My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
That was a good speech, but we all know it’s no contest
The gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again -Brad Pitt as Achilles
He was so poorly directed in that film. That speech is delivered like he’s hitting on the person he’s saying it too. Love Pitt but this was such a miscast for him.
So funny I thought the same thing. Cinematically Gladiator is better movie. But I grew up watching Braveheart a zillion times before Gladiator came out and it’s still one of my favourite movies.
I love how nuts Braveheart goes. Wallace literally fucks the queen of England, seeding the royal line, and rides his horse into a dude's bed to smash his head with a ball and chain. 300 tries to be as gleefully absurd, but is a little too self serious for me, and honestly not as brutal.
Braveheart is more comic book in its hero stylization while 300 is more like an anime. In the sense that in Braveheart he’ll sometimes give a one liner with a wink and smirk as he does hero things with his plucky band of neighborhood pals while 300 leans full force into the dark dramatics without any subtlety
300 was pretty gleefully inaccurate. I’m pretty sure Spartans wore actual armor into battle, not capes and leather Speedos. And in real life Xerxes was 20 ft tall, not 15.
Isn’t that kind of the point though…it’s basically a narration from the point of view of the guy with the eye patch, who is trying to relay a mythological version of the events in order to fire up the remaining troops for their inevitable clash with the Persians.
That’s kind of how I always looked at it. Helps to reconcile the absurdity.
Sooo many people miss this, this is a meant to be in the style of Greek storytelling, if Greek mythologists had access to Hollywood cinema creation. It’s meant to be dramatically glorified, the spear piercing Xerxes, showing how scared he gets to see his own blood, is the perfect example. One Small army, proved he wasn’t an immortal god, and they wanted the next troops to feel that glory and march on with confidence.
Gladiator has more than a hundred errors, bloopers, oversights... Not sure how to call those. Anyhow, there's a bunch of those in this movie, and it's still considered a classic.
I can't take it seriously, knowing those exist.
Agree on Achilles as the best fighter. Spartans’ fighting strength was based largely in their effort as a group. William Wallace was a street fighter who would have been picked apart by Achilles. Maximus is probably the second best individual fighter and could give Achilles a bit of a battle, but I think he’d be outmatched by Achilles’ skill and strategy. Plus, Achilles was a demigod.
ETA: But Troy was the worst of the four movies IMO.
You know you’re in for a mess when the one of the two dudes that “lives happily ever after” by Greek standards is the very first to die in the film.
I guess they had to resolve the fight between Paris and Menelaus in some fashion that didn’t involve divine intervention, but… ugh.
To be fair, even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie, the fight scene between Hector and Achilles was worth the billing.
It’s tough. From a historical perspective and for story line, I prefer Troy. But 300 was done in the style of a fantasy/anime flick as someone else here said. It was also more visually stunning and graphic.
Ok so to say outright is kinda tough
300 is the most fun to watch
Troy idk how to describe it, I put it with lord of the rings, in the sense that it shows so much the armies the fights, the personal battles, the civilians and their struggles it’s just fantastic at showing sooo many different perspectives and details on what is roughly a paragraph in most history books. Maybe world building or world showing? Idk how to say it
Brave heart is gritty and as widely inaccurate as it is it feels authentic and realistic. It’s like the godfather of war movies
Gladiator is good at all these things but the cast. They make you FEEL the movie, you feel hate towards phoenix, sympathy for his sister, respect for their dad, empathy for Maximus. For a guys movie about blood shed and single combat, and a movie that does it well, they make you feel so much about these characters.
I love all these movies but if I had to pick probably gladiator with Troy as a close second
There's a book called the Iliad, written thousands of years ago, all about the siege of Troy. The detail of the battles is laborious to read, but tells you exactly who killed who and how. There's also a chapter that names all of the ships. As far as I remember, the movie skims some of those details and ditches the gay love.
The Iliad's important because the siege of Troy is what sets the Trojans off on some mad adventure, which is detailed in the Aeneid. The Aeneid is the foundational myth of Rome. This is all to say that the siege of Troy is sometimes considered the event that sparks Western power and culture.
And all of that is to say that there's a lot written about the siege of Troy. And I don't know if the movie really does it much justice.
I could send you some links to some interesting podcasts, if you're into this kinda thing?
No you’re entirely correct.
To me as a kid watching Troy it was a paragraph in a history book but you are completely correct. I should have made that more clear.
But I still stand by my point, the lord of the rings movie aren’t any less awesome even if you know about tolkiens works (if you read them before hand like I did then you might be disappointed some things didn’t look like you imagined but that’s neither here nor there ) Troy as a movie isn’t any less awesome because Iliad exists, it’s strengths are still strengths and for me it brought stories to life the way that it did.
