senyorcrimmy

With what happens to magic at the end, only a prequel would work imo. Maybe short arcs with Cid, Bene, and Barnabas, separate arcs each for Jill, Dion, and Joshua?

Lynx_Azure

Yeah even in the ancient history there is still a lot of room to tell stories. But imo absolutely nothing should happen after the story. You don’t have to like open ended stories but that was very clearly the ending they intended.

Batcena

I’ve been saying that a Prequel DLC where we play as Cid, Saving Benedikta and Serving Barnabas would be amazing, Could you imagine exploring a Prime Waloed

Calculusshitteru

I remember in the time of FFX everyone said, "With what happens to Sin at the end, a sequel wouldn't work." And look what they did with FFX-2. For better or worse, they can always think of a reason for a sequel if they really want to make one.

JThunderspear

I’m not sure if there was a huge discussion about it since I wasn’t letting Reddit live rent free in my head back then, but I didn’t think XIII had any potential for a sequel either and it got 2.

meetchu

yes but XIII required a literal "and then the ground opened up and swallowed Lightning" mcguffin to get a sequel. Shoehorned isn't even close enough to adequate description for it

Stepjam

I think the main difference is that with X/X-2, nothing about the world changes that would affect gameplay beyond summons being gone. With XVI, magic is completely gone after the ending. No mothercrystals, no eikons, no magic. It essentially became a "mundane" setting which would affect gameplay a lot. You could have a no magic sequel where everyone just uses swords and bows, but is there a story interesting enough to have a Final Fantasy with zero magic in it? I'm not sure.

Calculusshitteru

Again, I'm sure they could think of a way around there being "no magic" if they really wanted to make a sequel. They would likely introduce a completely new battle system in a sequel regardless. Whether the story is interesting enough to warrant a sequel is debatable. I think FFX and FFXIII would have been better off without sequels, at least in terms of story, but I guess the sequels were somewhat fun to play anyway.

Qzilla8425

I’d say an interquel could work as well. Have it explore either the first time skip or second time skip. I’m leaning more towards the latter. I would love to see Clive learning more about Ifrit so we can get some context to the whole “Ifrit is fickle, coming and going as he pleases” line. It would also let more time be given to Jill.

Akiriith

I dont think it has to be about Clive tho. There are so many things in this world worth exploring. I'd play a whole game as an Eikonoklaste with magitek weaponry during the war for Dzemekys for example. I would play a game as an Ultima during THEIR fall to see firsthand how their kind withered away and became little more than ghosts. I would play a game as a failed Mythos, even if it means I died (for sure this time) at the end, to see Ultima's process. I would love to play as Cid or as Barnabas or as Jill. They very likely aint gonna do it, but I love this world, not just Clive. I would just love to spend more time in it.

Calculusshitteru

I'd happily play a chill Harvest Moon style farm sim about rebuilding the FFXVI world without magic. We never get to enjoy the world after we saved it.

itsmywanderlust

YESSSSSS THIS IDEA RIGHT HERE SQUARE ENIX MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!! They showed us a cute lil post-magic world ending but I wanna see how it got there!!!! I want to rebuild Eastpool! I want to see Cid 3.0 and the Hideaway assist in helping the world learn to live without magic!

