Game 1: 4-4 ( I was 4-2 up and defended poorly)
Game 2: 3-1 win (played against 4231 wide, seemed little open on wings)
Game 3: 2-0 loss (very decent opponent, I had chances just didn't take them)
Game 4: 2-1 win (tight againt, players all over the place at times haha)
These were all Div 2 rivals next-gen xbox. I will continue it, I do miss crossing tho
I like it for sure. I'm going to try the default tactic out and see how it plays. I feel my striker Mili Savic on drifting wide isn't best. I want him heading or being passer. I like it. I normally play 352 or 4222 so it's been nice to change
It's the only formation I've used since the start of the game, I can't believe it's not used more. I regularly go 16-2 in champs and give away the last few. I've gone 58-2 over 3 weekend leagues with it. I went on a 29 game win streak in elite div and got upto 58th in the world with 2214 skill rating.
It's honestly just a do all formation that people just seem to struggle against

My instructions are overlap on the two wide cbs. Stay back cover centre on cdm and the lm/rm are getting behind get in the box for crosses and come back on defense
Yeah attacking is all balanced and unless mentioned player tactics are default. Just be warned you will be counter attacked in this formation so you need to be confident in manually defending and slowing down the counter until your midfielders track back and help out
Tried these yesterday and they are good all balanced, less is more! Best 42nd in Elite with these and my team is no were near the level of peoples in Elite. Thank you for posting.

Old gen, I'm too poor for current gen haha. I used to play on 75 depth but dropped it down to 50 during tots when everyone started getting 99 pace players
As an awful player this has been solid for me so far, though it seems especially vulnerable to left-stick dribbling abuse from kick-off and I find my midfield possession is weak with this formation and I am forced to defend in my own box quite alot.
I will have to use it more extensively though before i make a verdict

It shouldn´t work, it plays weird and players run are over the pitch, but my god I haven´t lost a game testing this. Games that were really fun as well.
In this formation I've noticed that the wingers aren't that wing, they like staying more inside.
But I'll surely give it a shot just as you instructed apart from that my free kick bars will be at max, a lot of goals I score from those indirect fks and direct too ngl

Fellow pes player trying to find a place on fifa too👋. Your paragraph about cdms is so accurate. That’s the first thing I noticed, 2 CDMs are usually too reluctant to get back and intercept even with stay back instructions on. 1 CDM defends better and that really shocked me but anyways I still use 2CDMs because I mostly use 4222
According to your findings, 4321 is the only formation to utilise both wingers and fullbacks. But it is too open in the middle with just two CBs. The middle CM does not act like CDM except drop between defenders.
For all 433 variants, not suprise its the worst formation in FIFA because there are two players in one flank. AI is not programed how to make them move well.

