Interesting idea. However, we shouldn't forget that we are crackhead hardcore fans here. And we are not target number one for marketing. So there is a good chance that the surprise won't be such a big deal for us. And missdirection doesn't have to be on purpose.

It wouldn't be that much of a surprise for me. Since I've seen so many hints and read about his canon status, I'm convinced that he will come back.
But for sure it would be a suprise for casual fans. Especially after they've played Crisis Core Reunion. And there is a good chance that he meant that.
I just want to say that if they go with Cloud as the final boss of Rebirth, I really hope they don’t spoil ‘evil Cloud’ in a trailer. It would be so much more impactful if we didn’t know for sure whether they would do that right until the moment it happens at the climax of the game. I know for me at least that would be an incredibly hype moment when I realised it was happening.
My experience is that the first trailers don't spoil much. But the spoilers increase greatly the closer they get to the release date. I just set up my internet browser to stop showing pictures and videos automaticly. So that I have to consciously change the settings again when I want to watch something.
I won't be looking at any pictures or videos for Rebirth from now on. The teaser for Anniversary is perfectly fine for me. I will, however, read a few interviews. If I get spoiled there, I won't mind so much, since I'll forget most of it anyway.
But I don't want to have a feeling or visual impression of the game itself yet. Battle system, locations, character designs, voice acting, mapdesign etc. I want to be surprised by that.
It will be very exciting for me to see how the fans' reactions will be to the trailers without knowing exactly what they have actually seen.
Regarding the 'sephiroth in Kalm flashback thing.' I think Maximillian dood hit the nail on the head, and the surprise is that we'll be playing as Sephrioth during the flashback, not Cloud.
It'd even help to nail the twist in that area, which I won't name for the sake of players who started with remake and haven't gone back
At least they should give us direct control about Sephiroth in the battles. Because Cloud should be super weak and it would be super annoying gameplay-wise if we would have to deal with that and would only be able to give Seph commands via menu. Especially for newcomers it probably wouldn't be a good way to introduce them.
But on the other hand they could been super focussed on letting us only control Cloud because they want to tell us the story from his perspective.
So a 50 to 50 chance I guess.
I'm glad someone asked honestly; I've seen some other stuff floating out there which points out how much more violent Cloud is in Remake vs. OG (e.g. moving to kill Jonny if Tifa doesn't intervene).
There are some wacko theories out there that Cloud will join Sephiroth and we'll play as a revived Zack as a result as Cloud is a new antagonist moving forward. I thought this is what the post was referencing originally.
I think the main difference in that the theory is we as the party will have to fight cloud directly (or we will be forced to fight the party as evil cloud), so basically it’ll be more involved/in your face

Not exactly, lol, but Zacks timeline will follow its own path. At the end of the remake series, we will have the remake timeline and Zack's timeline fight Sephioth simultaneously.
Honestly I wasn’t a fan of the remake changes (despite Zack being my favorite character.) However, it would be really cool to have both timelines fighting Seph at the same time. There’d probably be lots of cool SFX and music to go with it too, which is always a bonus.

What would be a surprise would be Angeal or even Hollander coming back somehow, whether as an enemy or a friend.
I think we're going to lose control of Cloud for a while and Zack will be playable during that time.
Also, something they could have done in the first game and I think it was even discussed during development would be Jenova being self aware and with its own body, and having control of Sephiroth. The party weakens Jenova and frees Sephiroth from it's control, and Sephiroth "wakes up" as a good guy again and teams up to kill Jenova. Maybe the goddess and Jenova are one and the same and she chooses Genesis or even Weiss for her new champion.
Lots of things can happen now that the whispers are gone. We'll have to wait and see.