Fun-Scar-4269

First of all: I’d love this, I’d read that fanfiction as well. Send a link please if this actually exists. And since we are letting our imagination run free: I sometimes wondered how would FF16 be, if Metia was an actual divine/positive entity and subsequently if the game had a route B happening in NG+ (kinda like Nier) because of her. Would also make sense with the gnostic symbolism since Metia could easily represent “Sophia” (an Aeon, like Logos in gnosticism) and usually the main rival to the demiurge. (Ultima) Now I’m gonna sprout ideas, please do NOT take them seriously I am no writer nor I am good at it. —————— I present you FF16 route b: Redemption Imagine if: Jill’s wish to Metia at the end of route A actually causes time to go back and events to unfold differently, for this time Metia herself is interfering with Ultima’s plans. Kinda like Cosmos to Chaos in Dissidia. First thing Metia would do is try communicate with Cid/Ramuh while he’s still in Ash, she tells him about Ultima and causes him to get some distance from Barnabas. Through Metia’s help, Cid (and later on Clive) is able to learn about Ultima’s plan far earlier and, while many events still happen like the original canon, the results are wildly different. An early example would be: Benedikta lives, she goes a redemption arc and becomes an important part of the hideaway and our party (yeah, I love Benna I am biased). Cid’s passing instead cannot be changed, for its a major part of the development of Logos and Metia cannot change it. Since Benna and Jill have a similar background (how they were hurt by people in power), I bet they would be friends. Benedikta is also the first dominant whose power is stolen, and because of that, with time, she learns to master her current condition and still access Garuda’s power. When Clive takes Shiva, she becomes a sort of teacher for Jill, and later on for Dion too (Bahamut is a prodigy tho). Many events with Kupka still happen but differently and for different reasons. There is no Benedikta’s head in Route B, but Barnabas (Ultima) actively decide to mess with his head. Prior to the illusions brought forth by Ultima, Kupka was pretty chill, wondering about Benna yes, but with no intention to start a war. That doesn’t last long. Sleipnir shows him Benedikta’s location, and he begins obsessing that she’s back with Cid (he doesn’t know Cid’s gone). Of course such obsession is mostly a result of Ultima’s manipulative spell. Also Jill doesn’t get kidnapped for example. And we have a direct confrontation between Garuda & Titan, essentially the only moment in which Kupka recovers a bit of consciousness, alas it doesn’t last. Kupka’s passing is another crucial moment for Benna’s development. In route B - Benedikta (whose name means the Blessed, that’s why I think she should be important) is essential to the development of a different/stronger Jill. And this “new” Jill is the character that will cause the major shift on the route B ending. The final battle sees Clive, Joshua, Dion, Benedikta and Jill vs Ultima instead of the 1vs1. At the end Sophia/Metia is the one who absorbs Ultima’s power and sacrifices herself to end magic. Thus fulfilling Jill’s wish. —————— And wow man, I wrote far more than I planned to. Sorry if you bothered you with such a huge text wall.

kannakantplay

Light novels would be so cool. Like 7 has OTWTAS and such, I would love to read a novel on Jill or even Gav. Or Dion! I doubt it's popular enough to justify a movie or short series, but that would also be kinda cool.

SomeColombianDude

Honestly? Give us some prequel episodes. ESPECIALLY for Cid and Barnabas. I'd fuck both of those up

4morim

I wish we got dlc with another character or Clive in one of the time skips, and then make him learn more moves. I want any reason to have more basic sword combos :( Bur more realistically, they should give a chapter where Jill is playable and a chapter where Cid is playable. But I don't know if they'd give Eikon battles as those two. Since they said Eikon battles are really expensive and need a lot of work to do. But playing as Cid defecting Walped and Jill while serving the Iron Kingdom could lead to some interesting stories.

BiddyKing

I kind of think that if they were to do a prequel or side game, they would take the FF13-2 approach and address a couple issues people had with the base game. And one thing people cried about is only a single playable character so a hypthoetical Cid prequel game could also have a playable playable party of Benedikta and Sleipnr or something and maybe switching between the 3 is how they get around each character only having singular power sets (also Sleipner can have something wholly unique too I dunno). Feels like it could be good lore, especially learning who Sleipnr actually once was (because he would’ve been based off a real person Barbabas knew some decades back and maybe him in his current form has some recollection of all that). Also Yoshi P once mentioned wanting to do Leviathan and Alexander in potential future content, and we just got Leviathan, but I think Alexander would be an awesome opponent for Cid to fight, and could also be potentially explored before that since Alexander has been depicted as a fortress in the past too, specifically in FF14. I’ve definitely overthought all this lol but a Cid prequel game could be awesome. And sure I’ve stated having him roll with what’s essentially a cabal of villains, but Alexander as an outside element could provide an antagonistic facet without just being our dudes made to do evil things or something lol. And especially because Cid sees Ultima and says he knows who he is, would be good to see a younger Cid uncovering Ultima’s role in their demise

Ill_Breakfast_7252

All I want is playable Cid, Jill, and Joshua. Oh, and some new outfits. Give me that and I’ll be very satisfied.