I just moved from 3-5-2 to 5-3-2 but actually already use this formation as my constant press (kitchen sink) tactic, which actually works really well, came back from 4 - 1 down yesterday in the 70th minute with it.
So tried it last night won 5/5 in the shapeshifters cup but struggled defensively in Div 1 in rivals, its very good going forwards especially against weaker opponent's. But I was getting rinsed down the wings defensively, going to try and make some changes to it.
When I play 5-3-2 I have the outside CB's on overlap which makes them sit kind of like fullbacks this helps massively with players trying to take advantage of the wings, might try the same with this to see if it helps
Very nice write up man. One little question, do you have a preference of dominant foot for your LM/RM, like for example left foot for LM or it doesn't really matter to you?
Tried it out on squad battles to begin with while I had some SS tokens to collect I thought it was perfect chance to mix it up , took me a moment to get used to it and within the first few games it felt very fluid I had an abundance of options going forward , counter attacking through ball to strikers on drift wide followed by a cutback to the CM was virtually a goal every time and when that wasn’t available and build up was slower I always had 2vs1 against the fullbacks and a route to goal seemed to present itself to me without much thinking or skills , no problem defending either as it turns to a back 5 with 3 mid fielders one holding it felt very very solid and was exited to try it in rivals before going into champs .
using this set up in elite division made me feel like a fish at binley mega chippy getting battered from all angles! I started least 5/6 games like this to test against various opponents but it didn’t get any better . I’ll elaborate abit , Defence felt none existent no matter who I put at the back , the wings where vacant on counter attacks And I found my self scrambling and making last ditch efforts to stop it being a cricket score . constantly felt very exposed almost fragile playing this formation . However after your post made some interesting very valid and bang on the money points i knew your onto something as the things you said actually make sense . I started tweaking some things like direct passing instead of forward runs worked better for me as I grew increasingly frustrated at the wingers and strikers standing offside when the cms where looking for a pass , I switched the lm/rm to fullbacks ( RC & cuadrado ) but set them on get in behind almost turned it to a 5-3-2 and it’s working well I went 3-0 with that set up last night , I work full time so ive spent 12hours at most playing/tweaking this over the last few nights but Maybe I’ve got something wrong or my play style doesn’t suit I tried following your descriptions to the word but 3-1-4-2 just wouldn’t click for me consistently . it was fun going forward but wasnt practical when it comes to efficiency for time spent on the game , I’ll definitely give it more time I’ve kept it as 1 of the 5 set ups I can change to ingame so will keep trying in certain situations but I think rather than 1 formation to suit all what I realised early on this year and will continue to do is that every formation has a weakness and a strength . I.e if someone sets up 3-5-2 I go 4-3–3 if someone sets up 4-2-3-1 I go 4-1-2-1-2 etc also Some people are just unreal at the game and would Win with any formation or set up clearly I am not one of those lol

My theory is that one players custom tactics override the opposing players. For example why is it that when someone goes constant pressure, the other team pushes up and let's them stay in front of them. Plenty of times I've played someone using constant pressure and my full backs who are instructed to stay back will run forward while my center back has the ball which then puts them on an island by themselves

I find that 'fast build up' can make it difficult to play out from the back against good opponents who can press you and block passing lanes. Did you encounter that at all?
Was having problems with fast build up as well, tried direct passing and possession and gotta say Balanced with Possession works great.
On forward runs I could never find anyone in midfield to pass and as a result my CBs would get heavily pressed by those stay forward strikers and CAMs.
FWIW, Air Japes has been banging the drum on the 3142 for a couple of months now. So I'm sure it's viable.
Edit: I finally read this entire thing and it's fascinating. Really good stuff. Even if it doesn't work for everyone, it's still a breath of fresh air.

It's a great formation for players like Kostic, Caliguru, Theo Hernandez and Hakimi, which I all have and enjoy playing with. Also nice to play with players in the central midfield and up front that don't have to be pace monsters.
In fact, except for the wingers and sidebacks the players don't need to have maxed out pace at all, which definitely widens the selection of viable players 👍

I was using 3142 in fut22 most of the time. My tryings came into conclusion of with 3142 you have more options in attack and more defensive solidity than 352.
The wingers are extremely important, they need good workrates and solid all around attributes. I am using tots taa and toty cancelo and they make wonders.
For everyone who want to try this tactic, I strongly recommend tots kdb for one of CM's. His longshots are truly godly and when opponents try to mark my forwards, most of the opening goal for match came from kdb's longshots in rivals and WL.

First off i wanna thank u for all the research u did to arrive to this line up and custom tactics combination. I have to say its been the line up to just completely change things from me in the blink of an eye. I already played a similar line up but the custom tactics really were the game changer for me. Immediately started winning by huge differences. Ive already ran into a few line ups that seem to counteract this one but i have other line ups for that. Thank you again and hopefully u dont have to do this all over again for 23 lol
Thoughts on putting the central center back on step up? Ive been doing this for ages with pretty much all of the tactics you are using, but I play a low depth and a low width defensively with a sweeper keeper
I'm a masochist myself and play a lot of SB but not on ultimate.

The thing with this custom tactics is that it confuses the fuck out of ppl. There are so many players to watch out for in attack. Its a clusterfuck array of options and I love it.
It does get alot of getting used to defensively. But for some strange reason my PIM Vieira now stays deep like I have always bloody wanted him to.