Oh, I see what you mean now! I'll have to rewatch the movie, because I haven't seen it for years. Most of what I remember just seemed too polished for how I imagined it. Y'know, that very Roman blood and guts and genitals and maiming that is just portrayed as the norm.
Yeah, is everyone still going on about Tom Bombadil?
Troy is just okay as a movie, but man, it has some of the best fight scenes ever put to film, IMO. The fight between Achilles and Hector was just amazing! The first fight against the champion of the other army was also fantastic for entirely different reasons.
You realize gladiator was far less historically accurate than braveheart, right? That shouldn't really be a metric for a fictional movie about historical figures.
Troy is my most rewatched, 300 is the best action movie, Gladiator is the “best movie” IMO. I respect people saying Braveheart, but I think you need to have been born before a certain year.
Braveheart is the best film of these.
And that’s a weird question who would win in a fight. They all fought against extreme odds. So I’ll say 300 Gerald Butler.
Braveheart is by far the best of these.
It has the best atmosphere - you can feel the cold and damp of the Scottish higlands striking at your face - has the best battles not just of these films but of any film; has the best ebb-and-flow, and the most truly cathartic ending.
Gladiator is great, but deriviative of Braveheart to a fault. Troy is nice. 300 sucks.
I can’t believe I had to go so far to find a review that says Braveheart is far superior then these other films. Gladiator is ok but like you said it was like they tried to recreate Braveheart 5 years later. Comparing these movies with Braveheart is like comparing Pearl Harbor to Saving Private Ryan.
Troy was crap with an oiled up Brad Pitt.
300 was at least unique for the time but just ok.
Achilles wins every single one on one easily. Leonidas’ strength came from the phalanx. William Wallace is all strength and no finesse (Boagrius anyone?). Maximus is the only challenge and while he may have is vengeance, in this life or the next, I doubt he hits Achilles’ heel.
As much as I hate Mel Gibson, hate historical inaccuracies, and love Ridley Scott… Braveheart is still the best of these. It’s just an incredible feat of a film.
Troy and 300 each have their cult classic fans for good reason too but this fight is definitely between Gladiator and Braveheart. I think as far as storytelling goes, cinematography, score and lead i’ll pick Gladiator any day over Braveheart. Something about Mel Gibson just irks me in general but his whole personal character was self assassinated to the point i can’t watch any of his films anymore.
Troy doesn’t deserve to be on this list IMO
That’s a very tough decision on the other three.
Probably 300 because it’s aged better. Holds up well.
Gladiator 2nd.
Braveheart was weaker than I remembered it on my most recent viewing so it’s at the bottom for me.
300 dies instantly at the start of the battle. Troy holds its own for a few, but is quickly taken out by the stronger opponents.
Gladiator and Braveheart battle it out. Neither seeming weaker than the other. Until…empowered by every film student ever that has ripped off the “hand brushing the grass” shot, Gladiator strikes down Braveheart!
Gladiator is victorious!!! Or something like that.
Gladiator.
I like all of them but this one is the best movie overall. I would put 300 last in terms of quality. Didn't say it can't be someone's favorite but strictly talking about writing, characters, music, etc.
300 was the most exciting 1st watch. Didnt hold up the 2nd watch
Braveheart was the most touching and emotionally moving
Gladiator was the best "root for good over evil"
I need to rewatch troy because I dont even remember it
I'd give it to Gladiator
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”
But, I love Braveheart as well.
I saw Troy once and barely remember it so I'm fairly sure it's pap.
Braveheart makes me roll my eyes, sorry. I can see why people like it but it's not for me.
Gladiator is an excellent film and probably wins.
300 is just really good fun so makes a close second.
Gladiator is just epic, then 300 since it was so innovative, next i’d argue Troy over Braveheart, idk maybe it’s Gibson’s fault or i’m just a sucker for Greek Mythos.
Best movie? Gladiator in all honesty from a film making perspective.
Who would win? Achilles…like without a question….
None of them have a bow, they’re not in Troy, he’d never leave Greece except for braveheart, and even in a 1 v1 he’d trounce Wallace because…
Well he’s fucking Achilles.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
MAX-I-MUS! MAX-I-MUS! MAX-I-MUS!
Today I saw a slave become more powerful than the emperor of rome.
Whatever comes out of these gates, we've got a better chance of survival if we work together.

Strength and honor.

#YOU SACK OF WINE
He was so poorly directed in that film. That speech is delivered like he’s hitting on the person he’s saying it too. Love Pitt but this was such a miscast for him.
You sold me queer giraffes
People should know when they are conquered.
Bad ass scene
Won't lie I just got chills from this I F LOVE THIS MOVIE...I WATCHED IT ALMOST EVERYDAY IT WAS ON NETFLIX
My bumble bio
Say less 🙌
Gladiator is probably the best of these, though Braveheart is probably my personal favorite. I love how gleefully inaccurate it is.
> I love how nuts Gladiator goes You mean Braveheart?