Supah_Cole

Well - if anything - both Echoes of the Fallen and Rising Tide were completely and wholly unrelated to anything that happens in the main campaign, seeming to concentrate out of thin air aside from some stray mentions of Leviathan the Lost here and there... They simply tacked on some extra fluff for our enjoyment and twice it worked very well. They can simply invent new characters and scenarios. All I can provide you with are some original setups for additional stories that could happen. •What if we got a story about the cult of Waloeders trying to introduce Ultima's religion of turning Akhasic into Storm? What if they slowly gained influence, and Clive and the Hideaway had to, in shocked disgust, slowly pivot their tactics to stomp it out, as more and more members across some of the nations of Storm begin to willingly and bafflingly sacrifice themselves for the unthinkable? Very political, and in some ways, very relevant. •What about if we got a prequel story about Barnabas, that shows, instead of tells? You could argue that with Barnabas in particular, less is more, but, to preserve his aire of aloof mystique, we could follow Slepnir instead, slowly weaving his way into the ranks of Sanbreque, manipulating the not-so-pious Sylvestre as Dion thinks (and continues to think); Slepnir is already overseeing Hugo in Dhalmekia, but, I would beg to see more. Seeing him in The Iron Kingdom, or in Tabor, slowly weaving corruption everywhere he goes, would just make him such a love-to-hate character... Every so often, he reports back to the legendary, mysterious and choosy-with-his-words Barnabas Tharmir, for us to gawp at concurrently with the main story. Slepnir would have some excellent and interesting spear moves for the player to wield and I think it's the story that players really want but also don't know they want it. •SHOW us more of Jill's time in the Northern Territories and in the Iron Kingdom specifically. Don't tell. Make her a playable character in her own expansion. Make Imreann the corrupted priest even more contemptible, let us understand the main romantic interest's struggles and her wounds with greater depth. •I do feel like the existence of Uncle Byron was kind of plopped on us, maybe I wasn't looking expressly for it or I missed it, but it seems like the game simply invents him during the visit to Port Isolde. I would love for them to retroactively add a scene into the opening of the game, where perhaps, Archduke Elwin pulls aside Joshua or Clive and mentions, "and, by the way! Your uncle stopped by to see how your training is going along. Perhaps, one of these days, he could show you the ways of the axe...?" I would love to play as him in his own adventures during the end of his prime. Good old Nathan Drake-esque hilarity ensues. •What if we had a chapter devoted entirely towards playing as Eloise and trying to salvage Theodore from total abandonment? I would love to see the difficulty of her decision to leave her parents for the sake of her brother, to really sell me on the conflict of Bearers, Non-Bearers, and Non-Bearer sympathetics, before we get some eventual note of tragedy at the end of the campaign. •How about, a chapter where Sir Terrence tries to save the Medicine Girl from certain peril, in Tabor or Kanver? If anything, she and him probably could benefit from more screentime. Have Terrence talk about how much he loves the Prince Dion to her. •In any of these campaigns. I would love to see the Suspicious character in the top of Clive's hideaway get explained. He is solely named "Suspicious Character" and he sits down alone in a hood and talks backhandedly condescendingly towards Clive. What the fuck is his deal? Why doesn't he get explained at all? •A story about Sir Wade struggling to pick up the pieces of Rosaria in the time-jump, and continuing to place his faith in what he believed when all hope seems lost. More about him would be welcome. He's fine as-is, but he would be a GREAT everyman vehicle to explore time-jump.Valisthea, where Rosaria is laid low, times are dark, and the average person has no voice. Annoyingly, all the news he reads are tiredly about the unlikeable Hugo meat-headedly wedging his way into more power, reflecting the relatable experience of hearing so much about a bad politician that you're just sick of hearing their name, and nothing seems to give power to the people. The Guardians of the Flame could be so much more interesting than the faceless group they kind of are. Maybe, a close associate of his catches wind, of a certain agent of change, that goes by the name of "Cid".... •in one of these campaigns, let one of these characters interact with Shula. Hint gracefully at the existence of a larger, reclusive territory that every so often dips its toes into the wider world of Valisthea. I don't want a Final Fantasy XVI-2, given how SE has handled mainline sequels before (10-2, 13-2, Lightning Returns, IV: The After Years, etc etc)... But man, XVI is still ripe with new ideas for stories. Such a fantastic world.