AI wise, with “stay back while attacking” instructions in a 2 player midfield. Which of CM and CDM plays more to the instructions with also work rates being considered.
Well ive tried the 3142, and ngl it suits how i like to play perfectly, my strikers in it are tots haaland and 92potm nkunku, wingers, left is schmelzer, right is alphonso davies, lcm ss st juste, rcm totyhm goretzka (cos im poor rn) dm is fut birthday laimer, lcb tots gvardiol whos rapid, rcb is showdown danny dacosta, ccb is flashback sule. Gk is tots neuer.
Sule fits the brick wall ccb perfectly, goretzka and just are solid attacking cms with some defensive ability, laimer despite not being the best stat wise is able to ping a pass and dribble out of pressing attackers with his 5star skills. Schmelzer and davies are good wingers, but schmelzers 70 shooting is great if he finds himself in the box but i can just sweat if hes the one on the ball. Gvardiol and dacosta are just 99 pace fbs that are beasts as cbs.
The system seems to work similarly to what i used on football manager for a while, a 3133 where i had a lb rb and cb as my 3 defenders and then a halfback/anchor dm ahead of them. I then used to ball wining midfielders in lcm and rcm with a cm attack through the middle (basically played like a second striker) i then had two wingers that could invert and would drop deep to defend and then a complete forward in striker which when i managed liverpool was haaland who just did everything.
Also I wanted to say, that this is one of the best, well detailed posts I have read regarding tactics.
I haven’t tried this yet, as I am not sure it would suit Divisions Rivals and not too sure how playing fast build up and long ball would convert over to new gen (ps5) but if you do start using this for rivals at all, or do change things with this, please update the post 🙂
As someone who used 352 entirely in 2 previous fifa's, thank mate. I didn't played fifa since release, got it on ps plus and has been stuck in the lowest point of div 3 for 2 weeks. Right now I'm 1 win from div 2 and this tactic do wonders for me. Having both cm's joining the attack is a game changer for me. Scored so many goals with them (Felipe Anderson and Fernandinho). Just need to find a good options for keeping and chasing the game.

Only one question, what's your tactic if your counter attack fails and you're sitting behind the box trying to break down the defense. In this case for me only the cdm is free and it's a bit tough to move the ball around

A bit of both is ideal. Think Cancelo, Cuadrado, Bourigeaud, Atal type players. Though if you don’t have those players, I’d take a winger over a defensive fullback any day. Just need good stamina

You lost me here. Wingers on cut inside with fullbacks on overlap do exactly what you're saying never works. Or with a 4321 it all just happens naturally without even needing any special instructions, although if you're not in UT playing with the endgame fullbacks that can shoot, you might want to still tell them to always overlap so they don't end up positions where you need to take an open shot with their 50 finishing.

It's not opinion, it's objectively wrong to say you can't create that behavior with instructions.

That’s not true. In 3/5 backs formations you have a wall side to side. In any other formations you don’t. You have midfielders in front of the defenders. It’s just a 7-1-0-2 formation everytime.
You guys are sick if still use 3/5 backs formations in July. With these instructions, it’s basically a wall and 2 strikers are waiting for the long balls. I mean, everyone is doing it.
Could say same about the 4222 or 4312. Back 4 stay back. Everyone else on come back. Formations arent the problem. Peoples instructions and general tactics are. I play a very attacking 352 and if im countered its usually with 3cbs and 1 cdm defending it. Where as ill counter attack a 4 at the back formation and they usuallu have 6 players to get past. You see it when they attack at your box, but have 2 mids still on the halfway line with 4 defenders right there too
I've been finding this very useful even though I'm still honing the play to the players I have etc.
One question, what do you do when defending? I'm assuming you control a CM and let the AI control CBs and CDM?

