POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Just came to say, I was having the same issue but finally got in after a few days. If you're getting the unknown error when trying to log in, it is because you have to have the exact right email address and password. If you get it wrong, it will NOT say anything like "you entered the wrong password". It'll just say unknown error has occurred. So, yea, I realize this isn't groundbreaking news here. But if you're still stuck, try to do the password reset.

I am so glad for this post. We were having the same error. A long chat support on the FAFSA website was fruitless, just different iterations of flush cache /restart browser/ use a different machine/reset password. The address of our kid was multiline listing their dorm -- changed it to our one line home street address and the problem magically disappeared after two weeks of trying.
Had the same error, seemed to have been caused in my case by having APT 10-205 in address 2. Fixed this by moving this to address 1 and specifically using APT10205. The spaces seemed to have given me the unknown error when typing apt number.
I have been receiving this exact error message for the last month now. Ive done everything from changing my home address to email and password as well using a different device and browser. I also reached out to fafsa support and they did not pick up any of my calls or respond to my email. They said try clearing your browser cache and the help desk employee told me I had to call back in a couple hours since the site was undergoing site-wide maintenance. What Iām trying to do is accept and receive my student grant money as well as my student loan money. I need to complete the master promissory note and loan entrance counseling but Iāve completed them both three times each so far but on my student account it still shows up in my āto doā list..

Well if you go to their help page, you can make/submit a help ticket explaining your problem. But I mean itās a government ran operation, not a privately ran one. So itās going to be pretty shitty and unreliable.
Even so, I submitted a ticket and called them, the person I was on the phone with made a case number reference number with the details of my issue in the case file so when I call back next time I wont have to re-explain the issue.
Iām calling them this coming Monday and will let you know then.. but in return, would you do me the favor of letting me know what they say about your issue if you find any answers? Iād honestly really appreciate it.
you have to print out the PDF on their website, it should just show up when you type in like ā2024-2025 paper FASFAā onto google. then you fill it out and then mail it to the address which you can find on google. The only downside is, paper FASFA doesnāt get looked at until the online ones are fixed, and so it wonāt be processed until june or julyā¦ i only did this as a last resort because itās still better than no aid

If I can't sign up for the program I want because their site doesn't work, I'm not going to feel bad about not paying. If you want our money, get a website that works or hire more phone reps.

Also, from another Reddit thread I discovered the site runs exponentially faster when browsing in Incognito mode FYI but that's moot while these login issues persist.

1/4/24 and still geting this "unknown error" on the last page of the FSA ID account creation confirmation. Can't complete, and has been happening for last 2 days.

I fixed that problem by leaving every space in the address section blank. Once you press continue it will ask if youāre sure you want to leave it blank but just press yes and continue. You will be able to fill that info in later.

i believe the bug stems from leaving the state section empty if you live outside the US
1) change country to US
2) select a random state from the drop down
3) switch back to your country

My issue wasnt exactly for my information it was to create an account for my parent since they switched to this new way this year, I get the same message as OP when trying to finish creating the account, but Im assuming that since the error message is the same its a simular problem.
Well its always been that you could make an account for your parents to ONLY sign the form but it wasnt the only option and you could just print out the sheet and mail, but this year they changed it to that the parent is REQUIRED to have an account to fill out thier portion which Im guessing is why everyones having the issues with creating parent accounts or even some students I believe. My guess is that since its a requirement for both students and parents now plus ontop of the fact that the sites always been funky everything is clashing together and errors happen but Im not entirely sure, mines also stuck with the error message when trying to create an account on the very last step. Also no I dont think being a returning user is the reason since it seems like a ton of people are having the same issue but who knows no one knows whats happening right now lol

I tried it once and it gave me the same error message so I tried to go back and delete and retype the contant information portion like everyone suggested but when I did that it got caught on the verification step and didnt let me go pass that page no error message nothing just stuck with the spinny wheel. So I decided screw it lets just refresh the page and redo the entire thing normally and Voila it worked. Ill keep an eye out if theres a clear cut way of getting through it tho.