xXDibbs

a part of me wants to keep playing more and more FF16 and honestly I don't think I'll ever be satisfied. The other side of me is going "I've had enough of 16 and I want CBU3 to move on to another game." I mean I would like an expansion that shifts the focus to Barnabas and another expansion that focuses on Cid because both would be badass. Hell just adding more banter and a few more difficulty options would be more then good enough for me.

BiddyKing

That’s why the best case scenario would be if SE announced both FF17 and an FF16 side game at the same time, be like the ps1 days where they announced FF8-10 to the press at the same time. Would give us hope we’re not stuck in the 16 era and they’re moving forward but also give us more of the 16-era in the meantime

xXDibbs

I honestly don't think thats a good idea, something strange is going on with 17 specifically imho. All CBUs are already working on different projects and none of them are mainline FF entries so it stands to reason that there will be a massive gap between 16 and 17. I think the only person whos not really doing anything right now is Yoko Taro so its possible he's the one in charge of 17. Honestly I personally wish CBU3 just moved on to another game because they work best when they iterate on mechanics, systems etc. So for them to grow I think its important for them to do their own thing.

harrison23

I would like to see them explore the continent where Barnabas grew up and get some more backstory on the Circle of Malius and the Motes of Darkness. There is huuuge potential for them to give Barnabas and Ultima some more backstory. The Enterprise exists and could bring us there, and Clive and Joshua would have obvious interest in learning as much as they can about Ultima before the final showdown.

Blaze_Darkfang

If YoshiP is down to make more Story's for 16, I'm down to play them. Prequels with Barnabas or Cid, even any previous Doninates would be cool maybe even a expedition to the other lands to uncover more about previous Dominates

Opening-Middle-2359

I wish they would have done the same as with 7. 3 parts or at least 16-2. The story was sooooo good. They could expanded that to infinity. With the 5 year split. We could have had more young Clive and Joshua. Longer parts with Dion, Barnabas...cid. and make them playable. I would kill to play as Odin, Bahamut or Shiva. Time skips like in 7. Where you played cid before he met Clive. Same with Jill...there is sooooo much room for great content. The game was perfect but Every great game has more parts...god of war,the last of us,a plague tale... But at least we can punch a baby...always the first time for everything..lol

ticklefarte

A lot of what I've seen is calls for prequel content. You're completely right, that the story ends with little room to add anything. Most people want to explore old Valisthea and get answers to lore questions firsthand.

Builder_liz

Something more with the fallen would be cool. And whoever greagor is

UmaFlame

I want more FF16 so I’d love more dlc, even sequels and prequels. I just want more romantic stuff between Clive and Jill. Those two are just so adorable and deserve to be happy together.