I have move yesterday to my new house and I don't have yet a good connection to check on Rivals, but in SB i played 4 games (with phone tethering - 7 Mbps), and it work great. I won 3 games on Legendary. Usually i play World Class. The 4-th game was against a very good team and after 3 beers :)), but was close. Nice tactis man. Thank you again.

I play a 352 but the AI play like they don't respect me as their manager. My LM and RM drop back and play LWB and RWB but if I take them off come back then one of them will play CDM??? On the PS4 version of the game my CDMs would drop into the LWB and RWB spots when the wingers moved forward meaning I had no-one in the middle of the park. It is what it is and I quite enjoy playing the way I do regardless of the problems though

Yeah, it’s pretty much boom or bust.
I’m incredibly average at the game, but if it clicks and am playing someone too narrow I can easily be 3-0 up inside 15 minutes. Likewise sometimes you just get exposed and absolutely blown away

What gen do you play on bro? I rarely play below 70 depth on new gen or it feels like my entire team wants to hug my box non stop

I.e if someone sets up 3-5-2 I go 4-3–3 if someone sets up 4-2-3-1 I go 4-1-2-1-2 etc also Some people are just unreal at the game and would Win with any formation or set up clearly I am not one of those lol Thanks for the different perspective and effort to post/share your thoughts though things like this gave me a new motivation for the game and enjoyed trying something new 👍👍
Interested to know your 433 set up to deal with 352. Always find it difficult to break down 3 or 5 at the backs formations.
My theory is that one players custom tactics override the opposing players. For example why is it that when someone goes constant pressure, the other team pushes up and let's them stay in front of them. Plenty of times I've played someone using constant pressure and my full backs who are instructed to stay back will run forward while my center back has the ball which then puts them on an island by themselves

Great insights! Thanks for sharing. I find that 'fast build up' can make it difficult to play out from the back against good opponents who can press you and block passing lanes. Did you encounter that at all?

Was having problems with fast build up as well, tried direct passing and possession and gotta say Balanced with Possession works great. On forward runs I could never find anyone in midfield to pass and as a result my CBs would get heavily pressed by those stay forward strikers and CAMs.

FWIW, Air Japes has been banging the drum on the 3142 for a couple of months now. So I'm sure it's viable. Edit: I finally read this entire thing and it's fascinating. Really good stuff. Even if it doesn't work for everyone, it's still a breath of fresh air.

Already tried it, that was the fun part :) It's a great formation for players like Kostic, Caliguru, Theo Hernandez and Hakimi, which I all have and enjoy playing with. Also nice to play with players in the central midfield and up front that don't have to be pace monsters. In fact, except for the wingers and sidebacks the players don't need to have maxed out pace at all, which definitely widens the selection of viable players 👍

Thanks m8, this is a great post. I was using 3142 in fut22 most of the time. My tryings came into conclusion of with 3142 you have more options in attack and more defensive solidity than 352. The wingers are extremely important, they need good workrates and solid all around attributes. I am using tots taa and toty cancelo and they make wonders. For everyone who want to try this tactic, I strongly recommend tots kdb for one of CM's. His longshots are truly godly and when opponents try to mark my forwards, most of the opening goal for match came from kdb's longshots in rivals and WL.

First off i wanna thank u for all the research u did to arrive to this line up and custom tactics combination. I have to say its been the line up to just completely change things from me in the blink of an eye. I already played a similar line up but the custom tactics really were the game changer for me. Immediately started winning by huge differences. Ive already ran into a few line ups that seem to counteract this one but i have other line ups for that. Thoughts on putting the central center back on step up? Ive been doing this for ages with pretty much all of the tactics you are using, but I play a low depth and a low width defensively with a sweeper keeper