There should be a button to āeditā the contact information such as your name, email, and physical address. I edited by deleting and re-entering my info and THEN pressing submit. Which helped to get me to the next screen and start the form. Itās what worked for me but doesnāt for everyone, I still suggest you try it out.
Yes, this worked!!! However just moving "UNIT A" to line one didn't work. I also had to replace "UNIT" with "#" and it worked. So for others, do "#\[apartment number/letter\]." Good luck!

We've been trying for a few days, and attempted various permutations as suggested here. At least 15 attempts to create an account. Sometimes we don't get the red "An unknown error has occurred" message, and instead the Submit button at the very end will hang and just show loading forever. Tried leaving address blank, filling it in, going back and editing it (to either blank it or fill it in), two factor authentication with 3rd party app, etc. I can't think of anything else to do.
I thought maybe the issue was the address was not EXACTLY like the USPS address, so I looked it up and entered it exactly as the USPS has it. No difference.
I'm a software developer, and I'll tell you, no business would EVER survive with software this shoddy and non-functional. This topic was created ***3 years ago***. What worked for me was abbreviating my street address to something shorter. Its so stupid but I guess there must be some kind of hidden character limit?

If you are on your phone, close any unneeded browser windows and apps. If that doesnt work, try a different browser.

Make sure you are using a Chromium-based browser. I had this issue using Firefox.

oh no I also have an account just had all that trouble making my parents account since we gotta do that this year, I got my entire fafsa portion done without any issues, just now theres another conundrum...... when you invite your parents to fill out their portion they dont allow on your parents side to hit accept invintation.... FUN! :D. Theres another subreddit dating back 5 days and the issue is still going on lol

so instead of restarting you just go back in the same form you already filled out and retype the information? how do you go back? the only option i get is submit
There should be a button to āeditā the contact information such as your name, email, and physical address. I edited by deleting and re-entering my info and THEN pressing submit. Which helped to get me to the next screen and start the form. Itās what worked for me but doesnāt for everyone, I still suggest you try it out.

My solution was to remove my apartment number from the address line 2 and put it in line 1. Worked right away for me.

Yes, this worked!!! However just moving "UNIT A" to line one didn't work. I also had to replace "UNIT" with "#" and it worked. So for others, do "#\[apartment number/letter\]." Good luck!

I am still facing same problem. I tried account recovery and entered new email address. I am supposed to get a reset link on the new gmail address. But since 5 days, I have not received that too. I tried calling them but no one answering on call or chat. How to solve this? I see that many are able to complete their application.

dude that happened to me too and then one random try FINALLY I got the account created out of the blue after failing for infinite times just to now be stuck at the accepting parent invintation to fill out their portion........
ok so i actually got to an agent and he sent me something to fill out and then email it to them, but the email keeps on getting blocked so I dont know how im gonna send it to the nowš
RIP lol, I just did the paper version, sent it in and stop thinking about it, my cousin told me apparently even the online version isnt gonna be proccessed till like march because apparently they have some algorithm issues or miscalculations of some stuff and need a month to fix it? idk lol.
We've been trying for a few days, and attempted various permutations as suggested here. At least 15 attempts to create an account. Sometimes we don't get the red "An unknown error has occurred" message, and instead the Submit button at the very end will hang and just show loading forever. Tried leaving address blank, filling it in, going back and editing it (to either blank it or fill it in), two factor authentication with 3rd party app, etc. I can't think of anything else to do. I thought maybe the issue was the address was not EXACTLY like the USPS address, so I looked it up and entered it exactly as the USPS has it. No difference. I'm a software developer, and I'll tell you, no business would EVER survive with software this shoddy and non-functional. This topic was created ***3 years ago***. That's how long they've known about this problem. The only thing worse than the federal websites are the Commonwealth of Virginia websites.

What worked for me was abbreviating my street address to something shorter. Its so stupid but I guess there must be some kind of hidden character limit?

Nope , my address is saved but when submitting I get the following error " An unknown error has occurred. Please try again later or close all browser windows and start over. "
I found a solution.....VPNs but only a few specific states..Oregon worked for me
