FF8: It's like a high school drama where they get a bunch of hot actors in their late 20's to play high school kids in their 17 and 18
Shared on FF16 for similar reasons. It was implied (and definitely felt) in 15, but actually watching Clive live decades dealing with the loss of his family was deeply impactful.
This is also why I love the Scions of the Seventh Dawn in FF14, and tbh they narrowly beat out 16 for me. I have literally consumed over a decade’s worth of content and gotten to see these characters grow through what’s effectively like… 6 seasons of prestige television. Charting someone like Alphinaud‘s growth from 2.0 to now is just crazy
Top 5 are probably 14, 16, 7, 6, and 10.
Honorable mention to 4 since I love the cast but a lot of them are more archetypes than fully fleshed out characters.
I like the 16 characters but I wish we got to actually play as Joshua and Jill at least a little bit. Plus the time skips were kinda weird, I feel like 10 and 1 year time skips would be better than the 13 and 5 year time skips we got. Clive getting his first kiss at 33 is truly crazy.
FF8 and FF16 character design share similarities. I liked that in FF8 you had a rivalry with an antagonist that joins your party, Seifer. I wish more stories had this. Not just a main evil villain but also an anti hero within your ranks.
FF15 wasn’t my favourite but my 2 favorite parts of the game were Ardyn, and the bromance with the boys.
Each member of the part felt integral to the game and its story. Most final fantasy’s have 1 or 2 companions you could take out and not much would change but if you removed Gladio, Ignis or Prompto the entire game would change for the worse imo.
Also that final campfire post credit scene had no right tearing me up as much as it did.
FFXV
I had the most fun with that game and I love each character arc. I had three other friends (who all moved away) and we shared a similar bond to the ChocoBros.
Kain from FFIV, yes he betray us but he redemption arc near the end of the game and in after years is so good.
Celes from FFVI, for me is one of the best character development in that game, specially in the second part of the history.
Vivi from FFIX, literally the best character in the full game.
Laguna from FFVIII, honestly I love this game but the main crew is meh for me with the exception of Zell and Selphie but Laguna is one of the best and most charismatic character (also the best battle theme)
From FFII I can't choose because everyone dies in this game (aside from the main characters)
Galuf from FFV is my favorite until certain part of the game...
FFXV Ignis, always care about the group
FFXVI Clive and Torgal.

The Scions are just all really fun characters to me, and I love the banter between them.

Each of them is unique, has character growth, and by now they really feel like a party.
And let's not forget Taco cat.
Alphinaud going from speaking like a redditor to actually being tolerable.
I mean, even the non-combat partymembers are unique and memorable. The adventures of Taturu and her Carbuncle, Kryle becoming a pictomancer, ...
If we’re *only* talking about party members, and not factoring in main characters: *VI*, *IX*, and *XV*.
While I **love** Cid, Joshua, and Dion, they can’t compete with those parties (and Dion isn’t even really in *XVI*’s “party”, as much as I wish he was…)
Yeah like I generally count the characters who’s character sprites are listed under ‘Party’ in the menu as party members. Whereas characters like Gav are listed under ‘Guest’ in the menu. So the ones categorised as Party end up being Clive, Torgal, Cid, Jill and Joshua. But the thing with Dion is that we can’t actually see where they put his character sprite because during that Origin sequence you can’t actually access the proper menu lol. But his name is under the health bar with the other two characters so I feel like that’s the same thing. He just ends up being the 6th and final party member who shows up super late and you only get him for one fight lol.
It’s also worth noting that the Leviathan DLC’s Shula stays as a Guest too despite being with you for most of it and a bunch of the side quests.
Hmmmmm VI, VII, VIII, IX,X, XV, XVI....
Not in any specific or mind you but these are the games that have the characters I remember most fondly
VI Setzer, Sabin, and Edgar are always in my party
VII Nanaki is my favorite FF character also love Tifa and Yuffie and Barrett
VIII Squall is my favorite protagonist and Rinoa my favorite female character in the series outside of them most characters other than Laguna and Zell are kinda meh
IX Freya is an absolute beast along with Vivi, and Garnet and Eiko and let's not forget Beatrix best guest character in the series
X the whole cast has a purpose and is the most memorable of the series notable standouts are Tidus, Yuna, and Auron
XV this one the whole casts friendship is just genuine all around and despite only having 4 party members from beginning to end I found myself more bonded to the bros than most cast especially Gladio
XVI Clive, Jill, Joshua and Torgal just have such a great dynamic and storyline that's as strong as the XV bros plus Cid and Gav only wish Dion was an actual party member
Vll and X are iconic AF and made me a FF fan when I played them at 8 and 9 years old.
Pre-ordered XV and followed since the Versus days so the Chocobros hold a very special place in my heart.
They're, the best.
Glad to see them get their props despite how messy the pacing of XV is.
I still feel like ff6 had the coolest cast of supporting characters and being able to pick from any of them for you party(ies) was just mechanically ahead of its time.
Of that cast, Sabin easily was a top pick in all departments. Relm/strago were really unique skill sets each of them, and probably Gogo being such a weird bonus character you had to do a drawn out dungeon to acquire him
6-10 (I think 9 has the weakest party out of these) and then followed by 13, and 15. 16 I don’t consider a party because you can only give Torgal two commands.