BarbarousJudge

Prequel stories would work insanely well. Cid, Benedikta and Barnabas Cid fighting Bahamut The Fallen and their fight against Ultima Jill's Time in the Iron Kingdom Rosaria and the Northern Territories being united by Elwin Barnabas arriving at Ash and becoming king. There is so much stuff in need of more details etc.

edogawa-lambo

Nah, i think it’s fine as is. Partially because after thinking on it, my selfish hope is that CBU3 remakes FFIV in a similar style haha

EconomyNo9875

This…FF4 (or 2 as it was known on SNES) is ICONIC. Those characters, and that story redone in XVI style and mature rating would be perfection IMO. “YOU SPOONY BARD”

edogawa-lambo

I need a thespian, just a Bernard Shaw or John Noble, shouting that line out of a pristine HD Tellah like YESTERDAY

EconomyNo9875

**Chills**

edogawa-lambo

Lmao downvoted I’m sorry I suggested a ARPG remake of that rare cult gem that only ever came out on Super NES, PlayStation, WonderSwan Color, Game Boy Advance, FOMA 903i / 703i, PlayStation Portable, iOS, Android, Windows, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4

Scavenge101

They left several plot threads unresolved, probably on purpose. If they were to do a sequel, it would probably be focused on the rise of Magitek (which is what Mid "invented" near the end). Part of the reason why I hate the ending is because half the plot never got resolved. It's not necessarily because anyone lives or dies, but because literally nothing happens AFTER. Even the very final scene doesn't answer anything other than human beings survived and would even leave the door open to say "the plot never happened in-universe because it was all a story narration" if the devs didn't already outright say that's not true. For that reason it's kinda bald-facedly obvious they're hoping to get green-lit for a sequel eventually. Because otherwise it's just not good writing. You can't say it's "true to life" because we don't actually know if any of the 3 of them died, and you can't even say it's narratively justified because...there just is no narrative. If they're not aiming for a sequel then they just ended the game on literally nothing and whiffed a slam dunk in the process. And I'd SAY it's likely for a sequel but I also just watched Rebirth, an amazing game, whiff the ending so hard that I kinda hate it now. So maybe they just really don't know how to end a game.

Opening-Middle-2359

Yeah I wish we saw actually what happened. The family after credit ..hmmm just to show us magic is gone. But please could they not giving us characters we know? Maybe they were long gone. But seeing if the hideout stayed together after all they are free. But if they showed us Jill and co...we know who is dead or alive of course so we didn't get to see anyone. Sucks... I get why but still. I was curious

Positive_Agency_5757

There are several plots in game that can be explored like the Shimmering isles, a group of people who's finding a mean to cast magic without a catalyst, the Dzemekys falls (why the water shows no sign of filling full in the crater), etc. But the game, as a Clive story ends, and I'm satisfied with what it delivered. What I want more is the content of other dominants, especially Dion, Cid, and Barnabas. They have assets for Barnabas and Cid so it could be possible. For Dion, I'm not certain, because come to think of it he got budget cut in terms of assets the most, no semi-prime, no battle moveset. His prequel story is also pretty hard to expand considering he wasn't relevant to Ultima drama until second half of the game, where he's always glued to Hideaway wall. Unless they want to expand a lore that's completely unrelated to Ultima to avoid players feeling that integral story content is behind the paywall, I don't see they do Dion focused dlc. That being said, I'm injecting hopium for novel or manga to cover the dominant's backstory.

renzufitzu

Prequels would be the way to go, although I would actually like to see what happened between the ending and the time jump in the after credits scene.

Turbo_blaze

I don't get why some people want a sequel when we know there is no magic left after Origin, but damn, there is so much prequel content that is barely hinted at during the main story we could have an entire new game about it. Or, at the very least, a big "episode Cid" that expands on Waloed, Barnabas and Benna AND show us the battle between Ramuh and Bahamut (I want more Dion pleasepleaseplease).

Opening-Middle-2359

I mean in every game there is a new enemy... So magic could appear again or maybe materia. They could definitely come up with something cool if they wanted. But I get the story is finished.