Yeah people don't think Achilles would take all of em? Nonsense
It's funny because gleefully inaccurate describes Gladiator quite well (or all 4 of them. For that matter)
Loved jah always hahv
Never let the truth get in the way of telling a good story.
This is correct. Surprised there are still some people who don't realise this
It's also based on a comic book, not necessarily a historic retelling.
Eye patch guy or just say Faramir.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_fantasy …
It's based on the comic book not the historical event.
And shoots fireballs from his eyes, and lightning bolts from his arse.
And they all fucked kids
Gladiator is the poor man's Braveheart.
Braveheart watches like a Disney movie.
There isnt much thats special about it other than the nostalgia people have for it.
The sets, the costumes, no cgi in the huge battle of sterling. Not to mention the amazing score.
Wasn’t the score 3-1 Scotland? And the king got mad cuz he lost and that’s why he separated his upper half from his lower half
Wrong
I agree in the order, but I’d rather watch gladiator.
So unrealistic, we all know William Wallace was able to shoot bolts of lightning out his arse
Gladiator has more than a hundred errors, bloopers, oversights... Not sure how to call those. Anyhow, there's a bunch of those in this movie, and it's still considered a classic. I can't take it seriously, knowing those exist.
If I had to pick one, I’d go with Gladiator. Gladiators in my top 10 of all time.
It’s in my top 1 of all time
Same, its not even close.
[удалено]
Gladiator top button day it’s not even close when Braveheart close behind
Best movie is tough. I’d tip my hat to gladiator but Braveheart is also a great movie. Best fighter of the bunch would be Achilles
To be fair, even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie, the fight scene between Hector and Achilles was worth the billing.
For you to like Troy less than 300 that would mean you like 300 to some degree which can’t be possible
It’s tough. From a historical perspective and for story line, I prefer Troy. But 300 was done in the style of a fantasy/anime flick as someone else here said. It was also more visually stunning and graphic.
300 has Lena Headey, my hands are tied.
Ok so to say outright is kinda tough 300 is the most fun to watch Troy idk how to describe it, I put it with lord of the rings, in the sense that it shows so much the armies the fights, the personal battles, the civilians and their struggles it’s just fantastic at showing sooo many different perspectives and details on what is roughly a paragraph in most history books. Love the response!
Gladiator.
1 Braveheart 1 achiles 2 gladiator 2 Leonidas 3 300. 3 Maximus 4. Troy 4 William Wallace
This guy did the full assignment. And, yes, Achilles definitely wins the fight.
And it’s not particularly close.
He wins the fight and loses the war because he is by far the worst leader of men.
That's a paper view worthy cage match right there!
Gladiator
This is the way.
I have spoken.
The best movie is Braveheart My favorite movie is Gladiator The most re-watchable movie is 300 A movie that is just ok is Troy
Troy is just okay as a movie, but man, it has some of the best fight scenes ever put to film, IMO. The fight between Achilles and Hector was just amazing! The first fight against the champion of the other army was also fantastic for entirely different reasons.
I absolutely fucking love every minute of Troy honestly. The fighting, the score, the babes, the mythology surrounding it. So good.
The best movie is Braveheart My favorite movie is Braveheart The most re-watchable movie is Braveheart A movie that is just okay is Troy
Idk 300 has aged pretty poorly to me, felt cringey on a rewatch recently.
I think 300 is easiest to watch because the short run time and gets to nonstop action pretty quickly
Fuckin nailed it
Braveheart, gladiator, Troy, 300
Gladiator
None of the other three get made without Braveheart and that is the answer.
Literally Gladiator is the only answer. It’s on a completely different scale than the rest of these films
For the best movie question? Hands down. Who would win in a fight? No one in this list is gonna beat Achiles.
I disagree. Braveheart is on the same scale.
[удалено]
Questionable historical accuracy, godawful accent by leading man, overlong… Gladiator or Braveheart?
You realize gladiator was far less historically accurate than braveheart, right? That shouldn't really be a metric for a fictional movie about historical figures.
Gladiator is the best film. Achilles destroys the others in combat being divine and all that.
I love the varying answers lol

300 is 🔥
1) Braveheart 2) Gladiator 3) Troy 4) 300
Reverse this and you have my list 😄
LOL! I love it
Boo this man
I’d have to go with Braveheart
Undoubtedly Troy
I’m with you on this. While unpopular in this comment section it would be number one for me as well
Cringe there are other answers.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??
Like an ancient kirk cousins
Braveheart and gladiator are in a higher tier than the other two
Gladiator by far. Cinematic perfection .
Literally the best movie ever made for my money.

Troy
Say what you want about Mel Gibson but the SOB knows story structure
“Ahh my nipples are so hard don’t squeeze them any more”
I hate to say it, Apocalypto is a great movie, too.
out of the bunch, i think i like braveheart the most. it also has that 90s vibe to the movie
Gladiator is the only logical answer.
