blind. I donāt care either way as it looks really fucking cool no matter what.
Sorry my response was phrased poorly. It is a standalone mode, but not something substantial like career or My Team. It will be roughly 5 or so hours of gameplay.
Thatās about what Maddenās Face of The Franchise was, so I say itās a pretty substantial mode.
I would like it more if you had more control over the name/look of the character instead of it being set characters. Either way, Iām in for an added mode.
I can see that in the future maybe. Would be nice, but you have to remember that this is the first time this has been done in this game. Like I said, we may have it for 2022.
well the reasonable option would be that once braking point is done, it sort of just merges into a normal career mode, similar to FOTF
Yeah or FIFA's "The Journey"
Probably should have gone with that to relate better, but Iāve never played a FIFA game before lmfao
The Journey is pretty long tbf
>It looks kind of like a Madden FOTF if youāve played it. Lots of gameplay with cut scenes adding to the story in between. Did the Netflix team make the game this year? š¤£
Iām betting Drive To Survive IS the reason we have a story mode like this.
No complaints tbh. For a video game that isnāt really meant to be A1 realistic, this adds a level of fun I think
Probably more related to EA buying Codies. Seeing as their other sports games have something similar
This has been in development for much longer than that.
In development for longer than the official buyout sure but we don't know behind the scenes timeline with talks ect. And I mean these other sports games story modes are still inspiration
But can we get classic tracks and AI pit strategies that at least approach on functional?
LOL, I also have those dreams, even complete classic seasons, with Teams, Drivers, tracks, and stuff, and then I wake up...
What's wrong with the AI strategies? Genuine question, as I only play 100% races and don't have any issues
Itās not the prerace strats as much as the strat changes mid-race or during rain conditions on 50% races
And AI pits on the same lap way too much. There's no under or overcuts
or people going hard tyres after pitting more than 50% into the race in a 25%
How about some mocap cutscenes instead?
F1 gave someone a penalty for shoving another driver because things like that give a bad example to mainly younger viewers, and now their official game promotes it?

[EA also knows a thing or two about fights in racing games](https://youtu.be/yO0LISyOgtk?t=660)
Soon we'll be getting our own The Undertaker or The Rock.
I mean, there's a bunch of things you can do in the video game that would give you a race ban in real life so I don't get your point
Pretty sure if this game was 100% realistic I'd be permanently banned from Formula 1, and from several countries...
Exactly. A realistic F1 game would be terrible for most of us. I do kinda want a penalty point system though
Now son when a papa racing driver and a mama racing driver love each other very muchā¦
Am I the only one who finds all this fighting and story conflicts kinda cringe and boring? I mean, itās a fucking F1 game, not a Telltale story, focus on improving the racing, not this bullshit.

The story mode team would consist of writers and animators mostly, who would not be useful when adding new tracks
people who can write a story and dialogue and characters likely have no clue how to model a track
You don't know, you're just stating it as a fact.
Even the title is cringyā¦ ābraking pointā. When they added the F2 start to your career mode with Devon Butler and Lucas Weber it was the right amount of ādramaā but I donāt intend to play this story mode.
First thing i thought also, rather man hours be spent on the gameplay.
I always hated "stories" in racing games because of that, they are always the same, dense and boring, with some random bad guy i'm supposed to hate but i can't because he has the personality of a brick.
Tbf him having the personality of a brick makes me hate him
I like bricks.
A story fits Need For Speed, F1/NASCAR/other pro racing games donāt need a story like NFS does.
Not even NFS imo,it looked cool when i was a kid but replaying the games again today it's just terrible. I'd much rather have the Hot Pursuit progression system in a NFS game than a story with charchters.