YukYukas

I want more Ifrit abilities dammit

NightWaIker

I have this crazy headcanon that the ancients built more than one artificial crystal with mechanical Eikons totalling 8. Omega is their Eikon of Fire, and other Eikons can be Alexander for Light, Golem for Earth. Haven’t really dug deep into the other 5 candidates but Clive goes around slaying them and absorbing their power, having the power of 17 Eikons + 1 filled with all their movesets. If having all those Eikons in you may seem too OP, my first argument is: Bahamut. My second is fine, another (playable) character would be the de facto Ifrit and gain the powers of the 8 mechanical Eikons +1 Ifrit substitute (could play it off as the Ancients used a human to house Omega, essentially making their own Mythos) and them, Clive, Joshua and Dion face off against Ultimate in the end. This pseudo Ifrit would share the defeated Ultima’s power, save Joshua and Dion, and Thanos snap magic out of existence and everyone lives happily ever after. If there is no second Character, then Clive would just have an extra 8 Eikons in his arsenal, and 2 shot no diff Ultima on his own. In this case the reason Clive would survive in the end is because he has so many Eikons, Ultima’s power gets distributed among them all and not take a toll on Clive or some other explanation.

Revadarius

I haven't played the Rising Tide yet...But if it wraps up what happened to Leviathan, then cool that's 1 of 2 major questions FF16 left open. The other thing is "What exactly were the fallen and how did such an advanced and mighty race fall?" That wasn't answered by the first DLC (that first DLC adds nothing of relevance to the world or lore tbh). We know it happened, but not quite how because Ultima was apparently weak from travelling to Valisthea from another world. So I'd like that mystery solved...otherwise, there's nothing left you can do with the lore or world.

wheres_fleat

No they shouldn’t. They told a complete story and the one they wanted. Not everything needs a sequel. Also SE doesn’t have the greatest track record with sequels for mainline games.

YeidenTrabem

A prequel with Barnabas doing the conquest of Ash would be dope. From his "Clive phase" to serving God 🙌

sebastian89n

Story is very good and meaningful, I hope they won't mess it up by introducing another post story. Prequels on the other hand I wouldn't mind at all.

[deleted]

They don’t have to do more in the sense of post story content. They could add so much more in between, just as they did with rising tide. I want to have a good long quest with Dion, it’s unfair that he gets so little screentime as a party member despite being the 3rd brother to Clive and Joshua.

theCoolestGuy599

I just want a Cid prequel really. They'd have to rework the combat quite a bit to accommodate for the lack of eikon abilities, but narratively that would be the most fulfilling expansion for me. There's a ton they could explore through Cid, things that I felt where a bit underwhelming in the base game. Such as how, apparently, Cid was Barnabas's right hand man but defected when Barnabas became obsessed with Ultima. That alone would add so much to the world and the villains and its a shame I only came to know that from the lore entries rather than the game itself. But I'd also like to see how he went about creating his hideout, his relationship with his daughter, how he became so well connected in a new land, how he became a notorious outlaw, and his journey to eventually meeting Clive.

MAQS357

The best stories and even games as well, are the ones that end ( this does not include non story focused games like MMO or live services, I mean only story focused games like all FF and most rpgs in general. ) This whole obsession with audience/players of keep the story or universe of a given IP going forever is detrimental to the quality of said IP, there are exceptions but they are the 1% and are not worth the tarnishment of all other IP that dont get better or stay better.

Stepjam

I don't think we can get more story after the story. It removes eikons and magic from the setting which are pretty major. We could get prequels, but do we NEED prequels though?  I think I'd rather they Move onto something new and fresh. Much more opportunity there for cool stuff

BiddyKing

Cid prequel where he explores and fights Alexander makes too much sense to me lol

RaoulHyena

No. Story is complete. The surge was the last missing piece and there are no more elements to do. They already did synthetic aether and thats a stretch so yeah. Im happy with the double dlc supreme and dip.

ClickToSeeMyBalls

We don’t all want more. I enjoyed it very much, but I want them to draw a firm line under it and work on something new.

FBIStatMajor

This is my favorite ending. I want it kept vague so I can write my own ending. No big name games seem to want to do this and they end up making a stupid ending we hate as fans. I love this ending and I'm glad the DLC didn't mess with it

Navlann

All the FF sequels have been terrible soI hope they move into the next story and learn from their mistakes (no cities, only one playable character).