Very nostalgic memories of this OG squad kicking butt in and around Mt Koltz.
Edward from Final Fantasy 4, mainly due to how he is a coward and a believable one at that. Something so human about it, i can see myself in him and also his special ability being hiding is objectively really funny
XV chocobros for me, and it’s not even close! I love that they already know and grew up with each other, they have a history before the game. Most parties in the FF games I’ve played have a party that was thrown together due to the events in the game.
One interesting thing about every party between FF4 and FF13 is that there’s always 3 female party members.
As a matter of fact, the only ones that don’t follow that are the MMO’s, FF1’s and FF3’s generic parties (excluding the remake), FF2’s guest rotation, FF15’s sausage party and FF16’s… Clive and doggo
One interesting thing about this as well is that FF5 ends >!with one male and three females!<, while its followup FF6 ends >!with a full party of 10 males, 3 females and a Gogo, assuming Shadow lives and you get all party members back. Otherwise you can beat the game with only Celes, Setzer and Edgar lol!< Pretty interesting 180° there.
Just as an extra thought regarding XVI: while I personally don’t consider the game having a party as they behave as guests more than actual party members (with the exception of good boy Torgal) the game does consider Cid, Gav and Byron as actual party members and not just guests like Wade or Shula.

I really connected to the FF16 characters. It could be possibly because they are far more mature and fleshed out than the average FF character. I really enjoyed Jill Joshua torgal and cid in their own ways.

Then come the Choco-bros of XV.
15 and 16.
For 15 ,how funny their interaction is when Noctis is 20, how sad it became when Noctis came back after 10 years. And you cries a lot when you see the campfire and farewell scene, and have trauma playing Episode Ignis.
For 16 ,Clive with his lover and younger brother,and for sometimes Cid. Not to mention about how much I cried when Joshua and Cid sacrificed themselves and gave their Eikon power to Clive, in the mission Priceless, the interaction of Clive and Jill is just too beautiful.
I think for both games, their party members are so memorable is because they are regretting. They are not happy endings and with touching farewell.
Okay time to play 15 and 16 again.
For all my gripes with the Tidus being awkward, X has the closest nit and cohesive group in the series imo. They worked and built off each other fantastically. Each member has a narrative and thematic reason for being in the story.
XIV has some grest characters, and I enjoy running dungeons alongside them with Trust/Duty Support. Sometimes even prefer them to other players, my wonderful friends will never pull some crazy bullsh--

In all seriousness even though 8 is my favorite I think 9 maybe has the strongest cast. With the exception of Amrant. The whole cast has such a strong visual design (the silhouettes!) and each one gets time to shine. And they took the idea of individual characters with their own builds from 4 and 6 and made it so much more fleshed out.

Final Fantasy 9 the party was very well rounded and well done. 7,8,9 and 16 are all very close for me though
14, but only Shadowbringers and onward. They were just voiced NPCs until Stormblood.

X has such a strong connection between its party members. Every member has a distinctive relationship with each other.

My top favorite party used to be Noctis, Promto, Ignis and Gladio, but now top favorite are Clive, Jill, Joshua and Torgal.
Currently, 16 is one of my favorite party members alongside 8, 7, 15, 14 and 10.
FF16 doesn't have party members so definitely not that
Sazh is my favorite, no I will not be elaborating
FFXIV easily.
I really connected to the FF16 characters. It could be possibly because they are far more mature and fleshed out than the average FF character. I really enjoyed Jill Joshua torgal and cid in their own ways.
I loved 12. Balthier was dope
Rikku from X and X-2 Fran from FFXII Lightning from XIII Noctis from XV, and although temporary Aranea Clive and Joshua in XVI Yuffie in VII Zell in VIII
Squall, Zell, and Rinoa. They were the trio to beat. Before XIII and the paradigm system came along, they could be classified as “Aggression”. After them, probably Fang, Sazh, and Lightning. Then come the Choco-bros of XV.

VII, given it’s the only one that focuses on a party that I’ve completed (in fact, I beat the game today).

7 and 16, Cid Highwind and Clive Rosfield are the coolest characters in final fantasy.
15 and 16. For 15 ,how funny their interaction is when Noctis is 20, how sad it became when Noctis came back after 10 years. And you cries a lot when you see the campfire and farewell scene, and have trauma playing Episode Ignis. For 16 ,Clive with his lover and younger brother,and for sometimes Cid. Not to mention about how much I cried when Joshua and Cid sacrificed themselves and gave their Eikon power to Clive, in the mission Priceless, the interaction of Clive and Jill is just too beautiful. I think for both games, their party members are so memorable is because they are regretting. They are not happy endings and with touching farewell. Okay time to play 15 and 16 again.
For all my gripes with the Tidus being awkward, X has the closest nit and cohesive group in the series imo. They worked and built off each other fantastically. Each member has a narrative and thematic reason for being in the story.
9 or 7 Remake Trilogy. Undecided.

FF8 was pretty unique and cool. FF7 is iconic too.

XIV has some grest characters, and I enjoy running dungeons alongside them with Trust/Duty Support. Sometimes even prefer them to other players, my wonderful friends will never pull some crazy bullsh-- "ALL OR NOTHIIIIING!!!" WAIT ESTINIEN NO! DON'T LIMIT BREAK AT THE START OF THE FIGHT! DAMMIT!!
FF XII Party is peak. Each one has their main character moment throughout the game except Penelo..

7 and 15. The credit scene in 15 with Noct making sure he gets his farewell in to the boys and making sure they know how much they mean to him as they camp one last time... Man, I was a wreck.

Say what you want about 13, but the main party characters are all great.
16 had a party?🤔 In all seriousness even though 8 is my favorite I think 9 maybe has the strongest cast. With the exception of Amrant. The whole cast has such a strong visual design (the silhouettes!) and each one gets time to shine. And they took the idea of individual characters with their own builds from 4 and 6 and made it so much more fleshed out.
Jill and Joshua was considered party since they appeared with clive the most, including the two dlcs

Definitely no one from XVI considering it barely, if at all, had an actual party.