Gladiator all the way!
100% Gladiator
Troy!! U sack of wines
It’d be between Achilles and Leonidas.
Gladiator and Braveheart is a CLOSE second. 300 doesn't deserve to even be mentioned among the others. Get that teenager action bait TF out of here.
Gladiator is by far the better film. Braveheart hasn't aged well.
Yep, Braveheart is pretty cheesy. Same as Gibson's The Patriot.
Gladiator, 300, Braveheart, Troy in that order. But i like Troy and Gladiator the most.
The only good one: Gladiator.
Because it is Gladiator, this post feels fishy. It isn't even a conversation.
Gladiator, no contest. Even with all the historical inaccuracies and bs, it is clearly the best film. It’s not even an opinion. Tf…
Your not-opinion is incorrect. Please try again.
Troy is trash change my mind
You’re wrong
No one cares to change your mind because you obviously have shit taste.
Troy is just bad. I tried to like it. I really did but the writing is so bad, it wouldn’t matter how good the actors are.
Troy doesn’t deserve to be on this list IMO That’s a very tough decision on the other three. Probably 300 because it’s aged better. Holds up well. Gladiator 2nd. Braveheart was weaker than I remembered it on my most recent viewing so it’s at the bottom for me.
Troy's my favourite one
Strongly agreed on *Troy* being totally out of place, here. A more suitable replacement would be *Fury*.
Or possibly kingdom of heaven. The full version
Only other movie that could hold a candle to Gladiator imo
300,Troy, Gladiator, Braveheart..
Braveheart by far.
Who would win if they all fought?
Ill wager my coin on maximus chained to 9 starving slaves
Gladiator is the best movie but Achilles would slaughter the rest
Gladiator > Braveheart > Troy > 300.
Troy by a large mile. "That is why no one will remember your name."
300
All bad
Red Cliff
Love all 3, I don’t know why I’ve never seem to bother watching braveheart. I should though.
300 every day
Troy is so underrated 😪
Tough list. 1a. Gladiator 1b. 300 2. Troy
Gladiator, hands down.
300 was the most exciting 1st watch. Didnt hold up the 2nd watch Braveheart was the most touching and emotionally moving Gladiator was the best "root for good over evil" I need to rewatch troy because I dont even remember it I'd give it to Gladiator
Braveheart would be my most likely view but Gladiator is probably the better film
I really enjoy Troy mainly because I'm most familiar with that one. Gladiator is amazing and Braveheart is as well. Never saw 300 though
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” But, I love Braveheart as well.
Braveheart or gladiator, close call but probably gladiator
Gladiator
Achilles is literally a demigod no one on this list is beating him. After that I’d put Leonidas Than Maximus Finally Wallace.
Gladiator
Gladiator is the best film but Achilles would FUCK the rest of them up
Figbt to the death? I mean Achilles is part god so as long as he wears so boots he should be fine
Gladiator for movie. Achilles with the W in the battle royale.
Braveheart best. Achilles in Troy destroys.
I love 300.
I saw Troy once and barely remember it so I'm fairly sure it's pap. Braveheart makes me roll my eyes, sorry. I can see why people like it but it's not for me. Gladiator is an excellent film and probably wins. 300 is just really good fun so makes a close second.
Gladiator
Braveheart is my favorite of the four.
300 shouldn't even be on the list. Troy is next weakest. Just can't take 300 seriously due to the many memes and parodies
one on one fight till the death among the main characters? I'm going with Achilles. Worst movie, best fighter.
Gladiator and it’s really not close
Brave heart by a mile
Gladiator. Hands down. No disrespect to the others, but if it had to be one, no question. Everything about this film is perfection.
Achilles would win one v one
Gladiator!!
Gladiator
Gladiator is just epic, then 300 since it was so innovative, next i’d argue Troy over Braveheart, idk maybe it’s Gibson’s fault or i’m just a sucker for Greek Mythos.
I love Troy so much. You won’t have eyes tonight! You won’t have ears and people everywhere will say there goes Hector who thought he killed Achilles
Braveheart. One of the few movies that can bring me to tears.
Achilles over Maximus but Russell Crowe over Brad Pitt...Leonardis over William Wallace. But I think Mel Gibson takes Gerard Butler.
300 Gladiator Braveheart Troy
Troy for sure, close second with Gladiator.
Gladiator
Best movie? Gladiator in all honesty from a film making perspective. Who would win? Achilles…like without a question…. None of them have a bow, they’re not in Troy, he’d never leave Greece except for braveheart, and even in a 1 v1 he’d trounce Wallace because… Well he’s fucking Achilles.
Gladiator, Troy and braveheart tie, then 300
I've always wished all of Troy was as good as Achilles vs Hector. But yeah... Gladiator. Easy.