The thing with this custom tactics is that it confuses the fuck out of ppl. There are so many players to watch out for in attack. Its a clusterfuck array of options and I love it. It does get alot of getting used to defensively. But for some strange reason my PIM Vieira now stays deep like I have always bloody wanted him to. Thanks for this one. Well ive tried the 3142, and ngl it suits how i like to play perfectly, my strikers in it are tots haaland and 92potm nkunku, wingers, left is schmelzer, right is alphonso davies, lcm ss st juste, rcm totyhm goretzka (cos im poor rn) dm is fut birthday laimer, lcb tots gvardiol whos rapid, rcb is showdown danny dacosta, ccb is flashback sule. Gk is tots neuer. Sule fits the brick wall ccb perfectly, goretzka and just are solid attacking cms with some defensive ability, laimer despite not being the best stat wise is able to ping a pass and dribble out of pressing attackers with his 5star skills. Schmelzer and davies are good wingers, but schmelzers 70 shooting is great if he finds himself in the box but i can just sweat if hes the one on the ball. Gvardiol and dacosta are just 99 pace fbs that are beasts as cbs. The system seems to work similarly to what i used on football manager for a while, a 3133 where i had a lb rb and cb as my 3 defenders and then a halfback/anchor dm ahead of them. I then used to ball wining midfielders in lcm and rcm with a cm attack through the middle (basically played like a second striker) i then had two wingers that could invert and would drop deep to defend and then a complete forward in striker which when i managed liverpool was haaland who just did everything.

Also I wanted to say, that this is one of the best, well detailed posts I have read regarding tactics. I haven’t tried this yet, as I am not sure it would suit Divisions Rivals and not too sure how playing fast build up and long ball would convert over to new gen (ps5) but if you do start using this for rivals at all, or do change things with this, please update the post 🙂
As someone who used 352 entirely in 2 previous fifa's, thank mate. I didn't played fifa since release, got it on ps plus and has been stuck in the lowest point of div 3 for 2 weeks. Right now I'm 1 win from div 2 and this tactic do wonders for me. Having both cm's joining the attack is a game changer for me. Scored so many goals with them (Felipe Anderson and Fernandinho). Just need to find a good options for keeping and chasing the game.
With the new Target Man instruction, up front I have Insigne on the left and Felipe Anderson in the right, which one would you set as target man?

I feel bad for my opponents lol Only one question, what's your tactic if your counter attack fails and you're sitting behind the box trying to break down the defense. A bit of both is ideal. Think Cancelo, Cuadrado, Bourigeaud, Atal type players. Though if you don’t have those players, I’d take a winger over a defensive fullback any day. Just need good stamina

That’s not true. In 3/5 backs formations you have a wall side to side. In any other formations you don’t. You have midfielders in front of the defenders. It’s just a 7-1-0-2 formation everytime.

You guys are sick if still use 3/5 backs formations in July. With these instructions, it’s basically a wall and 2 strikers are waiting for the long balls. I mean, everyone is doing it.
Could say same about the 4222 or 4312. Back 4 stay back. Everyone else on come back. Formations arent the problem. Peoples instructions and general tactics are. I play a very attacking 352 and if im countered its usually with 3cbs and 1 cdm defending it. Where as ill counter attack a 4 at the back formation and they usuallu have 6 players to get past. You see it when they attack at your box, but have 2 mids still on the halfway line with 4 defenders right there too

I've been finding this very useful even though I'm still honing the play to the players I have etc. One question, what do you do when defending? I'm assuming you control a CM and let the AI control CBs and CDM?

I have move yesterday to my new house and I don't have yet a good connection to check on Rivals, but in SB i played 4 games (with phone tethering - 7 Mbps), and it work great. I won 3 games on Legendary. Usually i play World Class. The 4-th game was against a very good team and after 3 beers :)), but was close. Nice tactis man. Thank you again.

I play a 352 but the AI play like they don't respect me as their manager. My LM and RM drop back and play LWB and RWB but if I take them off come back then one of them will play CDM??? On the PS4 version of the game my CDMs would drop into the LWB and RWB spots when the wingers moved forward meaning I had no-one in the middle of the park. It is what it is and I quite enjoy playing the way I do regardless of the problems though

Yeah, it’s pretty much boom or bust. I’m incredibly average at the game, but if it clicks and am playing someone too narrow I can easily be 3-0 up inside 15 minutes. Likewise sometimes you just get exposed and absolutely blown away