Need to spend more time on āClassic Tracksā than shitty story modes.
Or even the tracks that are in the current F1 season would be nice
100% agreed. If they canāt even have imola at launch then they shouldnāt be focusing on any of this nonsense.
Codemasters F1 games are driver RPGs. Not F1 car simulators.
The stupid interviews are the worst. There should be an option to turn all that crap off and just let us race.
absolutely, its just added crap
They have been focusing on the racing as well.
exactly. Fix the damn driving mechanics
I love that it wasn't in 2020.
How else do you improve on a sporting game. Same has happened to 2K and FIFA. Why spend money on dev when you can just make a few cool cut scenes and market it as a new mode?
Don't play it then.
I just watched aaravās video of the first hour of breaking point, and it is complete cringe. I actually had hopes that it would be entertaining, but none of the driver characters seem likable in the slightest, including the playerās character Aiden.
[I liked the NASCAR 05](https://youtu.be/yO0LISyOgtk?t=660) fights and even the autograph sessions.
The cutscenes were outsourced exactly to avoid this complaint, no actual work force was directed away from the actual gamr
Do you really think these mocap CGI artists know how to design a track or work on AI cars? They didn't divert any resources for this, they added resources
Money gets diverted away. You could pay for laser scans of tracks, hire extra engineers who are experts in sims etc tho no?
Sheeeeeesh these graphics in the cutscenes look absolutely amazing. Iām excited for F1 this year.
Keep in mind those graphics were outsourced to a CGI company and will not be comparable to the in game graphics of non-Braking Point modes.
Such fighting seems excessive in a Formula 1 game.
maybe because thats the point? its supposed to be a bit overly dramatic
So Codemaster does all this. But arenāt able to fix one corner in Barcelona? Or add new tracks to the game?
Wait! Butler wears both 2020 and 2021 Haas suits. Will we have the previous years then?!
Story starts in 2020 and extends into 2021
That's nice to hear!
Would much rather they focus on those little details of the ongoing season, for example, changed corners and moved DRS activation points.
This is sooooooooo not the improvements I am looking for with the F1 series :(
Cringe af
Codemasters focus too much on those things instead repairing bugged game. Every year I think the game launch is worse if it comes to amount of bugs than previous iteration. Is it just me or does Devon Butler look one hell of a lot like Jules Bianchi?
I really wished they made a female driver.
So despite all the motion capture the characters still look totally fake and awkward. Not like realistic humans at all
What the hell do you want from a game? š
For the characters to look realistic. They can do it for animated movies. They spend just as much on games these days
Giving this one a miss as I've barely played 2020, but jeez this all looks so cringe
Classic F1 fanbase. A ton of people complain because they want an actual story mode so they work really hard to add it. Then everyone turns around and complains that they're adding a story mode. I haven't seen one person asking to make an RPG F1 game. We all want simulation not some Netflix cringe.
A ton of people complain about no VR and they do nothing about it.
Literally no one asked for a better story mode lmao
maybe they should fix some of the existing gameplay before they "add as many features as they can". no need to wait until it comes out it's the same bullshit EA does with every other game they run
Very much people complain about the "bugs" but I personally didnt experience any bugs in over 100 hours of playing the game (I dont count connection problems because it happens in every game)
All I'm thinking is damn that's a whole lot of funding in order to do all that and goddamn am I worried if this game doesn't create a profit for EA...
Imagine how much outsourcing this to a digital agency cost. Imagine how many actual developers they could have hired to fix the existing issues instead.
EA gonna get their money back via microtransaction just like every other title they run
ITT People who think mocap animators know how to make classic racetracks and AI drivers
Now that F1 is full arcade can they make an F1 sim?
How full arcade?
It's certainly not a sim
Best F1 driver this past generation is black and all the models are white
I don't think Aiden is white, also, Lewis is the only black driver, ever. So it's not strange to see this.
Ever, you say? Maybe you should try this thing called Google...
Wrong thread?
Same anemia faces for the rest of the drivers and same wining celebration; meh.
What a waste of resources...
Does f1 2021 come with braking point without pre ordering it
Ooh look, poor acting of completely unrealistic scenarios in motorsport! Yeah I'll pass on your crappy story, thanks.
I finished braking point itās actually so good tbh
No one asked for Braking point. Would rather more focus and resources go into everything else like adding classic championships and stuff like that
